Very nice, very well composed.
That 85mm f/1.2 is a wonderful lens, have you splashed out on one?

Er, it's good but it's not that good... (/Carry On)

No, no - that shot was from the few days in July when I had one on hire for the wedding. It's everything everyone says it is. But if we're going to spend £1700 on something, an old VW Polo might be more useful...

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Great cloud, btw!

Michael Jones, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Didn't you rate it? I've seen some amazingly clear crisp with beautiful dof shots from them.
Also, if i could afford £1700 on a lens, i'd probably be driving something pretty decent anyway :)

not_goodwin, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 14:42 (thirteen years ago) link

Sorry, I was making a crude joke. Yes, it really is amazingly good. I did wonder about the 85/1.8 though, how much lighter and faster-focusing that is, and whether it gets you 90% of the image quality at the expense of a stop of speed, at about 1/6th the price. But hard to imagine using anything else for a wedding reception.

Oh no! How's yr insurance?

Michael Jones, Sunday, 29 August 2010 18:18 (thirteen years ago) link

£150 excess, (which is a lot at the moment as i'm jobless) but i'm worried they'll want me to get it repaired. I'd rather not have a repaired 4 year old camera. Was hoping to get the money, maybe a 500D body only which is the same price now as what i paid for the 400D years. Maybe even something second hand, but i'm wary of that.

bad week for me too.... had my Nikon D70s stolen last friday while slightly drunk and took my eye of my bag. but not blaming myself for thief.

borrowed a Canon EOS 300d to finish off an assignment, but not feeling it as much as the Nikon.

developed my first rolls of B&W over the weekend. pretty exciting! resolving to shoot 1 roll a day, hopefully. we'll see.

Sorry to hear about lost/damaged/stolen cameras. I'm hoping I had my dose of ill-timed cameralessness when the 300D shutter mech failed on my daughter's 4th birthday last year. Touch wood.

I'm about three weeks behind, so...

Those seem to have a 70s American look about them. Serene civic space in the first and corporate paranoia in the second (is that cropped?).

Michael Jones' second pretty great too.

no time for the prussian death cult (nakhchivan), Monday, 6 September 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

hah, yeah- the use of B&W, grainy high contrast film does place it pretty firmly in the 50s-70s American aesthetic.

I'm gonna try a different developer next time, hope to get a less-contrasty, more fine-toned image.

Great work again people.
I'm a bit obsessed with the sky, it's all i seem to shoot lately. I really need to find something else to shoot as i'm getting a little bored with it.
Anyway, here's a shot of the sky :)

Flickr, there's always something going on, there are meets and all sorts of gatherings all over the world.
Find a local area group and look on the forums, that's where you find out what's going on near you.

Gorgeous, not_goodwin.

It's Monday - time for a photo. We do bake-off challenges at work, so I get to practise my food photography (of the sort where you have about 2min to fire off a few shots before everyone piles in and scoffs everything). Obviously, I can't help myself with the shallow DoF... this was Pimms jelly with fruit.

these are fairly old, but I kept coming back to them in my Lightroom archive, decided to order 20x30 MPIX prints (so freaking easy and cheap to get giant prints now - the largest I could print in a real darkroom was on 16x20 paper as the color processor couldn't go larger and trying to do it in the B&W darkroom was torture)
I can't decide if there's any value to them or if I'm just weird
