it is a little bit messy (mostly toward the end), but its strengths overcome that imo. what is the sample? it sounds familiar but i can't place it.

the sample really puts me in a good mood.

i think it's really sonically unpleasant w/ barely a hook

it also bothers me that on "omg" usher just sounds like a will body double & on this joint nicki is just playing the role of fergie -- there's no collaboration... it's just grafting other pop stars onto black eyed peas songs -- with usher it felt a bit more okay because he had already showed that he was just gonna jump on whatever trend could keep his career alive, but with nicki i feel like there should be more of a meeting of a minds than what this is

also her rap verse shouldn't be buried after 3 mins of will.i.am

that factor is way more depressing on "omg" probably because usher can do way more than he does and it feels like he's really limiting himself. i don't feel like nikki ends up as subsumed, but i don't think "check it out" sounds that much like a bep song. really, it's more in line with will's last solo album, which i liked most of.

i don't really care how this fits into nikki's career arc tho.

in fact i like it more for will than for nikki.

the will.i.am bits on this are even worse than...the rest of it, which is pretty bad, apart from nicki's rap, which arrives way too late in the day to rescue it

fuck all the talk about having threesomes w/ cassie & amber rose, i think the most subversive thing nicki's ever said on record is "i'm with a bad bitch/ he's with his friends" because she says it so casually that it's almost hard to notice

also i'm still trying to figure out the ratio of gross crassness: hilarious brilliance of "and we be doin donuts while we wave in the 380/ we give a lot of money to the babies out in haiti"

Nicki raps like everything I hate about 2011 and Eminem raps like everything I love about 1999. Pretty much best verse of 2010 next to Earl's rap over "Drop" and Roc Marci's "Raw Deal"

ehh early em was a lot more playful, w/ good punchlines that had lots of creative metaphors (like form like voltron and blast you w my shoulder missiles to pick one I was just listening too)

this nu-em still has the obsession w rhymes and the sound of words but largely drops that kind of lyrical playfulness
