"im talking uk lovers rock though..."
If you're restricting yourself to musicians who actually originate from the UK then you probably want to start with Aswad and Maxi Priest - at least while we're waiting for Dr. C to arrive on thread.

If you're restricting yourself to musicians who actually originate from the UK
isnt 'lovers rock' a uk genre?
― titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 8 February 2008 15:53 (sixteen years ago) link
The genre supposedly originated in the UK, but a substantial proportion (I would suggest the vast majority) of the musicians who were / have been associated with it (e.g. Horace Andy, Ken Boothe, Dennis Brown, John Holt, Gregory Isaacs, Freddie McGregor, Sugar Minott, Delroy Wilson) were actually Jamaican.

If you can find them the three volumes of Rewind Selecta Lovers compiled by David Rodigan are the absolute fucking touchstone for this stuff.

When Tower was having their big sell-off I totally coveted that record (it was $27 or something.) By the time it got to 60% or whatever it was already gone. :(

xpost D.A.M. I just came here to say the same thing. It's an all time classic with so many great songs and this hazy flutey Lee Perry production which I'd say ranks as one of his best. I really like 'Congratulations' and especially 'Don't Burn Your Bridges'. I've been trying to work out what the bass is doing on the latter song for some years and there's something about the harmonics on that that I can't work out.

Xp dog latin -- I love Perry's production but I think it's Susan's voice that is my favorite element. So ethereal and strange.
Nice n Easy is a cover, isn't it? I'm sure I've heard it before, but I can't place it. Possibly orig a bossa nova track?

I knew the Horace Andy version of Nice and Easy before the Cadogan one. I agree about the voice, it's amazing, and I like the effect that's been put on it. I love the disco ness of that record, but just in songs like Shame but the overall vibe and feeling

Elizabeth Archer is all time. The dub is insane. i had always thought it was a Dennis Bovell mix but turns out it isn't.
This is a current big favourite. A cover of the Rose Royce classic that perfectly suits being adapted to a Reggae track.
