"Break Stuff" was released as a single in spring 2000 but was from a '99 album fwiw

I will most likely be the sole Incubus vote. There are plenty of songs by bands represented here that I like better (Weezer, Foo Fighters, White Stripes), but dude mostly picked songs that I didnt' care much about.

can't stand MCR but some dude OTM about #'s 2 & 3. Will prolley vote Clocks but let the record show that although now it suffers from permanent exposure, when it first came out, the presence of Chop Suey on the radio was absolutely exhilirating...

my list

clocks
chop suey
maps
hard to explain
mr. brightside
swing swing
send the pain below
word up
the fixer
icky thump*

*the one instance where I really thought that the artist in question put out loads of better singles in the decade, though god bless you for snubbing "Seven Nation Army", which I find insufferable. I still would've chose either "Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground" or "Hardest Button to Button" instead (and either one would've been my no-contest pick easy...)

i've been thinking the last few days that part of the reason maps is so incredible is that it creates this entire coherent world unto itself where everything falls exactly into place, the way the guitar octaves in the chorus echo the intro and the single note lines spin around the vocal melody it's like yo the indie rock lord of the rings has arrived

If you check the piece I specified only songs that have appeared on a Billboard rock chart (SY haven't had a charting single since 1994)

Ah that makes sense. Would be curious to see your list of rock songs that did not appear on a Billboard rock chart.

jaymc, Monday, 13 September 2010 23:43 (thirteen years ago) link

"Maps" is well-constructed, it's just a bit too ballady for me.

jaymc, Monday, 13 September 2010 23:44 (thirteen years ago) link

"maps" is great, but "hard to explain" is crazy overrated -- "mr brightside" is waaay better

eh, if i did that, it'd surely be just a scrambled assortment of deep cuts from my favorite rock albums of the decade (i.e. the thing that i rag on P&J voters for doing with their singles ballots every year, which is why i prefer putting together singles lists like this).
