Hmm, might be going to the Bay area for a few days in early december. I thought I was done with travel for the year.

Ed, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Okay, kind of feeling jealous of your prospective travel, even if you seem less than excited!

Sara R-C, Friday, 14 November 2008 16:56 (fifteen years ago) link

Yes I've not left Texas in four years and would go ANYWHERE!

Bella Swan Song (Susan), Friday, 14 November 2008 16:59 (fifteen years ago) link

I shouldn't be two jaded but I really need to focus on getting myself ready for pittsburgh but I had a long chat with a california VC who said that if I want to get a good internship next summer in a good cleantech startup I should get out there and start networking now and that he'd set up some meetings. I have enough airmiles and hotel points to make this a relatively cheap affair. Nonetheless 3 days in silicon valley techno-parks selling myself is not what I want right now. Also kind of considering dropping some stuff at the storage in NYC on the way.

^NB this kind of glib attitude to air travel is why we are going to hell in a handcart and I am going into cleantech.

Ed, Friday, 14 November 2008 17:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Here, I'm pretty content with my lot as well. Just in a different way.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 November 2008 17:36 (fifteen years ago) link

Ned it just freakishly happy.

Ed, that makes sense. I like to travel, but it is stressful and it seems that you have been all over the place this past year. Not to mention that it isn't just a free choice thing!

Sara R-C, Friday, 14 November 2008 17:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Yay freakish!

(I essentially always try and keep in mind that whatever disappointments I deal with are as nothing compared to what others are going through, sometimes drastically so. This year alone my sister's long term relationship completely collapsed, two dear friends split in what's proven to be an outrageously bitter divorce, and another is dealing with a whammy of sudden unemployment combined with increasing need for stable finances for his whole family -- all things that help me keep a certain perspective, however flippantly demonstrated.)

Ned Raggett, Friday, 14 November 2008 17:45 (fifteen years ago) link

Ned OTM. There's a woman from Northfield who went through the same nursing program that I'm doing now 5 years ago. She's divorced, has four kids, has been working as a nurse... and now has a brain tumor and can't work. I've never met her, but she's a friend of a friend and obviously has the St.K nursing program connection; I'm hoping to go to a fundraising benefit for her in town tonight. And that's just one example of many of how life can unexpectedly implode... I try to appreciate my luck while I have it!

Sara R-C, Friday, 14 November 2008 17:53 (fifteen years ago) link

It is a gorgeous day, low 80s, a bit hot but not summer hot. Just had a long lunch of ceviche and margaritas out in the sun. *sigh* Can I go home now?

(and empathy to everyone else you know who is in bad shape. Good moments must be taken when you find them.)

START PLAYING WOW

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Friday, 14 November 2008 20:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I love how Dan vastly overestimates my computer skillz. I have barely mastered how to play Bejeweled!

Sara R-C, Friday, 14 November 2008 20:40 (fifteen years ago) link

There's an add-on that lets you play Bejeweled while you're on one of the long flights from one city to another.

You're scaring me, Dan.

I am looking forward to a quiet night of watching a movie and going to bed early and continuing to not study.

Fundraiser was great, btw; wish I had tons of money to bid on the cool stuff.

hello saturday! i slept for 10 hours woah! need about 20 more and i'll be in ship shape!

watching this ep of frontline about atwater and all the dirty tactics used to crush dukakis in 88, including responses from dukakis! it's fascinating how much he admits that his campaign was just not on top of responding to negative ads/attacks, etc. what a shame. also lots of footage of young w stumping for dad - CREEPY!

Is that the "Boogie Man" thing I failed to watch on Tuesday night? I have that in my Netflix queue along with everything else ever filmed.

sara, if you're still awake i need some medical advice:

jordan had a crash while mountainbiking today, and seems to have sprained his wrist (it took the brunt of the landing). it's not swollen, there's no apparent bruising, but it's hurting like hell from the base of thumb right round his wrist. he's able to move it, but with pain. there's no tingling or numbness in his fingers. we iced it, applied arnica gel, and he's taken some advil. he tried strapping it but that only seemed to make it hurt more.

is there anything else we should do?

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 16 November 2008 05:46 (fifteen years ago) link

in other news: jordan found a bar in alameda called 'the new zealander'. we will visit next week and see if i can score some free beverages with my accent and passport.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Sunday, 16 November 2008 05:47 (fifteen years ago) link

Elevate and Ice seems like a good idea to me.

Ed, Sunday, 16 November 2008 08:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Sorry RR, I was dead asleep last night. Ed is right; RICE = Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate. Are you sure he might not have a fracture somewhere? If it doesn't get better over the next few days you might want to head in for an x-ray, just in case, too.

Sara R-C, Sunday, 16 November 2008 17:46 (fifteen years ago) link

sara, what does it mean when things swell but do not turn black and blue? this has happened to me several times and i always thought it meant the injury was less severe and did not need to be treated, but that may be me being dumb...

;n_n; (tehresa), Sunday, 16 November 2008 17:54 (fifteen years ago) link

you got erection?

mookieproof, Sunday, 16 November 2008 18:04 (fifteen years ago) link

;n_n; (tehresa), Sunday, 16 November 2008 18:21 (fifteen years ago) link

true

mookieproof, Sunday, 16 November 2008 18:27 (fifteen years ago) link

okay, thanks for the LOLs you guys. (final test tomorrow - impending DISASTER, so I need the ROFLs)

More seriously - maybe you just don't bruise easily, tza? Not everyone does. (OTOH, I get bruises and can't imagine where they came from - huge bruises sometimes! I blame this on having clown white skin and absurd genes.)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 16 November 2008 19:42 (fifteen years ago) link

uh well, in the event of a force hitting me, i bruise quite easily. i am thinking more about times when i have twisted ankles and they end up quite large, but not black and blue. i also have super white skin!

;n_n; (tehresa), Sunday, 16 November 2008 19:44 (fifteen years ago) link

Huh - well, I don't know - I just think that's kind of individual; obviously, though, if you have previous experience with injuries not being so bad and then you get bruising with everything else, that could be worse. (Shorter answer: yeah, I dunno! - but pain and swelling are pretty clear signs of inflammation and should be respected with rest/ice/compression/elevation - and don't forget to consult an actual professional if you are really worried; I'm just a student nurse. And hey, I'll probably fail my final tomorrow and be forced into dispensing homey advice as a bartender soon...)

Sara R-C, Sunday, 16 November 2008 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

you can be the staff nurse at my center for experimental/multidisciplinary performance with an emphasis on creating cool new stagins for vocal chamber music!
