No it can't. Good music criticism just makes you listen closer.

Does Haskell still write for a mag?
I don't know, I was gonna ask that question myself.

Adam, you should NEVER read a review in any depth before seeing the movie. Just skim very briefly to see whether it's worth checking out. Well, I guess some writers don't give away too many plot points, but better to err on the safe side. Like Morbius said, read after seeing.

I think Morbius is right about crystallization. I also read criticism because I genuinely like absorbing information. Plus it's nice when the phrasing and the sentence structure is pretty.

I also like all the festival roundups, especially when they're bitchy.

People with Blackberrys sound MEAN.

Soledad (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:02 (eighteen years ago) link

white is otm about mission to mars & depalma in general

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I have no idea what White's opinion is about DePalma or Mission to Mars, but if he liked the latter he is far from OTM.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:25 (eighteen years ago) link

Unsurprisingly he really liked it.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Did he review Crash?

Soledad (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:33 (eighteen years ago) link

THERE IS NONE MORE OTM

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:34 (eighteen years ago) link

The thing with White is, I think he's wrong an awful lot, but (unlike, say, Kael) I rarely think he's wrong in any particularly interesting ways. Kael's overestimation of DePalma has never really convinced me, but I like reading her argument. White just tends to assert things, with cold disdain for anyone who doesn't see things his way.

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:36 (eighteen years ago) link

So Armond White is actually Miccio?

Soledad (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:36 (eighteen years ago) link

(ok, I'm willing to take his word on Crash, which looks terrible)

xpost

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:37 (eighteen years ago) link

I like DePalma but Armond White is completely useless. And Mission to Mars is such a shit film (a couple of moments aside). Also, once he likes someone or something, they can do no wrong, ever. And if he hates someone or something, they can do no right. Unless the hated Denzel redeems himself by working with god among directors Jonathan Demme or something

The only way I'll see another Paul Haggis movie is if he writes a script as a result of being carjacked by Martians.

Soledad (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:38 (eighteen years ago) link

his crash review is phenomenal

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:39 (eighteen years ago) link

I like DePalma too. I just think some critics (starting with Kael) have drastically overrated him.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

although I like how he's one of the few to call "The Sopranos" on being a shit show.

gear (gear), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

mission impossible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:40 (eighteen years ago) link

My favorite Armond White reviews are the ones where he basically reviews other reviews of the same film.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:41 (eighteen years ago) link

and i also hate paul thomas anderson, albeit not as much as he does.

gear (gear), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:41 (eighteen years ago) link

i hate him for impregnating maya rudolph before i could

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:41 (eighteen years ago) link

I haven't seen Mission:Impossible. All I know is that John Voight pulls off a mask of his own face to reveal the Tom Cruise beneath. That sounds good.

Soledad (nordicskilla), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:42 (eighteen years ago) link

hahahaha

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:42 (eighteen years ago) link

pukey cia employee is awesome too - he shd play jimmy corrigan

oooh, Friday, 2 December 2005 23:51 (eighteen years ago) link

the cast wasn't aware that they were filming the bit where Tom Cruise shows off his sleight of hand trickery to Jean Reno and Reno tells him, "try any of that with me and i'll cut your throat"

gear (gear), Friday, 2 December 2005 23:51 (eighteen years ago) link

because he pretty much played the same character in clear and present danger!
