all these tracks are knocking around on the internet in 320 btw - unfortunately my ineffable regard for the sacrosanct institution of copyright law prevents me from saying any further ;_;

Given that none of them are commercially available I probably wouldn't bitchslap you too hard for posting them.

Of course this is Naughty Raver! Love this tune so much, such a fabulous vocal. Reminds me of the 2-step remix of 702's "You Don't Know".

Missed this. Exciting news, and I'm largely pleased just that I can confirm this is a 2010 tune as it'd be top 5 of the year for me. Hoping for a digital release.

tim (or anyone) have you listened to that marcus set yet, i wanna finish off this tracklisting! a couple of the missing ones are really obvi, it's doing my nut.

2:42 is the dumplin mix of 'sunglasses' and
5:36 was indeed 'jungle drums' by babyface jay. btw:

Hey also what's that Greyman tune with the really emotive Booka Shade-ish synth chords in it? It was in the recent Petchy/Topsee set posted on Dissensus.

What will make it different from the others?

Nymphypnotik will take place in a West African-owned night club called Jubilee on 1 Peckham High Street, SE15 5EB. It is the first time Jubilee have opened their doors to this sort of event, and we feel very lucky to be involved in such an establishment, one that provides a kind of hub for the mostly immigrant locals in the area. Part of the ‘trax without borders’ philosophy feeds in to clientele too. No frills, no pretense, an element of risk sure but the rewards will be ten-fold.

it's a great thing about funky that it can find and make great use of the odd track from bok bok or altered natives or whoever but that doesnt mean everything is suddenly the same thing. what we discuss on these radio sets is a distinction worth fighting for

any definition of funky that excludes Altered Natives is a bit off.

Altered Natives are funky in the same sense that Armand Van Helden was speed garage (give a little geographical proximity, take a little of Armand's status as originator), I think, in the sense of tuff NY garage:speed garage::broken beat:funky.

An average dj set from Danny Native contains almost zero funky - in fact basically zero if you don't count his own funky crossover tunes.

Nothing wrong with the above of course, and I think Altered Natives are a pretty interesting outfit, though inconsistent (so prolific it's inevitable I guess).

Unfortunately I can´t identify any of your missing ones. Is 99:15 Supa D´s "Congo Natty" by any chance? It actually sounds either like Dumplin or Scotty D.

no 'congo natty' is a pretty inessential roska-esque tribal set builder tune wot i always forget how it goes exactly. on the plus side though i didn't realise that's all the same tune between 'creeper' and 'xzero' so haha, that's one down at least.

Loving it so much. The Funkystepz/Louise Williams team-up is kinda unbeatable, they should put out this and "Lovers" as a double A-side.

Tim F, Tuesday, 21 September 2010 08:18 (thirteen years ago) link

according to maxsin recently they've now added 'whispers' to that sounds of malibu ep they were talking about in june. (so: sweet love / trinity hill / whispers / leave with you / malibu). shouldve chucked 'fuller' on there as well really.

that double a-side would be awesome though yeah. 'lovers' remaining relatively unknown even in funky's small sphere is 4ever baffling.

Martinclark, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 09:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Really?? I don't hear that at all, and I have nothing against Natasha Bedingfield as a vocalist. Vanya is pretty tinny really, Natasha has a much deeper range that balances out her high notes. Are you thinking of "I Bruise Easily" or something?

Tim, i gotta just say this because it's been festering on me for weeks. in your mid-year round up.... Sheryl Cole remix.

Really? Cheryl Cole? I mean i dont care how amazing a writer or remixer you are, Cheryl Cole???? Are you sure???

Martinclark, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 11:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i kinda see what he's saying - it's less vanya herself and more just the song but both have a bigmouth sunny smile thing going basically

don't care for ms kerl at all either but i can't say it bothered my enjoyment of that remix to any particular extent

in fact her vocal skillz of a plank measured quality rather supports the powerful ill blu swirl quite well compared to some of their other remixes i think

Really? Cheryl Cole? I mean i dont care how amazing a writer or remixer you are, Cheryl Cole???? Are you sure???

See the problem is thinking of it as a Cheryl Cole tune. It's not anymore. It's an Ill Blu tune, with some anonymous diva singing, and Ill Blu's entire raison d'être is totally transforming fairly poor originals.

The Roll Deep remixes being a case in point - the originals sound like bad euro dj remixes once you've heard the Ill Blu versions.

