arthur russell never gets blamed for chillwave

plax (ico), Saturday, 14 August 2010 03:11 (4 years ago) Permalink

this sounds as much like nostalgia for my suburban american HS in the '80s to me as anything else

plax (ico), Saturday, 14 August 2010 03:22 (4 years ago) Permalink

idk im not as good at this as u

plax (ico), Saturday, 14 August 2010 03:52 (4 years ago) Permalink

now thats not remotely true~~ (xp)

i dig that ducktails disc. that's "chillwave"?

yah - s.thing like "parasailing" is obv closer to the chillwave platonic ideal than that track but theyre def w/in the 'framework' imm.

fwiw stuff like this which is on the more annoying + appropriative end of what i think of as chillwave does remind me a little of that nachtstrom album altho its less about reimagining than just "taking"

have u heard any emily reo plax???? she release(ing?) a tape on breakfast of champions that i really like. but it does make me think of those microphones records (i may be the only person alive wholl still cop to liking those...)

i think i like chillwave that sounds like calvin + hobbes @ their most contemplative and insecure

╟╨╥╢╟╫╢╟╥╨╨╢ (Lamp), Saturday, 14 August 2010 03:54 (4 years ago) Permalink

oh man the microphones were totally chillwave

but phil elvrum as a producer is more like deerhunter-style spectorism

also lamp I luv u for the AR Kane reference upthread, good call man

How To Dress Well is amazing live. His voice sounds really good not annoyingly over distorted all the time.

Duran (Doran), Saturday, 14 August 2010 08:39 (4 years ago) Permalink

of all chillwave-related artists, I think that Chaz Bundick (Toro y Moi / Les Sins) is way underhyped, while his tracks often are great, whether he does french touch:

(this one is a straight Stardust reference and I believe I posted it somewhere before, but the hell with it, there's never enough of quality french house)
whether he plays his guitar:

or whether he does more "traditionally" electronic chillwave stuff

I've seen him live a week ago and it was fun too

that last track may have more to do w/ post-justice frankendance or w/e but i think it still fits okay w/in the chillwave ~idea~

or is anything thats 'danceable' automatically stop being chill? idk...

I dont really get how most of this stuff differs from twee indie of the last 20 odd years.

straightola, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 09:26 (4 years ago) Permalink

apart from the occasional band which sound like the filler tracks on a kid 606 album

straightola, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 09:27 (4 years ago) Permalink

then get off this thread

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 10:10 (4 years ago) Permalink

calm down and have your feminax(ico) , ive been eagerly listening to the tracks on this thread to try and find some good bands that may be lost in the blanket cuss this stuff tends to get. If anything this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording. Ive been a fan of the sort of stuff that gets props on 20jfg for a long time. I guess i was just after something wierder a la James ferraro

Chillwave casts its chill nets wide

The Bartered Bride (Ówen P.), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 13:16 (4 years ago) Permalink

I dont really get how most of this stuff differs from twee indie of the last 20 odd years.

it kinda doesnt? thats the point? i mean i feel like the most of the stuff that 'started' chillwave was unabashedly more masculine & hippie-ish than sarah records or w/e but the big difference is probably just that now cheap synths/laptops are the focal instrument rather than guitars

this is the first time ive realised how straight-up most of it is, the freak element seems to have been slimmed down to delayed vocals/shoddy recording

haha well there's weirder stuff that could probably get classified as 'chillwave' considering how loose plax & i are being itt but i tend to think of chillwave as an attempt to translate some of the sounds/textures + aesthetic concerns from 'weirder' psych/drone/freak stuff of the past few yrs into a 'pop' format

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 August 2010 16:59 (4 years ago) Permalink

nice def. but i think it kinda cuts out the unifying *concerns* of chillwave wrt nostalgia and how that is synthesized via emphasis on paratextuality etc.

also w33d

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:23 (4 years ago) Permalink

that is, its not "john hughes movies soundtracks" its "watching john hughes movies on crappy vhs/shitty quality stream while stoned in the afternoon"

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:26 (4 years ago) Permalink

also the extent to which chillwave might be more of a curatorial aesthetic (via balearic) so that lamborghini crystal and wild nothing are both w/n the framework w/o necc sharing a lineage.

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:29 (4 years ago) Permalink

also i srsly <3 that cherry chapstick upthread Lamp

plax (ico), Wednesday, 18 August 2010 17:30 (4 years ago) Permalink

yah 4 sure...

the most important things abt chillwave are probably a) the yearning for escape into the 'idealized past'/childhood/pop culture nostalgia b) sense of aimlessness/unbeing/displacement as stand-in for current social/economic anxieties cf:

i taught my friend the word chillwave yesterday. he doesn't know anything about the 'scene' but he hangs out with this dude whose band is on mexican summer. for maximum lolz i told him to ask the guy if he want to go smoke a doob on the beach and listen to some chillwave

idk thats pretty convincing but im not sure "the past is perfectly ours" i think the fraught knowability/unknowability of the past is central to how i grasp this whole thing. like the pieces are there but you can never put them back together again.

℗⎣▲✘ (ico), Sunday, 7 August 2011 18:55 (3 years ago) Permalink

yeah i think your right i was p drunk when i wrote this, not that i dont stand behind the central idea but its not totally coherent... there are tensions i guess btw the past as lost eden and the past as slave to the present, thats part of whats driving the music really

Lamp, Sunday, 7 August 2011 20:29 (3 years ago) Permalink

man vondelpark is p great - really into 'california analog dream' its kinda like a mid 00s indie rock song stretched taut and irradiated

Lamp, Tuesday, 9 August 2011 06:26 (3 years ago) Permalink

i dont where else to post about this but ken seeno's tape on nna 'invisible surfer on an invisible wave' is so fucking great just these incredible expanses of synth and space but firmly rooted in the 'natural'. i guess it probably belongs on the knew age thread but i like this thread better and knew agers are just chillwavers in the morning anyway

ç(° ·· °)ↄ CRUEL HAND OF FATE O YEAH █▬▬ (Lamp), Thursday, 18 August 2011 01:03 (3 years ago) Permalink

wet wings - feeeel it

first track off a superlimited tape on atelier ciseaux this kinda feels like a skeleton take on pastoral moanwave but then the drums come in halfway through and it starts to hit harder and the girls voice sounds like wind in the grass

melted toys - lost connection

probably not the best song on their ep but i like how much of a pastiche this particular song is the heaviness of the affections make it seem kinda rootless a bristol board collage of montone dreampop and euro influences

god hates fats (Lamp), Friday, 26 August 2011 05:35 (3 years ago) Permalink

this evening i was djing a party where they wanted '90s classics' and it was both disconcerting and unremarkable to see ppl barely out of their teens dancing along to mid-90s house classix; there was little to no divide btw the people who might be old enough to remember the songs i was playing fondly & the people for whom these songs should have little personal/historical meaning... isnt one of the consequences of technology to help divorce cultural artifacts from history?

That's it right there. Good music is good music. Young people aren't supposed to be able to recognize and enjoy good music? The whole cult of the new, and the obsession with timeliness is imo, a strange type of insanity promoted by journalists who are taught to think only about the news.
