I went record shopping today and found some goodies:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PAUKeAYByXw

I thought I found a long lost Bell/Varley record I had never heard of. It turns out that they had nothing to do with this and it was released on Paul Hardcastle's house music label.

Too much thinking, not enough bizarro warp factor rocking. (Display Name), Sunday, 5 September 2010 01:23 (thirteen years ago) link

anyone knows what techno/house tracks made it to pitchfork's top 250 tracks of the 90's? too lazy to browse it.

impressive haul! that conway brothers thing is cool. i had a pretty good haul myself this weekend, got an erik erickson single on fragile, a gerald mitchell thing on 420 west, a bunch of shut up and dance singles, a couple of things on compass, jams in the key of smack by polarius, red planet 02 and some other stuff i can't remember

the best thing i got was the x-ray record on transmat. can't believe i slept on this for so long, "untitled" is incredible

the mixes of "let's go" on that record sound very much of 1986, but it's crazy how years ahead "untitled" sounds

vessels in distress (r1o natsume), Monday, 6 September 2010 12:58 (thirteen years ago) link

That X-Ray record is tight, nice find!

I don't know what to think of those Compass records. They were really hyped back in the day and Hawtin in particular used to really champion them. I have come across a handful of them recently and I just can't get into them. I don't think they are horrible, it is just that there wasn't much going in them musically, the drums weren't that funky, and they just seem really tooly.

I am not attacking you, they just don't do much for me.

You ever get into any of those Unit 2 singles on 430 West?

Also, this is completely bananas. I really wish I had a copy.

I love it when Mike Banks does poppy straight forward house ala Your Time Is Up/Living For The Night.

a couple of things on compass,

I'm a bit confused, do you mean Cabinet Records? Some of those tracks are absolutely brilliant, but there seems to be a fine line between the great ones and the bog-standard ones.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 6 September 2010 16:26 (thirteen years ago) link

A couple I really like:

Cab Drivers: Elwico
Horseshoe: Honey

Both unfortunately not on Youtube.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 6 September 2010 16:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i've got the one they put out on happy records (somehow it's a bargain bin mainstay around here). i'll check that one out though, thanks

i like a lot of stuff on cabinet, especially when it sounds like it's beginning to feed into the early perlon sound (i read somewhere that zip is also a big fan). but it's a pretty recent discovery for me and i have to get to know the records more, nothing has really blown me away like stuff on say, trelik has for example

final cut was briefly mentioned recently on another thread, well today i picked this up for 2 pounds, it's the og one on paragon records not the network repress. so sick, i could listen to this 80s detroit club music all day:

yes i mean cabinet! one of the ones i picked up was by a group called compass...

favourite mike banks house track is this

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brTZ4a1reBY

first heard steffi play it outside panorama bar at like 2 pm a few years ago, literally like 10 of us sprinting over to the decks to trainspot it
also got a mint copy of city slab horror for £3, but that's for another thread i guess

wow that post is a mess but you get the gist

not on happy trax but this is another favourite in that early ur dance party style

As I told my brother in Kstarke, I could totally drop $1000 right here and now. It's frightening how easy it would be, too.

Given how bad quality some of these records are, I'm really glad I didn't :(

EDB, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 03:26 (thirteen years ago) link

That's a bummer, what was the deal with the records? Weren't you able to check them out before you bought them?

srsly dudes pastiche aesthetic + amiable nihilism (Display Name), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 05:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but the thing is their their listening station is such a thrown together setup that everything sounded like it had been dragged across the interstate. A few of these were admittedly marked down accordingly, but otherwise, I wasn't looking for a record of scratching and popping that happens to have a robert owens track underneath, etc.

Well, at least the copy of Promised Land I got for $5 was pretty much brand new.

