al ship's top 50 rock singles of the 00s -- which is your favorite?

haha i seriously like or love every song in that top ten except for that train song.

vote will probably be "mr. brightside" or "i'm not okay" though.

"Dirty Little Secret," incredibly, only appeared on pop charts and no rock charts, and so was ineligible (although I would've instead picked "Move On," which was ineligible for the same reason)

kudos 2 u ship, but train are a bit too much the calling for me to get behind

the hardest thing about limiting to only 2 songs per band was cutting "Rollin'"

I went w/ a weird Blink pick because for me their best singles are "Dammit" and "What's My Age Again," which are both from the '90s, not as big on "All The Small Things" or "I Miss You" but I love that whole self-titled album and the less popular singles from it

man, i'm probably the biggest strokes stan on this board & "hard to explain" is one of my least favorite songs of theirs

when i saw julian solo a few months ago that was the only strokes song he played

i've always been partial to "down"

That Train song is their only hit that i've ever liked ever, but I really have no desire to hear it again

"Always" is crazy underrated and deserves the love it gets here

that one ages more and more now that they've put out material after 'room on fire' and it's become incredibly relevant that they should've gone the fun, frothy, cars route instead of the leather jackets & metal studs black-and-red motif that they chose

Voting Jet, though there are definitely a few White Stripes singles I would've rated higher; just not that one. Also like the Finger Eleven, Killers, Nickelback songs, and a few others. Smart Green Day pick, too. Still, what a sad decade for radio rock.

I do like that White Stripes song; just don't think it's their best. Don't mind "Chop Suey" either, though I basically hate that band.) (Aaaah....Didn't notice the Darkness 'til now! If the Strokes pick were "The Modern Age" or "12:51," I'd go for that. Leaning toward Icky Thump, but I do really enjoy that Darkness song . . .

kinda think al is a champ for taking on probably the most uncool period of rock music and giving it such a fair trail, & for extent of scrutiny & 3rd singles off weezer albums and all

idk it's not exactly a charity to mainstream rock... a lot of this is a fucking blast to listen to

by "fair trial" i meant like celebrating what should be celebrated and accepting & engaging w/ commercial rock on its own terms, rather than flat out dismissal or focusing on instances of it acting out of character/crossover with indie trends. don't mean uncool as a negative value judgment either, but it's true!

i've been thinking the last few days that part of the reason maps is so incredible is that it creates this entire coherent world unto itself where everything falls exactly into place, the way the guitar octaves in the chorus echo the intro and the single note lines spin around the vocal melody it's like yo the indie rock lord of the rings has arrived

eh, if i did that, it'd surely be just a scrambled assortment of deep cuts from my favorite rock albums of the decade (i.e. the thing that i rag on P&J voters for doing with their singles ballots every year, which is why i prefer putting together singles lists like this).
