started playing this with my gf, which has made some of the puzzles go much faster. this is the only video game she's been into watching/helping with besides braid.

I finished the game yesterday. Then I watched my brother play through the first half or so.

[SPOILERS I guess]

The part where there's a small pool of water and someone starts swimming across it - I didn't realise til I watched someone else play it that the swimmer eventually drowns by himself! When I played it I saw what I was going to have to do right away and jumped straight on to him before he got that far. Hence I thought that the solution involved actually drowning the guy, which was even more grim than the reality.

Also watching the game through it really struck me harder how the tone takes a fairly sharp shift from the incredibly atmospheric first act (any human influence is primitive, nature is out to get you and you can explicitly see that everything constructed has been set up as a trap) to the rest of the game (where everything is mechanical and constructed by forces unknown, and complicated gameplay takes centre stage ahead of atmosphere). There are some links between the two like the brainworms, but I think it's tribute to the strength of the consistent aesthetic as well as the individual parts that the change isn't even more jarring.

Flashback, too.

finally got around to finishing this last night. love it, wish it was longer.

i think alone in the dark was in polygonal 3d but it had a similar feel.
This is easy top ten of the year for me in any case.

out of this world and flashback were awesome but unbelievably frustrating. i don't think i ever got very far in either one.

emotional radiohead whatever (Jordan), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 15:17 (thirteen years ago) link

Totally worth fifteen bucks.

i dunno - i mean it was great 'n' all, wonderful atmosphere and superbly constructed puzzles, but far too short, i finished it in a matter of hours, so just in terms of bucks per gametime, wasn't great value.

ledge, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

,,,,,, (few more commas in case there weren't enough there)

ledge, Tuesday, 3 August 2010 23:25 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't wanna play the more playtime = more bux game; that was about as short as i could handle a 15 buck game being but i definitely feel like i got my money's worth

pies. (gbx), Tuesday, 3 August 2010 23:53 (thirteen years ago) link

yep - download a SNES emulator (SNES9x is prob the best for mac, and can be downloaded here: http://mac.softpedia.com/get/Games/SNESX.shtml), then download the roms here: http://www.coolrom.com/roms/snes/

ten months pass...

beat this tonight (couple hours no walkthrough). the first 1/3rd of the game is the most atmospheric, beautiful, frightening puzzlers i've ever played. the city part is a little worse and the factory is very eh. but worth it just for that first hour or so. omg, the spider. one of the scariest video game villains ever?

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 04:57 (twelve years ago) link

i know right!

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 05:03 (twelve years ago) link

also the other children are so evocative and i'm kinda sad that the story didn't develop them any further

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 05:09 (twelve years ago) link

did y'all get the little flea monster avatar bonus?

Don't start the chain you know? (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 29 June 2011 05:59 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, very cuet (not worth $15)

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 06:11 (twelve years ago) link

well when you add the GAME into it though...

how was the thing tnite?

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 06:27 (twelve years ago) link

i'm such a flake. instead of going we all played limbo.

Mordy, Wednesday, 29 June 2011 06:27 (twelve years ago) link

honestly, i'm not really into them; their stories tend toward the mediocre. Crazy jampacked tho'. Like 4500 people!
i woulda put you up on some vip shizz tho' dude so come hang out sometime.

two weeks pass...

So tomorrow at Best Buy, the XBLA triple pack disc w/Limbo, Splosion Man, and Trials HD is gonna be $10. Crazy deal, considering Limbo alone costs $15 from XBLA!

Nhex, Sunday, 17 July 2011 00:03 (twelve years ago) link

oh man, i should've waited a few weeks

Mordy, Sunday, 17 July 2011 00:05 (twelve years ago) link

Wouldn't sweat it - you usually can't install these compilations to the HD, and it'll probably be $5 on Steam by the end of the year anyway, since it's going there soon. I do wonder if the other two are worth the $10, tho..

Nhex, Sunday, 17 July 2011 00:11 (twelve years ago) link

Trials is like my favorite game ever

Looks amazing.

Yeah disappointed about this, I'd been really looking forward to it and it's only when I went to buy it from the psn store today that I realised it's an MS exclusive.

Course Limbo ended up being bundled and/or given away so often that I think I own it on every platform at this stage. So it probably makes sense to just wait until the same starts happening with this.

JimD, Tuesday, 28 June 2016 23:36 (seven years ago) link

this is definitely coming to PS4, its just debuting on xbox first. incredible reviews so far.

jamiesummerz, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 11:19 (seven years ago) link

cool

am0n, Wednesday, 29 June 2016 17:16 (seven years ago) link

FUCK, this game is amazing. I haven't finished it yet, probably an hour or so from finishing as I already put in a few hours yesterday. So far the puzzles aren't as complicated as Limbo, but a few of the puzzles took me multiple tries (or deaths) to figure out. The world is so beautifully realized, more so than Limbo. And Playdead really knows how to utilize ambient music at just the right moments to convey epic/creepy moments.

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Tuesday, 5 July 2016 23:53 (seven years ago) link

It's pretty bleak. Strong echoes of City 17, minus alyx, dog, or any companionship, plus getting to watch a small boy die in a hundred different gruesome ways.

Ha, are you referring to the ending? Not sure how I feel about that yet. It was moving, not sure what I thought about it yet?

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Sunday, 31 July 2016 02:45 (seven years ago) link

I feel like being a petulant child and refusing to breathe until this comes out for mac.

emil.y, Sunday, 31 July 2016 11:21 (seven years ago) link

It ain't worth it. I mean yeah it's kinda worth it for the looks, especially if you're into the grim and macabre. It's almost worth it just for the wtf ending. But it's so easy, almost to the point of being little more than a walking simulator. Don't think I was taxed by a single puzzle for more than two minutes. By contrast Another World, which this really reminded me of, and I decided to play through after discovering it was available for ipad, flummoxed me into cheating despite having completed it probably three times before.

Out on PS4 on 8/23. :)))

three weeks pass...

Started playing this last night and I'm so glad this is basically Limbo with some twists, will be sad when it's over (which will probably be tonight, because judging from the little checkpoint dots on the load screen it seems pretty short).

sam jax sax jam (Jordan), Friday, 26 August 2016 17:46 (seven years ago) link

feel a little guilty about it but thats kinda why i might wait for a sale

Nhex, Friday, 26 August 2016 17:55 (seven years ago) link

basically Limbo with some twists

the twists are pretty great though

Cocoon (new game from some of the developers who made Limbo/Inside, as I understand it) a great little puzzler so far. My wife loves it, the true sign of success for one of these games. It's pretty brilliant how it introduces and iterates on each mechanic without any text or dialogue. It does seem like it will be pretty short though, we played for 2 hours last night and it says we're already at 44%.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 2 October 2023 17:06 (six months ago) link

Amazing. Loved Inside. Limbo was great but a bit too hard for me. I hope they continue the tradition for unexpected game endings.

Chuck_Tatum, Thursday, 5 October 2023 11:46 (six months ago) link

one month passes...

Some of the boss fights in this game have such great gimmicks that I don't want to beat them too fast, like the one where you have a mirror image that moves with you but in reverse, and you can teleport to its position. That could be a whole game in itself.

Jordan s/t (Jordan), Monday, 13 November 2023 15:14 (five months ago) link

You talking Cocoon?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 13 November 2023 15:34 (five months ago) link

Yeah

Cocoon is incredible on a loud sound system btw. Extremely immersive and amazing sub bass
