greenmoney ep was pretty middling i thought - 'suh mi stay' is fun but eisegete axis struggling with the flava once again otherwise

are post-dropoff south rakkas crew not still signed to fools gold btw? their time now surely

Lex the passive aggression is misplaced - the fact that you don't like to listen to radio sets doesn't mean we don't listen to anything else.

This set looks great - will download. And yeah "Fuller" is massive, total ravey madness chaos (wrote "madness" w/o even realising r|t|c had just said the same).

BTW that "Call Me" remix is on Roska's 100% Roska productions special for Rinse from September last year. I should up it as it's basically the only Roska set one really needs. The remix is awes, has a fantastic "Pump Up The Jam"-but-ridiculously-stop-start-syncopated feel to it.

Dunno if I ever mentioned this short Undisputed BBC 1xtra special mix earlier in the year:

http://www.sendspace.com/file/ryrk21

Anyway, it's lots of fun, if you don't mind hearing several different iterations of "Sunglasses" (which I certainly don't). Really teases out the bassline influence on funky, lots of slithery slimy but metallic synth sounds and bassline-ish MC-tracks.

Yes! The "Call Me" remix handily demonstrates this.

Okay will try to do this soon. It kinda is too much roska, but it's a handy resource.

Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 13:17 (thirteen years ago) link

roska reminds me a lot of terror danjah.

i wish terror would make some funky, i dont get why he hasnt and why hes made a couple of bloody dubstep tracks instead.

Because he's a goth.

r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 13:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Can sort of see that at Roska's more madcap end ("Hey Cutie" say, or his remix of Borish Duglosh's "Bangkok") but Terror Danjah has a more squiggly multicoloured quality mostly I reckon. I'd put forward Funkystepz's "Hurricane Riddim" and "Bubbly" and "Rude Girl" and (coincidentally) "Fuller" if I was trying to think of Terror-ish funky tracks.

Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 13:53 (thirteen years ago) link

r|t|c that richie dan track is brilliant! Should not be remotely surprised though, if anyone's career deserved a funky-derived revival...

Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 13:57 (thirteen years ago) link

what is this squiggly multicoloured quality people always talk about with terror (and its influence on joker, gemmy and co)? i must have missed it. the roska comparison is based on terror tracks like green street or cock back. ultra ultra sparse, even similar drum sounds, and not much variation between tracks. all very similar but just slightly different under the surface each time (which is kinda what i love about both of them).

I'm thinking of stuff like "boogeyman", "one wish", all those goblin-ghosty keyboards he used/uses all the time. "Cock Back" is definitely Terra at his most spartan, so I can see the Roska comparison making sense in that regard.

Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 14:17 (thirteen years ago) link

boogeyman isnt really 'colorful' though is it? it is a tiny bit wonky i suppose but the synths (which are a tiny bit wonky i suppose) are in the background. terror was always more of a percussive producer IMO rather than one with an overt melodic sensibility in his work in the way someone like joker is.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 9 July 2010 14:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah but I'm not comparing him to Joker, Joker takes all that a lot further obv.

Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 14:24 (thirteen years ago) link

didnt say you - i think people have just gone along with that theory since reynolds said it.

what other devine collective tunes are worth checking/out there except for house girls btw? seems amazing to think that they play so many tracks on the radio but there are so few you can get.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 9 July 2010 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

^ see what i'm saying about this guy being a peerless wind up merchant

r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 14:35 (thirteen years ago) link

er who/how am i winding anyone up exactly?

at least im not wilfully dense and purposelessly verbose.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 9 July 2010 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Titchy see also "Poltergeist (Remix)" and "So Contagious" for two pretty colourful tunes. The diff. with Terror I guess is he'll then pull the layers back to just bass and beats for a while.

Re Devine Collective:

Tribal Conga - You'd probably know this one, it's on Marcus' Rinse CD (though weirdly uncredited, mixed in with "Wonderful Day").
Tribal Daydream - Eerie menacing tune with a guy talkin' about love, peace and unity like he's gonna impose them on you by force.
People Keep Dancing - really humid vocal tune, absolutely gorgeous groove.
Touch Her In The Morning - stark, martial string-slashing tune.
Eyes On You - liberally samples Tim Deluxe's "It Just Won't Do.
Thriller Refix - self-explanatory.

Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 14:42 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm pretty used to titchy now even when he says totally face-slapping things like Teedra only has one decent tune.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Friday, 9 July 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Not sure about the sudden shift into funky schaffel midway through that Scratcha DVA mix, this doesn't really seem like a fruitful direction to be going in. The first half of the whole mix is a bit too I Am Serious Funky for my liking and in weather like this any funky mix should be sounding amazing.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 July 2010 17:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Surely that funky-schaffel track is intended to be a quasi-comedic genre-splicing exercise. It's Bok Bok yeah? Don't worry I don't think this is going to be a "thing" in funky any time soon.

The Cooly G track that starts the mix is fab I think. "Rising Sun" (by Tadow Productions not Fingaprint ftr) is the most amazing track ever with the right MCs (my fave will always be Shantie and Rankin' going head to head over it about two years ago) but always sounds incomplete when played as an instrumental. After that I'm not into anything really aside from "Fuller" and "I'm So Fly" and "I Feel". DVA sure does has a taste for lugubriousness these days. I wonder if he'll bust out anything as carefree and light as "Hard House" from now on.

LOL that my favourite thing on the Lil Silva's (excellent) Fact mix 'pon first listen is Fedde Le Grand's "Oh Yeah" - and it turns out to be titchy's too!

Tim F, Saturday, 10 July 2010 00:46 (thirteen years ago) link

Okay, so I know it's over a year old now, but can we talk about how amazing Aphrodisiax's "Unfinished Business" EP is?

There's so much feeling of momentum on these tracks, and those delirious counter rhythms on the title track...the cheesy dubby horns on Keep it Moving. And the spoken word house gospel stuff on My Getaway. I'm always a sucker for that.

Pretty sure the guy doing the vocal bit on My Getaway is the same one from Grand High Priest's My Guitar, too.

I found that Aphrodisiax single at Grammaphone in Chicago and it made my day.

Why isn't all house music desperately imitating Aphrodisiax right now? Instead of MCDE?

initiate slut mode (Siah Alan), Saturday, 10 July 2010 05:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Because interesting rhythms in house are now thought of as a bit naff. Also in a lot of ways the rise of post-dubstep as the dance-connoisseur's experimental after dinner mint of choice has meant that the main course has grown more inward-focused by comparison.

Tim F, Saturday, 10 July 2010 06:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Well, South African House and Funky are certainly grounds for some optimism.

That trip to Chicago did not leave me feeling like House is in roaring health otherwise.

Yeah I'm also a bit disappointed by that Greenmoney record. Love love love his remixes and that Serocee track is great but the rest of it is too 'dirty basement' and not 'riotous street party' enough for me. Lady Chann only works in one gear and the track isn't quite ferocious enough for her and Ms Bratt's awful sub-Tinchy monotone shouldn't be allowed anywhere near anything - she raps like she's reading an autocue.

Matt DC, Saturday, 10 July 2010 12:15 (thirteen years ago) link

XP Some club downtown, I've been to the Smartbar before.

DJ played a bunch of 90s house and then switched to some not so great club rap.

I couldn't find anything going on that weekend except the Martinez Brothers.
