I still don't know what the hollow bullet is for, I /swear/ there's no correlation between it and threads I've clicked on having new answers.

two weeks pass...

i got an email this morning from fo✧✧✧@forumnotificat✧✧✧.c✧✧, titled "What's New in ILx Forum?" the email identified me by screen name. when i clicked through, i went to a different site, which required a password, etc. i stopped at that security-screen.

are email updates something new from ilx (this ilx, i mean)?

Like someone would go to the bother of setting up a fake site so that they could hack into your ILX account and do what exactly?

lol, no i didn't think that's what it was. i just didn't know.

xp: I think a lot of people went and checked out lefora again last week after this thread:

All 'moderator' links on http://www.ilxor.com/faq.html#using don't work and I need to delete an old post from 2002 with my real name on it

As noted in the thread, lefora are on our jock because we brought them so much site activity during our week or so of downtime, so they probably noticed that people were looking at the forum and are now attempting to woo us back.

one month passes...

A few ideas I'd like to suggest, which can be implemented as a user's preference.

1. A counter for bookmarked threads so e.g. it reads 'Ideas for ILX has 4 new answers'.
2. The bookmarked threads to be available at both the top and bottom of the page.
3. A page which shows a list of threads you've posted too and the last time you posted.

"SOCK DAY"

For 24 hours, no prior registration is required to post, just like in the good ol' days. Everyone can post using as many sockpuppets as they like and for the duration all are permitted to be completely mean and snarky to each other, engage in ad hominems all day long... anything meta is allowed...

at the end of the 24 hour period, posting becomes limited once again to registered accounts, and the mods delete all of the objectionable posts that have been made during the previous day. (can mods only delete one post at a time? if so, they can make a party of it to combat the tedium. invite some friends over, throw some good-time music on the victrola, and serve up some hot buttered popcorn and crispy fish nuggets)

it would be convenient if we had the option to view threads in a page-by-page format — say 100 posts to a page. some threads are just so big and overstuffed that they either crash my browser or take forever to load, and the current setup (where the choice is to load either the entire thread or the first 50 and last 50 posts) is far from ideal.

Can TMI be 'logged-on only' but at the same token be 'unidentifiable' on-the-page?

Mark G, Friday, 4 February 2011 14:22 (thirteen years ago) link

i raised pagination when nu-ILX started but keith/stet had objections that i now forget

caek, Friday, 4 February 2011 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

did you want pagination to be the default? I'm thinking it would makes the most sense as an option in the preferences menu. it's their call, obviously.

*make

the loneliness of the dexys midnight runner (unregistered), Friday, 4 February 2011 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

i think i just wanted some exposed user interface to make it possible to read a long thread other than (1) reading along as the posts are made, which is what bookmarks do well, but is not an option for a thread that is old or moves very fast (2) loading a 5000 post thread, which is hard work for even a new machine, especially but not only if gifs or youtube are involved.

seems like this should be possible without creating a preference (which is a sin).

i remember finding the objections not insane though, so maybe it's not.

caek, Friday, 4 February 2011 14:38 (thirteen years ago) link

my reasoning is about the same, although I don't see anything particularly sinful about preferences. actually the smoothest way to do it would be to include a "view by pages" link (comparable to "show all messages") at the beginning of every thread that has more than 100 posts.

the loneliness of the dexys midnight runner (unregistered), Friday, 4 February 2011 14:44 (thirteen years ago) link

but if keith & stet think that isn't doable, then maybe they have an argument against it that isn't apparent to me.

the loneliness of the dexys midnight runner (unregistered), Friday, 4 February 2011 14:47 (thirteen years ago) link

fyi a workaround right now is to click the permalink of the last post before the 'fold' and then you get another page's worth of posts starting with that one, then repeat ad infinitum for long threads

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:09 (thirteen years ago) link

the best thing about ilx is that everything is on one page but i can see why others would like the option for pages in their preferences.

Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:11 (thirteen years ago) link

sorry if this sounds snide, but if your computer can't load a page that is just black text on a white background, the problem probably isn't the website

i don't want to turn of images, sometimes i'm on a slow connection, i have a 6 month old mbp with 4gb of ram and i am l33t.

thanks for the permalink tip.

caek, Friday, 4 February 2011 15:28 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't know n/a, for some of those huge year-end threads my brand new work computer even gets bogged down w/ images turned off. Doesn't crash, but freezes my browser for 30 seconds +

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Friday, 4 February 2011 15:33 (thirteen years ago) link

turning images off isn't really the solution. I want to load images and youtube embeds; I just don't want to load 10,000 of them at once. it's great to be able to see an entire thread on one page, but certain threads are taxing even on a fast computer with a fast connection, so it would be nice to have optional pagination. ilx may have been nothing but black text on a white background in 2001, but we live in the future, and the future is scary and complicated.

is there a way of getting view previous page to work consistently when u have clicked a permalink below the fold? often i've just missed the last few msgs & don't need to read the whole thread

zvookster, Friday, 4 February 2011 17:26 (thirteen years ago) link

-you know when you try to start a new thread and it gives you a list of possible duplicate threads before you can create it? i want something like that when i make a new display name

how about a button on the top bar that lets you quickly switch the style to i-phone style sheet (which I use with my blackberry actually)

homeless romantic (CaptainLorax), Monday, 7 February 2011 00:06 (thirteen years ago) link

also, my old idea posted upthread about having a checkbox under the date range in the search menu for "search for all posts within the past week" or month or year. (so you don't have to enter the date range)

Sorry if already mentioned or technically impossible. When a thread doesn't show all posts, could the collapsed portion of the thread end right before the most recent bunch of posts? So the last collapsed post is 5/25/07 and the visible posts begin with 2/4/11.
