i know everybody else has already forgotten abt it but can we have one chillwave thread that isnt entirely ¡LOLwave! or w/e

calm down and have your feminax(ico) , ive been eagerly listening to the tracks on this thread to try and find some good bands that may be lost in the blanket cuss this stuff tends to get. If anything this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording. Ive been a fan of the sort of stuff that gets props on 20jfg for a long time. I guess i was just after something wierder a la James ferraro

Chillwave casts its chill nets wide

I dont really get how most of this stuff differs from twee indie of the last 20 odd years.

it kinda doesnt? thats the point? i mean i feel like the most of the stuff that 'started' chillwave was unabashedly more masculine & hippie-ish than sarah records or w/e but the big difference is probably just that now cheap synths/laptops are the focal instrument rather than guitars

this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording

haha well there's weirder stuff that could probably get classified as 'chillwave' considering how loose plax & i are being itt but i tend to think of chillwave as an attempt to translate some of the sounds/textures + aesthetic concerns from 'weirder' psych/drone/freak stuff of the past few yrs into a 'pop' format

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:59 (4 years ago) Permalink

nice def. but i think it kinda cuts out the unifying *concerns* of chillwave wrt nostalgia and how that is synthesized via emphasis on paratextuality etc.

also w33d

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:23 (4 years ago) Permalink

that is, its not "john hughes movies soundtracks" its "watching john hughes movies on crappy vhs/shitty quality stream while stoned in the afternoon"

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:26 (4 years ago) Permalink

also the extent to which chillwave might be more of a curatorial aesthetic (via balearic) so that lamborghini crystal and wild nothing are both w/n the framework w/o necc sharing a lineage.

also i srsly <3 that cherry chapstick upthread Lamp

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:30 (4 years ago) Permalink

yah 4 sure...

the most important things abt chillwave are probably a) the yearning for escape into the 'idealized past'/childhood/pop culture nostalgia b) sense of aimlessness/unbeing/displacement as stand-in for current social/economic anxieties cf:

i taught my friend the word chillwave yesterday. he doesn't know anything about the 'scene' but he hangs out with this dude whose band is on mexican summer. for maximum lolz i told him to ask the guy if he want to go smoke a doob on the beach and listen to some chillwave

Pearl Harbor are great. The ep on Mexican Summer is such a wonderful treat. They recently changed their name to Puro Instinct, so be warned.

I really don't think Sun Araw is at all chillwave. Many xposts above.

van smack, Thursday, 19 August 2010 23:30 (4 years ago) Permalink

that track kind is but the whole not not fun aesthetic which i guess is kinda the fort thunder aesthetic feels like the springboard for chillwave more than 'actual chillwave'. mb 'weirder' and 'druggier' but not that far off, really, in the end.

okay looks like there isnt any high wolf shit on youtube but:

hey plax have u heard the beach fossils s/t? listening to it again right now & its v v pleasing

chill.wav (Lamp), Friday, 20 August 2010 06:56 (4 years ago) Permalink

i like it but it works better on a track by track basis, as an "album" it's wayyy to samey

btw this is not in the spirit of this thread. i think its important that chillwave means a lot of things, kinda prefer this end of it to the more straight up "indie in a windtunnel" aesthetic tho obv i like both. (see my above def. for what ~chillwave means to me~)

also wrt beach fossils, i dont think i've heard any of the stuff from the last few posts before. but that outer limits thing is pretty great.

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:08 (4 years ago) Permalink

haha its kinda debatable whether beach fossils despite the misleading 'beach' are really all that chillwave & not just w/e were calling indie but i mean theyre songs are called shit like 'youth' and 'vacation' yknow?

& it does get a little same-y 11 tracks are probably too much but i really really like "daydream" and "youth"

chill.wav (Lamp), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

well im glad i didn't post that coil track that i was all "proto chillwave" abt y/day itt

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:21 (4 years ago) Permalink

now that we have the chill-police on our backs

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:21 (4 years ago) Permalink

looooool is it this one?????

chill.wav (Lamp), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:23 (4 years ago) Permalink

i've prolly heard the wrong tracks but coil seem about as unchill as it gets

trade practices cat (electricsound), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:23 (4 years ago) Permalink

yeah i mean coil area all bad vibes, but at the heart of it all is dreamy and woozy but in a heat stroke way i think.

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:27 (4 years ago) Permalink

lamp that one you posted is so great btw!

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:29 (4 years ago) Permalink

yah plax the whole musick to listen to in the dark disc is really good! v proto-chillwave imo

one thing about real estate that pisses me off is that drum sound that a lot of chillwave acts have but that they do the worst version of that i've heard.

plax (ico), Friday, 20 August 2010 09:10 (4 years ago) Permalink

hope the chill-police won't get after me for posting this unorthodox piece of chillwave

oh, and I really dig that Outer Limits Recording tune, sounds like Daft Punk trapped in your basement
