T/S White suit and scarf vs. That outfit(!) and that hair (!)

In retrospect, as end of the year mania starts popping up, I'm amazed at how much less I've focused on new music since I started this thread. I blame self-righteous negativity and increased concern for my hearing, not the records themselves, though.

That is the Darryl Pandy I know and love!

Does anyone know much about his 80's solo discography? Is there anything from 85-90 that is worth hearing?

Dollar Bin find of the week: http://www.discogs.com/release/1337960

I don't really remember these ladies from the first time around, but both Adonis and Kevin Saunderson provide real nice acid mixes.

Adonis's "Chicago House Mix":

Part of KMS's "Detroit House Mix":

Would it be a good idea to pick this mix up (the track it is named after is a treasured record in my house)

Returning to Audio Werner. (Let's see if I can write this out without sinking to the depths of complaining about someone being underrated) Dude just holds it down. I just listened to Trust, which is just wonderful, stuff like this and Onandon are so full of vim and vigour, really a pleasure to listen to.

hey anyone know what was the techno|house mix where there was elephant sounds in the jungle at one point? must have been between 2003 and 2005 I guess. wighnomy brothers maybe. that pass and around it was particularly mad and nice and still working

Sébastien, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 07:13 (fifteen years ago) link

You might be thinking about Kiki's Boogy Bytes mix where he layers Andre Kraml's "Safari" (with the elephants) over that great Donal Tierney track . Correct me if I'm wrong.

sam500, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 07:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Didn't Safari have the elephant noises on it anyway? I'll have to dig it out but I guess its this one.

mmmm, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 07:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Not sure. I'm unfamiliar with both tracks outside of this mix. But Safari def has the elephant noises right...

sam500, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 08:07 (fifteen years ago) link

The elephants sound best in the Kiki & Silversurfer remix of "Safari" - it's on Damian Lazarus' Rebel Futurism 2 mix. Not sure if it was used anywhere else.

Tim F, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 10:33 (fifteen years ago) link

Out of nowhere, I find a craigslist posting wherein I for sale are over 500 records for a grand total of $250. Good stuff too, Perlon, Trapez, Kompakt, Force Inc and several more quality labels are cited. It's 2 days later and dude hasn't emailed me back. The suspense is killing me, not to mention worrying about how buying 500 records at once is going to change my life (not necessarily for the better) as I'm the type who needs to listen to an album/record straight, even if it's 500 at once. I don't know how I'd feel about a 5 foot high stack of 12' on my floor which would take like a year and a half to get all listened to (esepecially when, because of my sensitive hearing, I have to be very moderate in my listening habits, which would be affected too. I know I'm coming up with excuses for the sake of it, but when I spent even more on 18 records and 1 CD a few weeks ago, I mean, record buying deal of a lifetime.

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I should probably have put that in a vinyl thread, but it's all 97-04 house/techno, so, y'know.

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 00:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Wow good luck luck with that one. I bet there are some real gems in there. That's a whole lot more realistic than Mr C's ridiculous sale.

You need to start volunteering at a soup kitchen. You might find that it makes your "problem" seems pretty insignificant.

that song on a freebie compilation I got when I ordered a pizza. (Display Name), Friday, 12 December 2008 01:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Ok, seriously. Is it soooooo apparent that I'm trivializing serious issues? Because no one, ever, and certainly not on ILM have ever talked about extremely-minor issues like this, and if anyone, like I, dare do it because I'm a greedy self-absorbed and malevolent asshole? What the fuck?

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 04:49 (fifteen years ago) link

I mean, really. I'm not denying it's an insignificant problem, I don't see where it's appropriate that I should be accused of 1) presenting it as such, and 2) not recognizing salient social issues because of it.

This time, or I'll perc you later (mehlt), Friday, 12 December 2008 04:53 (fifteen years ago) link

What's this 'problem' people are writing about? I don't understand.

sam500, Friday, 12 December 2008 04:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Supposedly, my worrying about buying a bunch of records has caused me to fail to recognize more serious problems, and as such I need to volunteer at a soup kitchen so I can see how trivial they are.

I think the fact you didn't even see a "problem" is much more telling than my getting worked up above.

Admittedly I've been having unprecedented bouts of anxiety and mood swings lately, on top of being a very defensive and kind of paranoid person, which probably makes me look like the asshole (not to say there is an asshole here, but comments like the above, which are generally lazy and cheap attacks, irritate the hell out of me for a number of reasons).

My lack of Christmas spirit, however, is probably due to not being Christian. I don't know what a monorail cat is.

Gees, I am going to spend 500 on music this month but I don't know if I can handle it because having so many records is going to make my life so difficult.

i dont really get why youre deliberately misreading his point and continuing with this nonsense? what does wondering whether its worth having your life clogged up by 500 random 12"s have to do with the fate of a factory worker in michigan?!

resolved, Friday, 12 December 2008 10:03 (fifteen years ago) link

I shouldn't have put it the way I did, I feel bad about it now. It would have been a lot more constructive to simply say that in the grand scheme of things this collection isn't something to get worked up over. If it works out great, and if not, it isn't that big of a deal.

Considering the general tenor of the times(just when you think things can't get worse, they do...), being worried about a stack of records seems and then going out of your way to find problems with said stack seems a bit much.

TS: losing your entire life vs the problems associated with a cheap stack of records.

Be thankful that you are warm and that there is food on the table. You should consider yourself blessed that you can even think about spending money on music much less 500 dollars in the span of a month. I shouldn't have been so harsh but it blows my mind that you could go out of your way to find negatives in the situation.

Fight! Fight! Fight!

Theres negatives in every situation. And while some surely eclipse and trivialize others, that doesn't mean that those negatives aren't there. I generally believe suffering is relative (don't get me wrong, this is NOT a justification of worrying about this as opposed to other things). By the same logic everyone who spends their time here complaining about bad music or the death of vinyl or whatever are wasting their time not worrying about the financial crisis, and then they're wasting it by not worrying about the homeless, and then not worrying about Sudan. . .
A few months ago someone used roughly the same attack on me because I had the audacity to ask why people find new episodes of The Simpsons funny.

I don't particularly want to argue about it, certainly not here (although I guess it beats reading vinyl vs. digital debates any day of the week).

I posted this question in the "identify this tune" thread with no answer, but maybe the folks in this thread might know the answer...

Back in the 90's I saw a video on MTV, and I've never seen or heard it again. It had a house beat, on top of which a black guy did the famous monologue (don't know who originally wrote it): "When you're born, you're pink. When you're sick, you're green. When you're scared, you're white. When you're embarrassed, you're red... [And so on]. When I'm born, I'm black. When I'm sick, I'm black. When I'm scared, I'm black. When I'm embarrassed, I'm black... [etc.] And you have the guts to call me colored?!"

Does anyone know what tune this is? Also, can you tell me where this monologue originally comes from, because I've definitely heard it somewhere else too?