EDB, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I am sorry to hear that. I never understood used record stores that skimp on their listening stations. What Robert Owens record is it?

srsly dudes pastiche aesthetic + amiable nihilism (Display Name), Wednesday, 8 September 2010 15:07 (thirteen years ago) link

That was Bring Down the Walls. Among other gritty sounding records I also got was a copy of The Pressure Cooker that sounded like it was put in an actual pressure cooker. Though it may have been the first, I don't think it will be the last time I'll come across these though.

i just got this today

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxZqp4xxAMM

pal joey collabo w/ one of the burrell brothers. so cool when the piano chords start dubbing out

has anybody heard the burrell's solo album btw? i keep seeing it around. from 1988. i love their stuff on nu groove. such versatile producers

lao gan ma (r1o natsume), Friday, 10 September 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I forgot how good M&VE in Notting Hill is for vinyl, much better than Berwick St. Seen some poorly kept copies of J&L but this was a good one at priced at £4.

man i need to stop being lazy and go to notting hill more often. the exchange in greenwich is always really good for house and techno

I got a reasonable copy of Mothers Day/Fathers Day a while back, it's great. Never heard the Burrell LP, never seen it either. Someone should do an essential Burrell brothers list. Metro $1.15 EP is pretty great but there's such a lot there.

mmmm, Friday, 10 September 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm by no means an expert but a few of my favs are

aphrodisiac - song of the siren
aphrodisiac - just before the dawn
jazz documents - secret code
lisa lee - when can i call you
roqui - i've just begun to love you
utopia project - file #1
ny house'n authority - apt.

Additions to a best of Rheji and Ronald Burrell list:

BME Project - Dancing Through The Night. Great song, basically pop. Could've been a radio hit.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q_og4n-ldP4

Houz Neegroz - How do you love a black woman.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Rwd8F7BOEU

Houz Neegroz - All night long. Sadly, this isn't online, but it is worth the search. More upbeat than the last one.

Grey Areas - Fire. This is pretty simple. Just a riff, basic house beat, vocal sample... for the perfect groove. The Burrells could be about as musical as any of the great house producers of that era but they could also do simple things.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ybBnj7UxL4U

Metro - Journey Through The NY Underground EP. One of their several NYC theme records, this is pretty dark and rough sounding. Not that different from the subway, I guess. Looks like this is the same record as $1.15 but with 2 more tracks. Straphanger is scary sexy.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvVm1utlnAs

NY House'n Authority (best name ever or what?) - Restoration / Renovation EP. Theme record about urban renewal. I wouldn't say that any tracks stand out too much but it's solid Rheji.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANFdVfy-CJU

NY House'n Authority featuring Burrell LP. Kind of a crappy LP to buy because there's 5 songs on each side, but good luck finding the CD. One side has vocal tracks with 5 different vocalists. Not my flavor. The other side has 5 instrumental tracks, each about NYC landmarks (including the WTC). They're all great. As good as any of the Burrell NY theme EPs. Varied styles, moods, sounds. This one might be the best:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ezN0MSemeTc

Phase II - Reachin' (NY Mix). A smooth NY Rheji mix of the bombastic NJ classic. Worth the search if you want to chill with Phase II.

Tech Trax Inc - Tech Trax Inc. Song about itself, embracing the spacey Detroit influence that so much of this NY stuff showed. It builds and builds, and the melodies are as good as any that came from the Burrells. And one big wormy bassline.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Xb7Wo065MQ

Utopia Project - File #3. Techy track in the same vein as Tech Trax Inc, this one has an AMAZING bassline. Great for mixing the bassline over something else and then waiting for the chords to wash in. Especially new stuff, because no one does drums like this anymore. When people hear them, they know it's on.

This is a bit of a longshot, but I have an ID request for a melodic house track (as played by Dinky last night, who was totally on fire, I might add) characterized by pattern of strings (which were something like half a bar in length each) with a female vocal snippet every 4 bars saying something that sounds like "don't let me doooooown" but isn't really decipherable. Thanks.

i like "file 2" from that record best

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZFGcoe_58o

such a satisfying snare sound. you're completely right that nobody uses those early 90s digital drum sounds anymore

the jazz documents record is the one though

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZnkmxkooPc

you gotta love how audacious all those brass presets they were using back then sound now

Okay, few more questions:

Anyone know a track that samples Is it All over My Face that isn't the one by Dajae (I think) that is mostly based on looping "over my face"

And where does that "Go on an' get you some more" sample come from? I also invite people to list tracks, more prominent ones and otherwise, that use it.

Thanks.
