44. Fall Out Boy - "Thnks Fr Th Mmrs" (2007)
21. Paramore - "Misery Business" (2007)

between these two for me. weird that the only two songs of this whole genre to make a good impression on me were both from 07.

goole, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

"Maps" is going to take this by a safe margin.

whoa...did I or didn't I? (cozen), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:43 (thirteen years ago) link

i was about to go to bat for train, but then i realized that i was confusing them for some reason with lol fastball. who are great and fuiud, but from the 90s so never mind

RAWK WHORNES (jjjusten), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:43 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh wait final choices (promise)

Mr. Brightside
Maps
Hard to Explain (although "Someday" would have been my pick)
We You Were Young
Chop Suey

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Friday, 3 September 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

i have never heard this Billy Talent song in my life, singer's voice and drummer's hair are pretty lol

some dude, Friday, 3 September 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link

"12:51" would've been my strokes song

mine too.

Went for "Mr Brightside." That Pearl Jam song is very good too.

i thought it was pretty good & a better direction sonically speaking but julian is a really dreadful lyricist right now imo

that record is sort of a minor classic to me

i haven't listened to it in like 6 years or something to me but my friends & i banged it out back then

Voting Jet, though there are definitely a few White Stripes singles I would've rated higher; just not that one. Also like the Finger Eleven, Killers, Nickelback songs, and a few others. Smart Green Day pick, too. Still, what a sad decade for radio rock.

xhuxk, Friday, 3 September 2010 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, actually, a "few" others is probably exagerrating. (Maybe a couple, though. And there's lots of titles I don't recognize, right off. I do like that White Stripes song; just don't think it's their best. Don't mind "Chop Suey" either, though I basically hate that band.) (Aaaah....Didn't notice the Darkness 'til now! Probably should've gone with that, instead.)

xhuxk, Friday, 3 September 2010 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs - "Maps" (2004)
29. Blink 182 - "Always" (2004)
21. Paramore - "Misery Business" (2007)
17. Red Hot Chili Peppers - "By The Way" (2002)
8. Limp Bizkit - "My Way" (2001)
6. Train - "Drops Of Jupiter (Tell Me)" (2001)

^^one of these i think. there's a couple others i can't remember how they go that i think i like too

max skim (k3vin k.), Friday, 3 September 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

If the deciding criterion is "Which of these songs would you most enjoy hearing if it got played RIGHT NOW?" then frankly I'd vote for "I Believe In A Thing Called Love." If the Strokes pick were "The Modern Age" or "12:51," I'd go for that. Leaning toward Icky Thump, but I do really enjoy that Darkness song . . .

Shock and Awe High School (Phil D.), Friday, 3 September 2010 22:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:01 (thirteen years ago) link

i did not see this!

my favourite thing connected to any of these tracks is the jacques lu cont remix of "mr brightside", which is an all-timer imo; felix da housecat dropping it as his last track while swigging from a bottle of tequila at tdk '06 is one of my favourite raving memories of the past decade

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RSheh22KGQg

but i hate the original, so i might vote for "maps", even though that's nowhere near my favourite yyys song

36. Korn - "Word Up!" (2004)

please can someone reassure me that this is not a cameo cover

lie if you need to

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:13 (thirteen years ago) link

either "fat lip" or "knights of cydonia". think i'll go with latter cause of less love on this thread.

"icky thump" as the one white stripes song?......okaaaaay

the existence of "ocean ave" has always weirded me out because that was my address growing up

markers garvey (The Reverend), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

it's a cameo cover

markers garvey (The Reverend), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

It's not a Cameo cover, honest.

Anyway can't decide between "Chop Suey" or "Hard to Explain" or "I'm Norman Whiteside".

Eejit Piaf (Noodle Vague), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:20 (thirteen years ago) link

that cameo cover is probably the best thing Korn's ever done

harbl essences (crüt), Sunday, 12 September 2010 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link

voted yellowcard.

Probably gonna vote for "Fat Lip" over three or four other songs I really like on this list, just 'cause I still love the video.

don't like anything there except for the strokes, yeah yeah yeahs, and possibly n.e.r.d if i was in the right mood. there's actually a lot of stuff there that i'd happily forgotten and would never have expected to surface for a decade-end list

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

tell me more about your taste

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 September 2010 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

kinda think al is a champ for taking on probably the most uncool period of rock music and giving it such a fair trail, & for extent of scrutiny & 3rd singles off weezer albums and all

samosa gibreel, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:12 (thirteen years ago) link

idk it's not exactly a charity to mainstream rock... a lot of this is a fucking blast to listen to

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 September 2010 02:13 (thirteen years ago) link

not that al doesn't spend more time paying attention to this shit than any critic

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 September 2010 02:14 (thirteen years ago) link

what more do you need to know about my taste? the only bands i like are the strokes and the yeah yeah yeahs :)

charlie h, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:17 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, no i totally agree

by "fair trial" i meant like celebrating what should be celebrated and accepting & engaging w/ commercial rock on its own terms, rather than flat out dismissal or focusing on instances of it acting out of character/crossover with indie trends. don't mean uncool as a negative value judgment either, but it's true!

samosa gibreel, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

xp

samosa gibreel, Monday, 13 September 2010 02:23 (thirteen years ago) link

besides loving this song, i love the video

lots of these songs are classic

Excellent top 2!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 13 September 2010 03:52 (thirteen years ago) link

did you limit yourself to just singles?

"sweetness" is such a jam & the only other contender here is "mr. brightside" which is kinda an indie pick imm? oh just saw "im not okay (i promise)" which has such an easy, sweet lift to it & a killer vid - think ill vote 4 that

swagula (Lamp), Monday, 13 September 2010 03:58 (thirteen years ago) link

mebbe u should read the title

markers garvey (The Reverend), Monday, 13 September 2010 03:59 (thirteen years ago) link

"Beautiful Day" is the only one on this list that is probably actually the best single the band released during the decade

harbl essences (crüt), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link

besides korn of course (proof: my prior post)

harbl essences (crüt), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:01 (thirteen years ago) link

mebbe u should read the title

tbqf i only really understand like a third of the words in the thread title

swagula (Lamp), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:05 (thirteen years ago) link

"favorite al shipley rock single" is definitely a foreign concept to me

harbl essences (crüt), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:06 (thirteen years ago) link

So I guess rock really *is* dead.

Lil Wayans Bros (S-), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:06 (thirteen years ago) link

markers, Monday, 13 September 2010 04:06 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll rep for that train song too

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:08 (thirteen years ago) link

also can't believe korn hired the london philharmonic orchestra to background their cover of the cameo song, jeez

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:09 (thirteen years ago) link

think the results are gonna come down to mr. brightside vs. maps, which somehow also seem to be the safest 'indie' choices

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i think my chem has a chance altho they might split votes

J0rdan S., Monday, 13 September 2010 04:10 (thirteen years ago) link

also "fat lip"

markers garvey (The Reverend), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I love MCR but for some reason I dunno if any of their songs individually can stand up to the rest of the list...maybe if the black parade were on here

subtle like the g in 'goole' (dayo), Monday, 13 September 2010 04:19 (thirteen years ago) link

would've voted darkness

billstevejim, Tuesday, 14 September 2010 06:19 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah that makes sense. Would be curious to see your list of rock songs that did not appear on a Billboard rock chart.

eh, if i did that, it'd surely be just a scrambled assortment of deep cuts from my favorite rock albums of the decade (i.e. the thing that i rag on P&J voters for doing with their singles ballots every year, which is why i prefer putting together singles lists like this).
