This is a really nice 4 track EP (album sampler, actually): Marcello Napoletano - This Movement Must be the Moment

The new John Heckle on Mathematics is nice, too.

I'd probably sell my copy if it wasn't for the hot chip remix. (Display Name), Monday, 16 August 2010 02:55 (2 years ago) Permalink

re: miracles club, the stuff i've heard from them in the past didn't impress me much. i went to see them at 222 hyde, and they didn't show up! van problems or something. they have a track on this compilation that's pretty good though: http://soundcloud.com/pacific-housing-authority

Anyone heard Shed's new album yet?

sawan, Friday, 27 August 2010 13:21 (2 years ago) Permalink

I think you can stream the whole thing on Soundcloud here

I'm not sure if those are the actual track lengths or not, though.

EDB, Friday, 27 August 2010 13:36 (2 years ago) Permalink

Yes, and those are the actual track lengths afaik. I like the new album, but I haven't listened enough to pull out any standout favorites.

mh, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:07 (2 years ago) Permalink

Just listening now, not sure what to make of it really.

If I think of it as a non-Shed, anonymous album by someone I've never heard of it's OK.

The part of me wishing for some more nasty Shedfunk is thinking meh.

sawan, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:10 (2 years ago) Permalink

That Frank Tope mix is lovely

speaking of shed, i've been listening to **tons** of shed lately ... and i'm wonder, t/s: WAX vs EQD??

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 27 August 2010 15:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

new Komisch release is out this week by a new artist we really rate, SP-X. Actually, it's his debut record and we're really proud of him!

djkomisch, Friday, 27 August 2010 16:00 (2 years ago) Permalink

i think EQD is better than WAX

really digging EQD0003, reminds me a lot of classic pure plastic

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 28 August 2010 01:03 (2 years ago) Permalink

it would be rad if rush hour or somebody did a 3cd soloaction box someday

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 28 August 2010 01:04 (2 years ago) Permalink

On those topics I would not at all mind if someone put out a Wax/EQD comp.

EDB, Monday, 30 August 2010 00:45 (2 years ago) Permalink

it all fits on a 2CD tho wax is quite monotonous when it's put end-to-end

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 30 August 2010 03:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

shed really deserves much more discussion than he gets on ILM ... mt kimbie, guido and joy orbison much much less

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 30 August 2010 03:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

Still really, really regret that I was too lazy to walk between venues to see Shed's set earlier this year. His stuff has been consistently up my alley.

mh, Monday, 30 August 2010 03:24 (2 years ago) Permalink

can i just say that i really dislike MCDE's productions and think he's a dumbo?

Honey, I squirted jizz all over the baby (the table is the table), Monday, 30 August 2010 03:30 (2 years ago) Permalink

can i just say you're a twat? thank you

soloaction comp would be so sick

vessels in distress (r1o natsume), Monday, 30 August 2010 04:07 (2 years ago) Permalink

nah i didn't mean that, sorry (but soloaction comp wld be great)

is anyone else feeling the schermate label out of italy? way more unteresting than prologue and all that fashionable shit. think early perlon mixed with the sampledelia side of mff and your half way there. funky post-minimal with weird grainy tape loops. it's very geeky stuff but i can't enough of it at the moment

vessels in distress (r1o natsume), Monday, 30 August 2010 04:21 (2 years ago) Permalink

i guess like russ gabriel and some of the weird weeded out mid-period ifach stuff is also a touchpoint for the wonderful techno record label called schermate from italy

vessels in distress (r1o natsume), Monday, 30 August 2010 04:24 (2 years ago) Permalink

has anyone heard the cdrs from this label? how do you even get hold of them?

vessels in distress (r1o natsume), Monday, 30 August 2010 04:32 (2 years ago) Permalink

I have a lot of time for Shed the DJ too. His FACT and recent RA mix both top dollar.

sam500, Monday, 30 August 2010 04:52 (2 years ago) Permalink

re MCDE no you cant just say that, you have to say why you think so

i think he's quite short on ideas and originality but also real good at what he does on a workmanlike level

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 30 August 2010 05:20 (2 years ago) Permalink

also re: a lot of the shit people say about him he's done a lot to promote detroit house so it's a bit like rob hood fans complaining about mnml

Ouch. It was definitely a festival highlight for me. Probably 2nd best, actually.

Though it continues to bother me, the idea of MCDE (i.e. the name and image) was the reason I avoided him for a long time, but when I heard Deep Cuts 3 and 4 I was too enamoured to uphold my embargo.

