I know we probably have a lot of Billy Joel apologists here (I have indulged), but Piano Man....please. I listen to classic rock stations a lot and the one Billy Joel song they play is Piano Man. It is not rock. It is not remotely cool.

It really bugs me how there's that weak keyboard riff over and over again with the vocal line following it in the chorus... It shouldn't bug me but it does. Blame BBC Radio 2, they kept playing it loads a couple of years back for some reason.

I heard it ad nauseum as a kid, mostly cuz I used to insist that it was "can you hear me, Rudy?". I was obsessed with the Cosby Show at the time.

I half suspect that anyone naming names in this thread is already wrong, because the songs that are TRULY the most boring of all time won't have made enough of an impression on yr brain to have the name of the song stick.

Though I'll pre-emptively note that I'm probably full of shit because my definition of boring is likely different than the ones being used to judge above. Some of these things aren't "boring" to me, they're just irritating.

the best I can come up with is The Kinks' "No Return", which I just looked up on Wikipedia and listened to on Youtube to confirm that it actually exists. nothing offensive — it's just a blank spot on one of my favorite albums, and it vanishes from my brain without fail about 30 seconds after it ends, even though I've heard it many dozen times.

see, my first nominee ("picture") is a song I consider both infuriating and boring. like when something is boring, I can't wait for it to be over so that my interest can be piqued again. and that's how I feel when I hear the song.

do we need to set groundrules in this thread? I don't think we should conflate "boring" with "unmemorable" as they aren't necessarily the same thing (although they certainly can me).

a song can definitely be boring and memorable at the same time. "Picture" is so bland and sappy and MOR that (I assume) it sticks in your head as a particular bad relic of the early '00s. it's definitely boring, but it's dullness is mitigated somewhat by the fact that it distinguishes itself as a terrible song.

to be the most BORING SONG of all time, rather just a run-of-the mill boring song (of which there are thousands), requires a particularly high level of unmemorableness, to the point where it barely even registers as offensive. That Kinks song is the best I can do right now, but it just got a little less boring now that it's been nominated for something.

Every syllable that ever left the mouth of James Taylor. He always sounds completely disinterested, like he's singing the song with roughly the same amount of passion reserved for eating a sandwich or trimming his toenails. To a slightly lesser extent, the sae is true of Jackson Browne.

I find Ruby by the Kaiser Chiefs to be an incredibly dull song, especially when it gets to the guitar solo which has no imagination and just copies the boring vocal melody of the verse.

I heard Chasing Cars recently but I'm not sure that's any more boring than the songs already mentioned by them on this thread.

Part of my irrational dislike of Diamond, however, stems from an awful road trip through Canada or the Poconos or something, where my dad + stepmom INSISTED on playing Neil Diamond Gold on repeat in the car, and the only thing I had to combat it was The Bends, but one side of my headphones was broken, so it was the infuriating futility of trying to play Radiohead loud enough in one ear to block out Neil Diamond from the other.

Boring does not = bad, people! FFS. If you hate neil diamond, whatever, but his songs are like the opposite of boring. They're fun pop songs.

KInda suspect that the most boring songs would be totally forgotten by everyone, making their appearance here pretty unlikely, and making the thread kinda self-defeating.

I've never liked any version of "Lean On Me" tbh, it has a nasty false positive vibe in my head. That Snow Patrol song about lying down in the middle of the road and wanting a cuddle off a gurly-wurly is probably pretty boring too but it brings me out in so much spitting radge that it's hard to tell.

Stereophonics songs may not do anything but dude's voice is like sandpaper on the eardrums, thus ruling them out of "boring"

Think that David Gray album was probably playing during 50% of restaurant meals between 1999 and 2003 but I can't remember anything off it except the title line of "Babylon". Like, Coldplay are pretty boring but I can manage to hate them for it; David Gray was just there, and maybe you'd notice, maybe not.

Look at me with my up-to-date musical references. At least that turn of the century coffee-tablism seems to have died out a bit. Though there's a bunch of stuff these days which is just edged out of boring by fucking awful autotuned vocals, so maybe the kids who grew up with autotune can find that stuff dull, but it sets me on edge too much.

Don't buy the "truly boring songs are forgettable" idea tbh. Truly boring songs are memorable for boring you to tears every time you hear them imo

I saw NRBQ close a show with this song back in 1982. Terry Adams was reading the lyrics from a piece of paper and kept pretending he was falling asleep as the band slogged through it. They left the stage to thunderous applause, came back for an encore and started right back up again with the same song. This time boos.
