Da Art of Storytellin' Part II should get more love. like the distorted vocals, the gloomy beat, and the monk-like chant between verses or whatever that is.

kinda wish i voted y'all scared now. andre kills it.

Surprised Ya'll Scared didn't get a single vote, it was an early fave from this album.
Not surprised about Mamacita, I must be one of the only people who doesn't see this track as a low point.
Wanted to say that by revisiting this album, I was surprised how effective Slump is. It's so difficult to say where the strongest part of the album is, could be anywhere (even the last tracks apparently for some).

Nabozo, Thursday, 24 August 2017 10:57 (six years ago) link

i always used to hate mamacita but somehow it eventually became like an old friend

j., Thursday, 24 August 2017 16:17 (six years ago) link

shocked by the lack of support for slump, but i guess there are so many great tracks on Aquemini that it can fall through the cracks

wait how did I only just now notice that Andre's mention of "Set It Off" in "Spottieottiedopalicious' is accompanied by a "Set It Off" woodblock?

Agreed. Amazing to think this was the same group that made "Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik" only four years earlier.

Was driving a few guys home from basketball open gym a couple years ago and "spottie" came on. They listen exclusively to contemporary hip hop. They all made fun of the song, "wtf is this???" etc. It was then that I realized civilization was doomed.

What about the song would strike contemporary hip-hop fans as ridiculous?

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 6 October 2021 16:18 (two years ago) link

its overall quality.

"wtf is this" is a fair reaction, but it should be followed up by a "play it again, tho" naturally

thank you all for reminding me to play this incredible album again. i feel like i know every note. except somehow i’d forgotten the harmonica in rosa parks??! anyway massive proustian rush of living on 4th ave in brooklyn. weird i didn’t vote in this but i never vote in polls so maybe not weird. very few votes on this poll in general. impossible to choose. art of storytellin 1 is so good. but it all is good

I think everything Young Thug knows about Andre 3000 comes from that Key and Peele sketch.

In 2010 I used to have this problem with our radio station students and early Jay-Z, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep. The most old school hip-hop agnostic was a Lupe fan lol.

Later in the decade Kanye before 808s got wiped.

sry- that's the track "everlasting" which appeared on the
nothing to lose soundtrack
from summer 1997. i have no idea if it was an early aquemini demo or an atliens leftover.

what i do know is that it completely smashes everything.

Do they have a lot of extra tracks laying around on b-sides/soundtracks? I never poked around outside of the albums.

Cow_Art, Monday, 9 January 2023 03:29 (one year ago) link

not a lot lot, but enough to supplement a solid mixtape-

"benz or beamer"
"phobia"
"everlasting"
"in due time"
"high schoolin"
"sole sunday"
"speedballin"
"land of a million drums"

"in due time" is also one of their best; it was pulled off aquemini last minute for whatever reason.

plus post breakup trax like "royal flush," "lookin 4 ya," "pink matter" (remix), etc.

and "the whole world," duh

sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 January 2023 04:33 (one year ago) link

why not throw "black ice" and "intl players anthem" on there too

sault bae (voodoo chili), Monday, 9 January 2023 04:34 (one year ago) link

oh i was just sticking to soundtrack cuts. they never really had any proper b-sides. but i mean yeah: all that stuff is 100% worth your time.

goats gonna goat.

outkast's guest cuts, soundtracks, b-sides, etc equal maybe their fourth best album

Really wish they'd put out a compilation scooping up all of that stuff. It's not like they've released anything in the past decade and a half - not even a deluxe reissue.
