where's the kanye single on the charts again? < / annoying rumor that won't go away >

Didn't one of the Pet Shop Boys rap on "Yesterday When I Was Mad"?

"West End Girls" IS a rap song. Neil T. confirmed what was obvious when he said much of the song's inspiration was "The Message."

is that Extra Fancy a rap group or nu-metal, like? I can't remember what they sounded like...

Sleaze-rock. Sorta. I guess.

jeanne, are you talking about the nytimes magazine piece that ran maybe 3-6 months ago? it was about the d/l lifestyle within the hip-hop identified community, not necessarily about gay artists.

Yes, I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same thing. The "d/l" thing. It mentioned D/L dance clubs in the Bronx and whatnot, right? It was definitely a Times piece, not a Guardian piece.

Dave - I think they were thinking of the piece I linked to above yours, not the Zoe Williams thing, which is less specific all round.

Another interesting thing would be, how many big mainstream hip-hop acts have come out in defence of gay rights. I think The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy did (their debut album is very much like a collection of all kinds of intellectual liberal views, but I am not sure of any others. Did Public Enemy ever do? (They have done anti-sexism lyrics, which is kind of unusual among male hip-hop acts as well)

AllHipHop.com: You know, Brokeback Mountain is huge

T.I.: [Laughs] Now, why the f**k are you gonna ask me a question about Brokeback Mountain?

AllHipHop.com: Would you ever make a song with a gay rapper?

T.I.: Hell no! We don't mix.

AllHipHop.com: Really?

T.I.: Who is the gay rapper?

AllHipHop.com: I don't know.

T.I.: There is no gay rapper to make a song with, so that question is non-applicable!

Back in '88 when I was listening to NWA and The Frogs a lot I thought combining the two was a great idea. All this time and still no one's capitalized on it yet.

FYI Kanye is pro-gay (has a gay cousin) which is unheard of in hip-hop - maybe where the rumors come from?

LSD- Not to change the subject entirely, but can you explain “Light a candle, run laps around the English Channel, Neptunes’ got a cocker spaniel”?

Noreaga- Well, when you light a candle, that’s saluting your dead peoples. Light a Candle. And then, what’s the English Channel? It’s a big pool of water and it’s overseas. So I’m trying to say that when I light a candle I’m that strong that I can run laps around the English Channel. And Neptunes [producers featured prominently on Noreaga’s two solo albums] have a cocker spaniel. ‘Cause they homo.
[Pause]

LSD- Oh. All right.

Noreaga- Neptunes is homo. You won’t hear another Neptunes track again on Noreaga again in your life. I didn’t know that they hand was broken. [makes limp-wristed gesture]

LSD- Is this a recent discovery?

Noreaga- It’s a recent discovery after the “Oh No” video. After money had the tight choker on in that video. And we started asking questions, and people from Virginia started telling us that he’s a straight Flagrino. And he takes it up the ass. I cut him off.

LSD- Even though the beats--

Noreaga- Fuck the beats! [laughter] I can’t fuck with nobody that Mohammed used to throw off the hill. You know, Mohammed used to take all the homo niggas in the village, and he’d take ‘em to the top of the hill and he tricked them. He’d tell ‘em ‘Yo, jump down there’, and when they’d jump down there, they killed they self. We don’t fuck with homo. I like lesbians though. I’ma stand up--I like lesbians and dykes. If you’re lesbian and dyke you’re okay to me, but if you’re a homo, I don’t even like you.

LSD- So you’re pretty clear about that.

Noreaga- I’m clear about that. Y’all ain’t homo are you? [laughter]

that's a great line!

noreaga sounds like a class act.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 13 March 2006 13:59 (eighteen years ago) link

You just know that there's a hip-hop equivalent of Rob Halford out there somewhere, waiting for the right climate to come out. If Noreaga's comments are typical, then clearly the time isn't right. (Gotta admit that his bizarre Mohammed anecdote was dismaying enough to be funny, tho.)

Thomas Tallis (Tommy), Monday, 13 March 2006 20:47 (eighteen years ago) link

What's with the selective indignation regarding hip-hop and "homophobia"? Hip-hop seems light years away from joining the rest of civilization in promoting decent heterosexual relationships, nevermind tolerating ones that most of them don't engage in.

It's this penny-wise, pound-foolish mentality where a rapper can treat women like shit and promote crass materialism and violence but as long as he's down with gays he won't be regarded as a social retard by the media.

For an example, let's say there are two rappers: Rapper A promotes black literacy and history and downplays material wealth and sex in his music. The thing is he's of the Southern Baptist-mold of black religion and has been known to refer to homosexuals as "fags". Rapper B is your standard chauvinist rapper who instructs women to shake their T&A for him and brags about his wealth, his race, his origin, etc. but he is also for championing homosexual acceptance and condemns homophobia in hip-hop. Assuming they are both equally popular and their stances are equally known (relatively) by people in the media, who do you think is more likely to get magazine covers for bringing "intelligence" back into the mainstream of hip-hop? Who do you think is more "enlightened" and by how much?

Cunga (Cunga), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:25 (eighteen years ago) link

B, by approximately two T's and one A.

Paul in Santa Cruz (Paul in Santa Cruz), Monday, 13 March 2006 21:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Cunga, you can be a Southern Baptist with negative feelings about homosexuality without referring to gays as "fags." I don't get the validity of either of your constructs.

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Monday, 13 March 2006 23:43 (eighteen years ago) link

That's because there is no validity to any of his constructs.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 13 March 2006 23:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Shakey Mo Collier (Shakey Mo Collier), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 00:08 (eighteen years ago) link

fwiw, that N.O.R.E. interview is at least 5 years old, because it says it was after "Oh No" and his first two solo albums, and since then the Neptunes have done tracks on God's Favorite plus his current single "I'm A G". So either he decided Pharrell is not a straight Flagrino or he realized he doesn't have much of a career w/out their beats.

Alex in Baltimore (Alex in Baltimore), Tuesday, 14 March 2006 00:14 (eighteen years ago) link

It probably makes you a horrible person for supposing that only gay people can die of AIDS.

Hey, I didn't suppose that! Everyone else did, though, and I never knew if they were serious or if it was just gossip. Anyway, I will just assume he wasn't because Suge Knight is probably reading this right now.
