Oh yeah, Adam. Did he last longer than a single story? Was it just two? Part of me wishes I'd included one-off companions, then we could've voted for Kylie and Gareth Jenkins.

Re: Turlough, I only watched Planet of Fire (his last) this week, and it was the first of his stories I've seen. I wasn't that impressed.

JimD, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 13:29 (sixteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, true that.

This dude was in two? Three? Tried to nick stuff in the end.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 13:31 (sixteen years ago) link

oh and yeah, turlough, meh.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 13:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Actually, omg, if Gareth Jenkins turns up in next week's episode and really does foil the Sontaran Inavsion (only 7 years lte) that might just be the best thing ever.

No Sara Kingdom or Grace?

No book companions? (Benny, Wolsey, Roz, Chris, Sam, Fitz, Compassion, Anji, Grant, Trix)

HI DERE, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 14:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Grace counts as a one-off companion, so was omitted on the same grounds as kylie. Like I said though, I maybe regret that.

Um, have to admit I've never heard of sarah kingdom.

Books omitted due to disputed canonicity issues, Which I think is a fair call, no?

Anyway Dan, stop pretending you would've voted for anyone other than Leela.

JimD, Tuesday, 29 April 2008 14:36 (sixteen years ago) link

I suspect Dan may be with me on Zoe, a companion so cute he once described her as "part kitten".

I was not going to bring up Sara Kingdom.

I think a lot of people sleep on precisely how awesome a companion Zoe actually was. She was like a version of Adric who actually worked as a character (although in fairness, Adric made more sense with the 4th Doctor and Romana II than he did with Nyssa and Tegan).

HI DERE, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:47 (sixteen years ago) link

i think my favorite companion was the totally useless but well-meaning doctor who wore a blue blazer and was always bollixing things up, can't remember his name but he was in the ark of time

I watched The Face of Evil for the first time this week, and now I'm feeling a bit bad about the fact I didn't vote for Leela.

But also, have started watching The Krotons, and Zoe is very good too.

JimD, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:16 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently the guy who played Harry Sullivan wrote a Who movie that never got produced. "The finale of the film was to have taken place on a giant pinball table, the holes in the table being portals to other dimensions."

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 May 2008 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link

sounds like Douglas Adams' cricket-based Who movie.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:09 (sixteen years ago) link

Yes, except instead of cricket, pinball.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 8 May 2008 02:13 (sixteen years ago) link

well, yeah

but why cosmic sport the theme for *two* proposed terrible Dr Who movies? was hardly anything that was a feature of the series. it is a bafflement.

the 3rd Hitchhiker book started out as a Doctor Who story, right? Anybody know what the original script was, or how much he had to change?

kingfish, Thursday, 8 May 2008 05:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the Gaiman book had a fairly decent precis.

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 8 May 2008 07:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I think the 3rd one is kind of based on the whole Key to Time season.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Thursday, 8 May 2008 10:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Doctor Who Meets Scratchman (the Ian Marter script discussed above) was something him and Tom came up with in the pub and really got quite far up in the planning stage. There was a good article about it in DWM a year or so ago.

Doctor Who And The Krikkitmen got turned into Life, The Universe and Everything; but chunks of it get reused in various places in The Pirate Planet. Ironic, really, since he stole the core idea of the TARDIS turning up at Lords from The Dalek Master Plan.

Of course, Adams' real Who crib was turning City Of Death (to a lesser degree0 and Shada into Dirk Gently.

I read about this years ago in one of those 25th-anniversary books they put out. Apparently the idea got scrapped when they went to see Star Wars and realised that the whole level of audience-acceptable special effects on the big screen had just jumped well beyond the limits set by BBC-style budgets.

Romana I is massively impressive; probably the reason why I ended up disliking Romana II so much was because in comparison she was a total personality-free robot.

RIP :(

British actress Caroline John, known to many for playing Doctor Who assistant Liz Shaw, has died at the age of 72.

A funeral was held in south west London on Wednesday for the Yorkshire-born actress, who starred opposite Jon Pertwee's Doctor in the BBC series.

John played Liz Shaw in four Doctor Who adventures in 1970, later reprising her role in 1983's The Five Doctors.

Both she and husband Geoffrey Beevers went on to work on several Doctor Who audio and straight-to-video spin-offs.

Born in 1940, John trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama and later toured with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre.

As Elizabeth "Liz" Shaw, John made her first appearance alongside the newly-regenerated third Doctor in the story Spearhead from Space.

Her character witnessed the reawakening of an ancient race in The Silurians and stopped an insane scientist from cracking open the Earth's crust in Inferno.

She also got to drive Bessie, the Doctor's canary yellow roadster, despite the actress not having a driving licence at the time.

In recent years, John was seen in episodes of Doctors, Midsomer Murders and Silent Witness.
