i like almost everything about the autotune news except for the autotune news dudes. they ruin the whole conceit by jumping in there themselves.

I think most of the humor re: the Dodson thing is related to all those "stupid criminal" stories that you always hear about, only this one's got the tables turned even more with the victim and her family publicly threatening the attacker. It's nice to see someone get to mouth of about something you're in righteous agreement with on such a boring formal format as the local news. Plus, the autotune-the-news guys turned it into an impossibly catchy song. I'm not sure how much of it's really race-based. I'm white, btw.
― Fetchboy, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:30 (2 years ago) Permalink
the people I know who are forwarding it on aren't people who are championing what Dodson did, they're making fun of his accent, and the things he says.
― plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:32 (2 years ago) Permalink
I watched it & I thought that dude was pretty awesome. He's got some righteous rage because his sister almost got raped. I thought it made sense that he'd stick up for her like that, even if the way he's letting off steam is a little OTT. Just because some dumbasses are posting it (I know a few) doesn't make him a dumbass.
― spanikopitcon (Abbott), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:34 (2 years ago) Permalink
Oh he ain't a dumbass at all -- I fully support what Antoine said and did, I just don't like how people I know are like "LOL DUDE IS SAYIN GUY IS RAPING EVERYBODY". hell I didn't even realize it was about an attempted rape until I openedi t up as none of the people I know sharing it mentioend that aspect
― plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:36 (2 years ago) Permalink
That's pretty shitty. I'll still vouch for it as being funny to some for reasons other than racism. XXP-Abbott OTM. My FB friend who posted it first is the local organizer for V-Day and super-sensitive to this kind of shit and now she keeps inviting everybody to join his FB fan club, etc.

I don't think people who find it funny are 'racist' as I hate to slap that label on anybody. the acquaintances I know are definitely misguided though.

can't something just be funny, ffs? we (or at least i) found it funny because you just don't see that kind of thing on the news. they let him go on and on and then cut to this straight-faced newscaster talking in her nicest news-voice. i never thought of it as laughing "at" him or at his "accent".

xxxpost I'm not standing on a soapbox talking about everybody who likes this Youtube video - that wouldn't be fair. I'm talking about specific people I know, and who have left comments on their Facebook posts clearly indicating why they found it funny, which I found to be somewhat condescending in those cases. I wouldn't suspect your wife or you (whom I don't personally know) of any such biases.
― plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 17:54 (2 years ago) Permalink
are these specific dudes frequent condescenders? i've noticed a cultural shift where people are more cavalier nowadays about throwing around condescension (for which i blame facebook)

Just saw Double Rainbow for the 1st time. I get it, it's a guy on drugs flipping out, but how it warrants 10 million views is something I don't get. This should really only be popular with Adult Swim potheads or something.
― Beach Pomade (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:43 (2 years ago) Permalink
This guy right here is transcendent though. Easily my favorite TV show since, I don't know, Sifl & Olly. Surreal and inspirational. I emailed him 3 times trying to get him to sell me a DVD of original broadcasts but he can't because it was on public TV.
― Beach Pomade (Adam Bruneau), Wednesday, 11 August 2010 16:45 (2 years ago) Permalink
Double Rainbow is the sort of thing that seems like a real treasure when it has 1000 YouTube hits but not so special when it has 3 million. Common hipster complaint, I know.

Some things definitely cross that line and become 'viral' and suddenly it shows up at the end of the Channel 2 news. It places it in a new context, one that carries all this mainstream baggage with it. You think how are people making money off this, how many people are saying they like it just to seem hip, how many weak parodies are degrading the unique value of the original...

Agreed, plus you kind of have to wonder about the popularity of quitting your job memes in the midst of a recession with high unemployment. For many of us it'd be nice to have a job in the first place...

It's true, but one thing that is shittier than having a bad job is having a bad job in a shitty economy. Because if you complain you're an asshole, but your job sucks just as much (if not more).
