now thats not remotely true~~ (xp)
i dig that ducktails disc. that's "chillwave"?
yah - s.thing like "parasailing" is obv closer to the chillwave platonic ideal than that track but theyre def w/in the 'framework' imm.

fwiw stuff like this which is on the more annoying + appropriative end of what i think of as chillwave does remind me a little of that nachtstrom album altho its less about reimagining than just "taking"

have u heard any emily reo plax???? she release(ing?) a tape on breakfast of champions that i really like. but it does make me think of those microphones records (i may be the only person alive wholl still cop to liking those...)
i think i like chillwave that sounds like calvin + hobbes @ their most contemplative and insecure

of all chillwave-related artists, I think that Chaz Bundick (Toro y Moi / Les Sins) is way underhyped, while his tracks often are great, whether he does french touch:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L1_rf40Z5cshttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A7fU7nC4pbQ(this one is a straight Stardust reference and I believe I posted it somewhere before, but the hell with it, there's never enough of quality french house)whether he plays his guitar:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jAtqco2Lbchttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZIxBLdu-tIor whether he does more "traditionally" electronic chillwave stuffhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTgp465n5f0
I've seen him live a week ago and it was fun too

calm down and have your feminax(ico) , ive been eagerly listening to the tracks on this thread to try and find some good bands that may be lost in the blanket cuss this stuff tends to get. If anything this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording. Ive been a fan of the sort of stuff that gets props on 20jfg for a long time. I guess i was just after something wierder a la James ferraro

― The Bartered Bride (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 13:16 (thirteen years ago) link
it kinda doesnt? thats the point? i mean i feel like the most of the stuff that 'started' chillwave was unabashedly more masculine & hippie-ish than sarah records or w/e but the big difference is probably just that now cheap synths/laptops are the focal instrument rather than guitars
this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording
haha well there's weirder stuff that could probably get classified as 'chillwave' considering how loose plax & i are being itt but i tend to think of chillwave as an attempt to translate some of the sounds/textures + aesthetic concerns from 'weirder' psych/drone/freak stuff of the past few yrs into a 'pop' format
― Lamp, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:59 (thirteen years ago) link
nice def. but i think it kinda cuts out the unifying *concerns* of chillwave wrt nostalgia and how that is synthesized via emphasis on paratextuality etc.

also the extent to which chillwave might be more of a curatorial aesthetic (via balearic) so that lamborghini crystal and wild nothing are both w/n the framework w/o necc sharing a lineage.

yah 4 sure...
the most important things abt chillwave are probably a) the yearning for escape into the 'idealized past'/childhood/pop culture nostalgia b) sense of aimlessness/unbeing/displacement as stand-in for current social/economic anxieties cf:

that track kind is but the whole not not fun aesthetic which i guess is kinda the fort thunder aesthetic feels like the springboard for chillwave more than 'actual chillwave'. mb 'weirder' and 'druggier' but not that far off, really, in the end.

treeship, i don't know, i didn't get a chillwave vibe from that gypsy and the cat tune, apart from the treatment of the vocals maaaaybe, just seemed to have that same peter hook new order sound that is like the main fucking hallmark of most generic indie pop/rock imo
― marcos, Friday, 9 January 2015 16:28 (nine years ago) link
i always thought g&tc were on some anodyne washed-out new order/fleetwood mac thing but i've only ever heard them in the dentists office
― don't ask me why i posted this (electricsound), Friday, 9 January 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link
yeah, i think "anodyne washed-out new order/fleetwood mac" is a good description for most mass market chillwave. there were a few great chillwave acts but there was also a flood of generic "chill" acts -- both synth and guitar-oriented -- and i think those are also part of the movement. i heard this g&tc song for the first time at shake shack.