EDB, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 04:14 (2 years ago) Permalink

the real good as a craftsman point is apposite, I'd say.

posted this to fb yesterday, but really liking this EP by UK act WAFA, who play a hard, electro-styled house, with dubstep production touches

other recent likes:
KA SO RE - Bunnies (neo filter disco-ish house from finland)
Lone - Pineapple Crush (first straight house from Lone that I've heard, in similar vein as Tensnake Coma Cat)
Tornado Wallace - Paddlin (deep beardo? smoooove)
Juana Molina - Un Dia [Reboot mix] (nice minimal remix of this song)
It's A Fine Line - Do the Hot Tar (minimal electrohouse, have liked everything these guys have done so far)
Caribou - Bowls [James Holden mix] (not really a dance track anymore, but really nice and hypnotic)

Dominique, Thursday, 2 September 2010 15:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

ok, that lone is actually nowhere near as house-y as tensnake, closer to a pump compressed joy orbison

Dominique, Thursday, 2 September 2010 16:50 (2 years ago) Permalink

^ that stuff is rad dominique! gotta love how that lone track uses THE ubiquitous hip-house sample ("it takes two", mr. lee's "get busy", etc)

yeah, shed live is something else. definitely worth looking for any mixes of his for download on the web. bodytonic and sonar sets are both good. should really look for some more myself.

sawan, Friday, 3 September 2010 23:15 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'm liking the traveller a lot after a couple listens, and don't understand sawan's 'ok / meh' reaction at all - the short tracks work really well, i think, and let him play up his numbing-repetitive style (the shifting stresses on the bass kick in 'hdrtm' reminds me of sitting in one of those massage chairs at the sharper image) in a varied way that allows lots of interesting/pretty sounds into the mix too (aka why i will probably never come back to the peter van hoesen album, good as it may have been). how often would you really listen to a wax/eqd collection straight through? i see it as a nice way of cutting through the dance album divide between 8 club tracks strung together, minute-long kick drum intros and all, and pantha du prince style twinkle dinkle 'crossover' albums.

what we really need is a t/s between shed and actress, the two classiest album-artists pushing post-'wonky' uk dance in house/techno, no?

lucas pine, Friday, 10 September 2010 01:47 (2 years ago) Permalink

well actually i listened to all of either wax or eqd or both several times over every day the last two weeks ... though i freely admit that i'm pretty tired of both right now and I've switched to all scion versions and sleeparchive EPs all the time

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 11 September 2010 01:20 (2 years ago) Permalink

and there's enough good 4/4 techno out there right now that i'm not sure why anybody would concern themselves too much w/ post-wonky except as a desperate attempt to cling to anglocentrism

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 11 September 2010 01:23 (2 years ago) Permalink

well i doubt there are many people whose only contact with techno is post-wonky or whatever, but i do like both of their takes on the sound (i don't follow these guys too closely but my impression is that these guys are pretty taken with the wonky aesthetic - just look at the hardwax podcasts)

maybe i should have said "album-artists pushing the post-'wonky' aesthetic" instead?

lucas pine, Saturday, 11 September 2010 04:19 (2 years ago) Permalink

you mean the wax treatment podcasts or something else?

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 11 September 2010 17:41 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah wax treatment, i guess calling it all wonky is reductive but there are usually half a dozen dubsteppy tracks for every 4x4 techno track - unless i'm missing something and it's some kind of 'outreach' podcast? is there really that much difference between a shed set and a scuba set these days?

i only brought up actress cause for all the similarity in description between him and the hardwax camp (as in, techno copping trends from dubstep), they're pretty different - i find actress comes out most nicely in mixes, though i can't really listen to more than a few standalone tracks without getting bored with it, while once i start listening to shed the only thing stopping me from going all day is all this other damn music i meant to listen to.

but the most interesting connection here to me is fiedel/MMM's use of sprightly lil silva/emvee style uk funky in wax treatment #8 (and elsewhere?), pretty much the opposite of the disorienting slo-mo style that actress and shed take yet such a perfect complement to the MMM style - more of this please!

lucas pine, Saturday, 11 September 2010 19:02 (2 years ago) Permalink

re: MCDE— he does have a workmanlike precision in his productions, i admit, and there is a crispness to them. i just can't get over the fact that he's a white kid biting a style and getting tons of cred for it. yes, this is a pipecock opinion, but whatever.

Honey, I squirted jizz all over the baby (the table is the table), Saturday, 11 September 2010 19:20 (2 years ago) Permalink

yeah, when i hear a pipecock opinion my opinion is "whatever" too

moonship journey to baja, Saturday, 11 September 2010 19:44 (2 years ago) Permalink

i'm not sure why it matters that he's white - if his name was raheem and he was a north african immigrant to stuttgart would it be cool? there's a big US army base in stuttgart, maybe he got hooked up w/ some black dudes from chicago? would it be cooler if he was a white dude with black friends? cause then i'm pretty sure he'd be approaching pipecock status.

complaining about biting styles is one thing but when you specify "white kid biting a style" it gets SUSPECT.GIF
