"Kick Push" has just come out over here - achieving the astonishing feat of making me temporarily enthusiastic about the notion of a "golden age" hip hop revival. At least while it's playing, anyway.
-Tim Finney

Call me nostalgic for Native Tongues-style funkiness, but I bought "Kick Push" from iTunes after only very, very randomly catching the video (once) on TV. A lot of so-called backpacker business forgets to engage the "fun" button, but this doesn't.

I think Silent Shout sounds impressive right away, but it doesn't sound really good until after you get to know it.

its the most dramatic track, the most immediate, the most punchy drum wise (meatier) its everything a single ought to be... all the breaths as percussion almost R'n'B allusions, the subtle palm muted rock instrumentation running along with the synth arpeggio... the lyric is a load of nothing, true but it still works brilliantly as some kind of re-imagined 80s pop that actually sounds nothing like anything made in the 80s... a simulacrum that's actually completely contemporaneous...

i just saw the promiscuous boy video and nelly furtado amazingly looks SEXY in it! i really like the song, neither timbaland nor nelly seem like promiscuous ppl at all, theyre both kind of nerdy and i like them. i have no idea why theyre pretending to be promiscous! is it to downplay the intensity of their attraction?! it is a song worth talking about you dull/bitter clowns - fuck you and your jaded vaudeville act!
...
i shd add that i really like how promiscuous girl keeps the slightly mystical 'world music' rocks & hills vibe of that annoying worthy album that nelly did last time, just enough that it sez 'THIS IS NELLY' but leaves out 'and check out how wholesome i am', and then those synths in the chorus are so melancholy, its so much more of a love song than a promiscuity song.

damn that cover is UGLY... great song though

groovemaaan, Friday, 11 May 2007 23:06 (sixteen years ago) link

only one #1!!! screw 'ridin'(on my worst list thx to my gym's broken record of a PA system) this was the crime of the century. Promiscuous is the best single of the last two years at least.

I'm done with this list. MUSICALLY! you've been great, hurry up.

If the rest of the Lily Allen tracks lived up to "LDN" I'd be her #1 fan. "Smile" was great the first time and tarnished fast, but "LDN" will be stuck in my head when I'm forty and I won't mind a bit. The "Steal My Sunshine" of 2006.

2. T.I. - What You Know
(172.5, 12 votes, 1 number one)

via Youtube

http://i192.photobucket.com/albums/z56/ilx2006poll/whatyouknow.jpg

It's all about the rise and fall of that mammoth synth riff, swaggering lazily along and steamrolling everything in its path without even trying; the rise and fall of TI's unmistakeable flow, those irresistible Georgia inflections alternately tough, amused, silly, deadly serious, and at every point just too damn good to bother with such minor concerns as pausing to breathe; the rise and fall of your feet in time to the beat, convinced for four minutes that they're the feet of a king who owns the whole neighbourhood, just as the supreme 'What You Know' owned 2006. So confidence-instilling that it should be prescribed to neurotics, this is the sound of total triumph.

;_;

"What You Know" was totally my #2 though.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 02:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Im so f'in sick of that Gnarls Barkley song.

Trayce, Saturday, 12 May 2007 03:08 (sixteen years ago) link

Search: musically
Destroy: the voters

I mean, seriously - "Crazy"? I realize that in a poll like this you're torn between rating a song based on its initial impact and rating it based on a few months of hindsight, but I tend towards the "hindsight" camp myself and in hindsight "Crazy" is really annoying and thin. Actually, wait. I thought that in the first place. I thought it was overplayed the second time I heard it at the disco, but even on the twentieth such occasion there were throngs of people gleefully exclaiming when they heard that familiar repetitious whomp. I don't really know what else to compare the thing to except some malodorous cross between "Flat Beat" and "Connected" except with a guy doing some sort of keening-mewling atonal crap on top. GUYS. THIS SONG IS ANNOYING. AUGH.

^ OTM

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 03:44 (sixteen years ago) link

the chorus goes absolutely nowhere.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 03:45 (sixteen years ago) link

"Crazy" is great, however much people may be sick of it.

Rockist Scientist, Saturday, 12 May 2007 03:52 (sixteen years ago) link

47. Lil Wayne feat. Robin Thicke - Shooter
(40 points, 2 votes, 2 number ones)

I think it is significant that "Shooter" wins in the enthusiasm/passion stakes - average points = perfect 20. And it placed pretty low because not many people had heard of it.

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, shocking that "Maneater," "SOS," "Pull Shapes" and Escort's "Starlight" are missing from here.

Disappointing that other than the Ahmad Fathi wtf, there are no non-English language tracks. Calle 13 people! You all should go and seek out Snook.

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:35 (sixteen years ago) link

Also, The Reverend: I heart you for voting for "Get Me Bodied"

danzig, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:38 (sixteen years ago) link

watching the video for "Shooter" - I remember seeing this on MTVU, I'd forgotten about it. The little tinkly electric piano part is great, but I'm not sure I'd rank this song.

Curt1s Stephens, Saturday, 12 May 2007 04:49 (sixteen years ago) link

"crazy" is insipid.

lfam, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:11 (sixteen years ago) link

I wonder if my first place vote would have gotten "Mac 10 Handle" into the top-50

milo z, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:12 (sixteen years ago) link

but i didn't vote

lfam, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:13 (sixteen years ago) link

"Shooter" is different, I guess.

Could Wayne not get the real JT to guest on his track or something?

milo z, Saturday, 12 May 2007 05:14 (sixteen years ago) link

i heard crazy way after all the 'omg crazy' nonsense so i'll give it the benefit of the doubt and consider it 'tainted'. i don't think it would have cracked my top 25 in any case.
