As much as I love Human League and Pet Shop Boys, that stuff doesn't belong in a techno/electronic/ambient poll. Unlike 99% of the other stuff here, it's pop music with synths -- not techno/electronic/ambient.

I was really looking forward to this poll, but if the Human League, one of the key groups in popularising electronic music and the single act who changed my outlook on music more than any other are vetoed then fuck it I'm out of here.

idk i feel like i appreciate song-based electronic pop like the human league with a completely different part of my brain than tracky house/techno stuff - same with uk garage - to the extent that it makes it impossible to actually assess them alongside each other, so yeah i'd veto all of that

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:00 (thirteen years ago) link

The Human League are first and foremost a pop band.

But it isn't a house/techno poll. It's a techno/electronic/ambient/etc poll.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Blanket negging Pet Shop Boys kind of ignores a gigantic swath of their career...? (of course it's likely no one is nominating the Nightlife singles or any of their remixes but it seems kind of revisionist be all "they were a pop group" in the face of stuff like "We All Feel Better In The Dark" and "It's Alright" and "Paninaro" and etc etc

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Dunno, this is billed as a techno/electronic/ambient poll, not a synth-pop/house/disco/remixes poll.

ilxor has truly been got at and become an ILXor (ilxor), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:14 (thirteen years ago) link

Not to be pedantic it's a techno/electronic/ambient/etc poll. As far as I'm concerned electronic music's a broad church which includes horrible pop stuff as well as idm, techno etc.

State Attorney Foxhart Cubycheck (Billy Dods), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Not sure it was intended to open the door to every pop song that uses a synthesizer...

Not sure it was intended to open the door to every pop song that uses a synthesizer...

I wouldn't say that, but I would say that the Human League and Pet Shop Boys are important enough in the history of electronic pop music to be included. If we're excising all electronic pop simply because it is pop, then this should have been made clear at the outset, and the parameters more strictly defined.

emil.y, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i assume "electronic" isn't actually meant to be taken in its broadest sense, otherwise let's just throw open the doors to every digitally-produced song ever?

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

no-one ever suggested that. but the pet shop boys make music with electronic instruments ergo it's electronic music. we are, basically, speaking of a methodology here, not an aesthetic.

xp great trolling, A+

Neil S, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

All I'm really saying is that PSB have done enough house-y and techno-y songs that blanket dismissing them seems wrong.

Having said that, I'd never nominate "Love Comes Quickly" not because I don't love it, but because it doesn't seem to fit what the poll is talking about.

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I still go by my drum machine/acoustic drums dichotomy.

If it's got a drum machine on it, it's allowed.
Acoustic drums, it's not.

(A human playing electronic drum pads is admitted only if no acoustic drums are used.)

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

wait, does that mean I get no nominate songs off of Invisible Touch

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:37 (thirteen years ago) link

No, because there's guitars on that.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

There are guitars on The Campfire Headphase, so does that mean I don't get to nominate "Chromakey Dreamcoat"?

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Or TC 1992's "Funky Guitar"?

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm still afraid of the Campfire Headphase.

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Guitar samples are ok maybe?

I'm guilty of nomming some Italo/synthpop stuff above (on the basis that similar had already been posted), I don't mind retracting them if they're outside whatever boundaries get decided on...But purging everything that's a "pop song" will end up dumping Kraftwerk and the Vengaboys (among others)!

An alternative would be to accept whatever people suggest but ask voters to take into account whether a track falls into their personal "techno/electronic/ambient/etc" canon - the purist vote will make sure that Human League or whoever don't dominate but there will be a sprinkling of pop classics in there with the bobbins and bangers.

seandalai, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:46 (thirteen years ago) link

A sample of a guitar is alright if you are using a drum machine. But live guitars *and* acoustic drums = rock and I'm not having it. ;-)

autechre - arch carrier
autechre - v-proc
underworld - moaner
vitalic - la rock 01

peter in montreal, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

no guitars so no dirty epic by underworld then?

plus nine inch nails and other industrial acts have tons of tracks with no guitars but has drum machine

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

lionrock are fucked too then, plus a whole host of mid 90s dance for using a guitar.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:53 (thirteen years ago) link

btw I am formally nominating

TC 1992 - Funky Guitar
Boards of Canada - Chromakey Dreamcoat

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

Half serious: we could vote first on whether each nominee fits under the intended techno/electronic/ambient/etc umbrella (yes/no/idk per nominee). Tracks with more yes than no votes would go through to the final ballot. This would surely lead to lots of pissed off ILXors and entertaining internet arguments!

Gorecki or Go Home (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:55 (thirteen years ago) link

autechre - vletrmx

peter in montreal, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Well either we have an artificial boundary that everyone hates or we have a free-for-all that everyone hates.

xp to PiSC - that's kind of like what I was suggesting, except I proposed folding elegibility into the overall voting. Borderline tracks would fall down the ranking because fewer people would consider voting for them.

seandalai, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:56 (thirteen years ago) link

i say let gear decide, it's his poll. He decides we all abide by it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:57 (thirteen years ago) link

let geir decide.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 20:59 (thirteen years ago) link

xp But I don't think votes should have two orthogonal meanings. If track X gets more votes than track Y, it's not going to be very satisfying to be left wondering if more voters like track X or if more voters think track Y was a bad fit for the poll...

LOL yes, let Geir decide!

Gorecki or Go Home (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Can I add things like
C&C Music Factory - Gonna Make You Sweat
Snap!- I Got The Power
Black Box - Everybody Everybody

...or am I gonna get laughed off the thread for that?

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:13 (thirteen years ago) link

Those are good, I'm googling now to make sure the guitars on "I Got the Power" are sampled.

Gorecki or Go Home (Paul in Santa Cruz), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:17 (thirteen years ago) link

btw can someone who isn't about to leave work make sure all of the tracks from The Joint are nominated because they all really should be

and by "Heavens!" i mean WATERFALLS OF BIDDY (HI DERE), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:20 (thirteen years ago) link

The "I Got The Power" guitars are pretty much the definition of sampled guitars. Ha ha. In fact, didn't they just sample a singer and stick a model in the video? Or was that Black Box?

cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Tuesday, 14 September 2010 21:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Let's be fair and admit 'Being boiled' is closer to modern electronic genres than to pop or rock. If we're going to veto this one we might as well veto kraftwerk.