I think when people talk about funky vocal tunes they're too quick to start talking in terms of songs and singers - is this tune an anthem, is that diva a good singer, etc - as if, once you add vocals, we're no longer in the realm of dance music per se, and we're now talking about R&B qua R&B or even pop qua pop (connected to this is the (IMO) fruitless search for a potential "name" singer who can rep for funky). But in the context of funky, the song and the singer are most of the time as much a "production trick" as anything else - like some sampled irie chatter in a dubstep tune. In funky, often very "straight" unexpressive vocals work really well at anchoring more outgoing, flashy productions, because a conventional "big vocal" would be a jarring overkill in that context (conversely, "It's What You Do" and "Kiss Me", both anthems and "proper songs", are very simple from a production standpoint). Other examples of this are stuff like Dumplin's "Flatline", or the Lil Silva remix of "Why Can't We Be Friends" - these vocals would be ignorable and irritating, respectively, in any other context, but for the purpose of these funky tracks they're more like synth riffs you can sing along to.

2-step had a history of this sort of thing too, of course. If you want to really waste 4 minutes of your life, hunt down the original of "Flowers".

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:01 (thirteen years ago) link

It helps that Cheryl has zero profile in Australia, like Girls Aloud before her (though "Three Words" gets some play on the radio, more through the presence of W.I.A. than anything else) - AFAIC "Parachute" could be some failed single from some failed R&B hopeful that luckily got a funky remix before the record company decided to shelve the release of the single.

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

The Roll Deep remixes being a case in point - the originals sound like bad euro dj remixes once you've heard the Ill Blu versions.

they sound like bad euro dance even if you've never heard the ill blu remixes! really, really bad, and even ill blu can't fully rid them of their cheesy stench. i can live with the "green light" remix but not the "good times" one.

i came round to both the cheryl cole remix and the drake one (that's not ill blu but same point really) eventually. had to wait for the general drake conversation to die down though, the week his album dropped i hated him too much for anything with his voice on it to be acceptable. i prefer to think of ill blu as showing up cheryl cole and drake, really; comparing them to the anonodivas who usually populate funky is an insult to your kyras, vanya taylors et al.

actually what's more impressive about the "parachute" remix isn't so much that ill blu made cole's vocal into something semi-compelling but that they found an actual SONG in that mush of nothingness.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

probably worth noting that the crazy cousinz remix of the first c.cole single failed (probably cuz there really was no song there) and the geeneus remix of the second c.cole single was only ok (the original probably being about as good as she'll get)

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I know, I mean that they sound like knock-offs too, an afterthought rather than the original. Like all the weird Spanish radio version arrangements of pop tunes I'm hearing here in Madrid (including "According To You" and "Need You Now"?!?!).

What's remarkable about quite a few Ill Blu remixes is that they end up rearranging the tunes into more workable songs than before. It's like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy or Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares where the experts ostensibly arrive to do-over one thing but end up saving your marriage in the process.

Tim F, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

so to like this tune you have to pretend she's not Cheryl Cole and not know she's in Girls Aloud? Sorry i dont buy it because even given those two points her vocals are still in for 90% of the track. I'm not doubting Ill Blu's talent but all they added to this remix was that synth and their drums, basically. The single largest musical element is her voice - if fact it carries the mix. if you had less of it they would have had to added more elements to the arrangement carry the rest of the mix.

i loved garage's relationship with r&b refixes, but they just did a lot more with the vocals - Sunship's chopped vox dub of Craig David is a persy, Todd's trademarks too - but here it's just a straight vocal and no amount of driving drums or pretending it's no longer a Cheryl Cole tune will take away from the fact that the one dominant element of this track doesnt cut it...

... Hottest By Far by contrast, ohmydayz...

That Cheryl Cole remix is terrific and it's all about the rising synth chords in the chorus. I really like the Green Light one as well, Ill Blu could make a whole career out of boshing up watery pop-grime and I would be happy.

It's What You Do is a straight-up single of the year contender for me, funky or otherwise.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

you have to pretend she's not Cheryl Cole and not know she's in Girls Aloud

It's easy enough not to notice she's Cheryl Cole even when listening to her own records. Girls Aloud even more so. Her vocals are so anonymous.

Matt DC, Thursday, 23 September 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not about pretending it's not Cheryl, it's about not caring either way. Martin you've given no reason not to like the tune apart from a standing objection to the name "Cheryl Cole".
