Sounds like the title of a series of books set in a boarding school.

L-R:
Mr. Richardson - the trendy liberal English teacher,
Flashbastard - the school bully,
Mr. Werther - the dodgy ex-con school caretaker,
Donny - head of the 6th form, popular with the ladies,
Timpkins - currently digging a secret tunnel into the school tuck shop,
Mr. Thompson - jaded Physics teacher who hates kids and wishes that he'd kept playing keyboards in that band instead.

at least two of the bands pictured I actually witnessed in the 70s: SAMSON at a high school dance and MUGGSY in a college-town bar (quintet pulling funny faces, posted in between TIGHT & MAGI)

Samson: guy on the far left looks like Jonathan Frakes (Riker in ST:TNG(, guy on the far right looks like the first drummer from Roxy Music.
What did Muggsy sound like?

Samson's bass player (far right corner, the guy kate masonic fancies) was guitar teacher at my local music store (and a classical cellist)

Muggsy were a hard-rocking Detroit area cover band w/two guitars. members went on to play w/Cub Koda and record in the 80s as Weapons

here's a 70s bar band that was really really good (my BFF Ricky played drums) two other members went on to sub for Tom Petersson in Cheap Trick

riff - aka cliff - went on to front off broadway

It's a great name. And those guys dont look like a bar band, they look like they've already graduated to separate limos to shows and no red M&M's territory.

Off Broadway was great -- it seemed like you'd hear "Stay In Time" several times an hour on WLS in 1979. And it still wasn't played often enough.

The Tom Petersson sub...Jon Brant?

Geez, how many Chicago bands are shown here?!?! I know an awful lot of these people. Too bad there wasn't a shot of D'Thumbs when Tommy Aldridge was on drums.

gweimer, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

that's a sore point cause tommy aldridge replaced my buddy but the band broke up not long after that. anyway here ya go...

at least two of the songs on Off Broadway's second LP were in D'Thumbs repertoire. maybe more? gweimer probably knows. I never lived in Chicago. most of the stuff i posted came from two Facebook groups - Detroit Bar Stars and Chicago Bar Bands 1975-82

i was listening to the first two off broadway albums the other day and i kinda liked them despite the fact that they aren't very good. they were no cheap trick. to put it mildy. but a lot of those kinds of bands were better live.

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:57 (thirteen years ago) link

"mildly"

scott seward, Wednesday, 4 August 2010 21:57 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha you got that right. the vocals on those off broadway albums are really mannered, can imagine riff/cliff being pretty smarmy live. I think d'Thumbs must've been "heavier" than Off Broadway. my friend was in a classic 70s bar band after that called Theatre - they had a palm tree logo and lead singer who spieled between songs like a Top 40 DJ. eventually went power-pop w/a different singer.

"we'll be back in fifteen minutes. don't forget to tip the bartenders & waitresses - they work hard!"

these guys are like the best thing out of my hometown Cincinnati besides Bootsy & Lonnie Mack, originally known as the raisin band, later the Bears (w/Adrian Belew) and the Psychodots. versatile.

The Other Side. At a 'ski resort' in Schuylkill County, Pennsy.

Re upstream -- I saw the Bonnie Parker Band. They occasionally opened for major label acts in the southeast Pennsy hinterlands.

Yeah I saw the Bonnie Parker Band once, paired with the Good Rats, naturally. She modeled herself after Suzi Quatro, which is obvious from the picture. Can't really remember too much about her show...

The glam metal bar band that influenced every hair band that migrated from PA/NJ to LA, the Dead End Kids.

At Chubby's in Allentown. I was there.
