the opening video was a really unnecessary limitation of context, but I'm all for Taylor showing sympathy for older kids as well as younger kids

Kanye talking into a vacuum cleaner about how its his privilege to be an asshole was more engaging though

thought it was overkill for them to BOTH play new songs about it, would've been okay if it was just one. i wonder if they heard each other's songs at all in advance.

i don't know if Kanye's was ABOUT IT, but certainly OF it

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:31 (thirteen years ago) link

can you even be "you eated my cookie" while being that patronising? i haven't seen the kanye song but that's not the vibe i'm getting at all

I want Taylor to write a song about how a high school principal has feelings too

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I know you think he's after you
But do you really believe he wants to be here toooooo

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

there was not enough katy perry.

yeah i think since she was one of the big performers at the movie awards in June they didn't want to have her perform on this one, but a "Teenage Dream" perf woulda been good

some dude, Monday, 13 September 2010 14:50 (thirteen years ago) link

it was so weird having basically the biggest pop star of the moment relegated to presenting an award for 30 seconds. i don't even remember what nicki minaj said at all, which says A LOT about katy

Earlier in the night, the Best Rock Video award went to the diffuse, dull “Kings and Queens,” by 30 Seconds to Mars. If Mr. West had been planning to jump out of his seat at the announcement of one of this night’s winners, that would have been the one, and yet not a peep was heard from him from Caramanica's NY Times piece

Yes

But maybe picking on dull rock at the VMAs is too easy

curmudgeon, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:10 (thirteen years ago) link

"Kings And Queens" is a beautiful video, tbh. Its Donnie Darko/Warriors/BatForLashed concept is def hella played out, but the art direction and cinematography are gorgeous.

Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:12 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't know what the video has to do w/ any of those things except i guess Warriors, but yeah, it is a good video (and a good song imo). is Caramanica a butthurt Muse fan?

I was surprised how humble and polite Jared Leto was after seeing his on-stage shtick in their Closer To Edge video

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 15:16 (thirteen years ago) link

Closer To The Edge, I mean.

It's the poll that had to be made:

Best/Favorite Performance on the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards POLL

Yes

oh god, NO, if that would mean we'd have to hear jared leto sing a touching song about it next year.

i wasn't gonna be all pedantic about that line because it's just a lame & obvious joke at the end of the article, but since it's been re-posted & otm'd twice now i'll just point out that a. kanye & jared leto are bros and b. if you think that kanye would ever strike down a self-involved super-pretentious musician who made a hilariously overwrought and pretentious music video, then i'm not sure you really know who kanye west is

I'm not sure any of us know who Kanye West really is

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 20:24 (thirteen years ago) link

he's a misogynist riddle tweeted by a megalomaniac enigma and smothered in charming autotune

da croupier, Monday, 13 September 2010 20:28 (thirteen years ago) link

It’s okay, life is a tightrope
32 and still growing up now
Who you are is not what you did
You’re still an innocent
Time turns flames to embers
You’ll have new Septembers
Every one of us has messed up too...

funny, i heard that as "ambers," not embers, and assumed she was dropping in one more kanye reference just to be cute and clever.

on paper, that song reads awful, like some bad collegiate singer-songwriter crap, but i thought the actual performance was moving.

i also liked how kanye's response, in addition to being, "you think i'm a douchebag? well, yeah, i AM a douchebag, so what?," was also, "you think you know how to sing off-key? well, get a load of this."
