Is Joyride on vinyl anywhere?

Evan, Monday, 16 August 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Besides E-bay or a used record store? It does not appear to be.

curmudgeon, Monday, 16 August 2010 22:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Well yeah, in existence beyond ebay and my local record stores. Didn't know if it came out on vinyl. I worded my question wrong.

Hello. Linda Smith, not heard of her before...

Ned Raggett, Monday, 16 August 2010 22:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Ned, she was a home taper right before it got cool. Had some reviews in Option back when they reviewed cassettes. Her first 3-4 tapes are pretty wonderful. Slightly arty popsongs, and the lo fi for once doesn't really feel like it limits things. Reference points are Raincoats, 60's girl pop, Nico... She got some WFMU attention when she jumped to 8-Track and had a CD, but something got lost with the higher fi. She used to sell a CDR of her first two albums, which is well worth picking up. Maybe CDBaby or something like that...

Linda Smith trivia: she sang on one of the best Crash songs, with Kurt Ralske before he went solo.

Sounds good to me! Will check it out!

Looks like only two albums on CDBaby, both from the past decade:

Some early Linda Smith stuff, apparently.

Nice, thanks! Already found a copy of her Preferences comp on Harriet used as a starting point.

two weeks pass...

...and I'm listening to said Harriet comp and damn good stuff it is so thanks to dlp/curmudgeon/Evan for the prompt. Sad that she's not more famous.

Okay so Linda Smith's cover of "In Love" is one of the most majestic, beautiful things I've ever heard. That is all.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 20:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I think Linda's just quietly living in Baltimore and is not that musically active. Lida's been quiet lately too, but she's recording a new cd.

one year passes...

She got a big shoutout on Sound Opinions this week. I'd never heard of her, but they played a song that was to my ears a dead ringer for Liz Phair. She even had that same kind of tuneless voice.

i randomly thought about Lida Husik recently and looked to see if she'd put anything out lately -- apparently the only thing she's released since 1999 was a 2006 digital single, guess she's out of the game.

and a 2008 guest appearance on a record by something called 'Uberzone'

SoCal electronic performer. That's a flashback to see his name again!

x-post
Her website says she was gonna record an album in 2010 but I guess that never happened.

Had Joyride and My Bag long ago. Used to spin Joyride a lot. Never heard her later stuff. Great voice.

still a fan, in fact I jammed out on "Marcel" a few days ago.

People are still posting on her facebook fan page, but there's no mention of new gigs or an album anymore
