like larry david's cye character is pretty horrible, but somehow likeable. louis' character in that scene seemed completely devoid of even the tiniest shards of charisma or intersting-ness

dell (del), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 16:12 (thirteen years ago) link

David's character deals with social anxiety by trying to dominate it and the show climaxes when he fails.

Louis's character deals with social anxiety by being completely overwhelmed and bewildered by it and the show climaxes when he breaks the whole thing down in one very intense, cathartic conversation

Finale is not until Sept. 7 I believe.

i luv this show

This is def. shaping up to be one of the strongest first seasons of any show in recent memory - lots of memorable scenes and odd touches, but still feels like it has room to grow and change. The fact that this last ep was suspenseful and touching as well as being funny as hell is a testament to its unique malleability - people call it CK's Curb, but that show is so much more traditional.

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 August 2010 07:11 (thirteen years ago) link

I was thinking the exact same thing, Simon (about it being a really strong first season), tho I immediately thought that Community's first season is still stronger.

Mordy, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 07:20 (thirteen years ago) link

See I love Community, but I think it suffered from its insanely huge season length, which inevitable resulted in 6 or 7 "meh" episodes. I could see it hitting a pretty insane stride when it comes back, though, since the back half of the first season went from strength to strength. (I also hope Harmon has the balls to limit it to 3 or 4 seasons as he's hinted at in the past.)

Simon H., Wednesday, 18 August 2010 07:49 (thirteen years ago) link

This is clearly and completely the best show on television, bar none.

it was real real but i couldnt get past why would you shush a pack of teenagers like that (borderline dickishly) and some sort of malicious harrassment (at the very least). is that done? seemed like even louie (actor louie) had trouble walking it back a far enough to make his sheepishness 100% believable.

As for not expecting it ... I don't think he considered the repercussions of his actions much.

Which is not the first time on the show that he made an unwise decision.

when Louie cuts to commercial, the commercials seem that much more bullshit in comparison

also, NOT a dickish move as far as i'm concerned.

well, I dunno; if you're gonna tell them to be quiet, you can't very well be like "um guys could you keep it down a bit"

Incidentally, that exchange really would be unlikely to happen; the guy behind the counter would've gotten involved. But man it felt real.

I've been in plenty of late night spots where the people behind the counter are completely useless.

thing about that scene where he stalks his would-be attacker was that there were ample shit-just-got-real fight scene opportunities and that, the dad putting hands on his son notwithstanding, they resolved their problems with words (mean words initially, but words)

kinda wish the mom/dad of the bully had asked "why did you follow my son home, you creep?"

similarly, the heckler scene....it's like publicly he unleashes fury, but in their private conversation he's like "that really hurts my feelings when you talk during my set". i dunno, at the <3 of ck's shit, even at his worst...like the least otm moments, i always feel like there's a fundamental sense of decency 2 him.

I find it hard to believe a jock would put louie down so eloquently IRL, but that's beside the point I suppose. I love how he seems to have made a catalog of life's most uncomfortable moments, they're almost so bad that I feel like I've repressed them and only remember them when I see them on the show. Like after the episode with his mother I wondered if I kind of hate my parents too.

Anybody have any idea how well this show is doing in terms of numbers? Critically it's a darling and obviously I want it to last a decade, but what's the word on renewal?

this isn't STRAWBERRY 0_o it's RAWBERRY (forksclovetofu), Friday, 20 August 2010 07:09 (thirteen years ago) link

a few weeks ago fx announced there would be a second season, which as i understand it is way earlier than they necessarily needed to be making a decision like that, so that's a pretty good sign. don't know the numbers, but between this + archer i'm willing to believe atm that fx has some decent people running things over there

sleepingbag, Friday, 20 August 2010 07:23 (thirteen years ago) link

glad to hear it's renewed.
archer should get better next season, always sunny is in stride, rescue me is circling the toilet, justified was excellent and louis is (again) the best show on television right now.
I have unreasonable hopes for terriers; more likely to be another motorcycle crew show.

The only Louie comedy bits that sticks with me as still genuinely good is his story about going to Russia at the dissolution of the USSR, and the kids smelling paint or the like.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wali_4tdQ-g

strange to say, but Louie was at his best playing with morality. Same goes for his show, all I can remember is the episode where he finishes having a meal with the Chinese family. He is an ass, but I’m willing to make a stake that there was a genuine talent rarely shown in his work in these moments, and so he was not only a “cultural-moment-rider”, and the humour of his bits are not entirely predicated on him being a good guy deep down (though obviously the majority of them are).

I don’t know why I’m defending actually, because these moments were few and far between the dross and vile of his regular work. No desire to watch his new stuff, but I still appreciate some of his bits as stand-alone great work.

Lynch in Louie was classic too.

i would argue that there's a lot of good louis and louie material. he's a good storyteller and has great timing and often a good eye. more's the pity he poisoned the well.

i cannot help if you made yourself not funny (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 21 December 2021 02:54 (two years ago) link

I feel like it’s beside the point whether the material *was* good because it no longer *is* good, for me at least anyway. It’s not like he wrote routines with repeatable jokes or punchlines — the personality he presented (and lied about) is so baked into the gags… I just can’t watch him for more than a dozen seconds without feeling angry or disappointed.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 03:11 (two years ago) link

At the risk of starting a war with weak convictions, my point was that I don't agree that the entire well is poisoned. Maybe it's wrong to try partition the well? Either/or, its probably a silly question to ask in light of the pain he has caused. Here's to the "the death of the author" as I enjoy a story about Russia

Don't know anything about his standup or TV show. All I know is American Hustle, and he's quite good playing a straight arrow FBI agent--Bradley Cooper imitating him is the funniest moment in the film.

you should def be posting in a thread about him then

I generally try to make my frame of reference clear when posting about something, especially when narrow. But let me try again.

He's quite good playing a straight arrow FBI agent in American Hustle--Bradley Cooper imitating him is the funniest moment in the film.

Happy? I'll pretend there's lots of familiarity behind that statement.

clemenza, Tuesday, 21 December 2021 05:20 (two years ago) link

Yeah, what the H Clemenza? If you have a controversial take to post like that, you should at least watch 30+ hours of the man’s work. It’s common etiquette

You can’t really honestly evaluate his character and performance in American Hustle unless you do the work and rank his top masturbation jokes.
