uh those pics are a little more in-depth than a 'coke nose' or a five-year-old-like scrawl of 'fug' no? but whatever, art is in the eye of etc

I don't know why he started doing that. Maybe afraid someone would steal his stolen pics?

not what i was saying, rather that the jackin' poll pics are "interpretive ms paints." let's also not pretend like ms paint is plagiarism here (there are many worse things about perez hilton than his crude paints).

and anyway, the issue for me is not that it's perez (not wholly, at least). i'd take just as much offense to the dude from stereogum being on the cover of urb while biting the collar of win butler.

Jordan Sargent, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:20 (sixteen years ago) link

nath, that's exactly why.

maura, Friday, 27 July 2007 12:26 (sixteen years ago) link

Holy shit you guys recognizing Perez from that photo.

How many gay men have you met?

Ms Misery, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah those gay men must repent their misogynist ways!

The Reverend, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:21 (sixteen years ago) link

you guys, it was beth that said it, not me.

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:27 (sixteen years ago) link

lolz how many gay men have i met? i dunno but i do live around the corner from dr. morbius's fave gay bar.

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 15:29 (sixteen years ago) link

i'm getting sick of beth ditto. at this point i find it more an annoying schtick than a meaningful message.

and i really don't need to say anybody naked that much.

Surmounter, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:26 (sixteen years ago) link

i thought gay men hated women?

no no no, they hate LESBIANS

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:27 (sixteen years ago) link

"If there's anyone to blame for size zero, it's not women. Blame gay men who work in the fashion industry and want these women as dolls.

"Men don't know what it feels like to be a woman and be expected to look a particular way. The Beckhams are part of the machine, Paris Hilton is part of the machine.

"There's that thing Paris Hilton said about Lindsay Lohan, 'You're poor, ugly and fat.' It's always women who are victims."

"I spent one night talking to Kate Moss and she said the most amazing things about bodies. I didn't think I was going to like her, but she said, 'Do you know what I hate, Beth? When people tell my big girlfriends, 'You have a beautiful face…' That's a really radical concept."

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I've never met Beth but the other two Gossip-ers were nice enough

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:37 (sixteen years ago) link

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:39 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah, that stuff? pisses me off. everyone's part of the fucking machine, huh? fags, socialites, the Beckhams. what if Posh said to the Press one day "dammit i just love my big girlfriends, they're beautiful," would she be BFF with her then?

ugh, what does she even think the machine is? image? so underthought.

brains go well with the Me Against The Machine play.

i'm not sure why this is getting me riled up.

Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:45 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't tell if she uses 'radical' to mean 'totally awesome and gnarly' or 'scarily extremist and revolting'. she's wrong either way.

Mr. Que, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:50 (sixteen years ago) link

I have a feeling she means radical like "an amazing new concept". Kate is such a pioneer.

I know, right?, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:51 (sixteen years ago) link

She really is. She pioneered anorexia, then she pioneered druglove, and now big girls.

Surmounter, Friday, 27 July 2007 17:54 (sixteen years ago) link

que u mite b rite

The beard at Otto's table said, -- Is that Hemingway? Ed Feasley looked over at the Big Unshaven Man, who had just said, -- No queer in history ever produced great art. Feasley looked vague, but said -- There's something familiar about him...

-- I tell you, there's a queer conspiracy to dominate everything. Just look around, the boy with the red hunting cap said. -- Queers dominate writing, they dominate the theater, they dominate art. Just try to find a gallery where you can show your pictures if you're not a queer, he added, raising a cigarette between paint-encrusted fingers. -- What do you think women look so damned foolish for today? It's because queers design their clothes, queers dictate women's fashions, queers do their hair, queers do all the photography in the fashion magazines. They're purposely making women look more and more idiotic until nobody will want to go to bed with one. It's a conspiracy.

Mr. Que, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:02 (sixteen years ago) link

thanks for pointing it out, it's been some years since i read it so it was nice to crack it open just now. that book is a beautiful compendium of every stupid thing ever said in new york, from then until the end of time (since people keep saying stupid things). it's so good.

hstencil, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:04 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah it sure is, maybe i'll finish it this time!

Mr. Que, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:06 (sixteen years ago) link

i can't tell if she uses 'radical' to mean 'totally awesome and gnarly' or 'scarily extremist and revolting'. she's wrong either way.

Beth confirms she's like, radical but not toooo radical:

"I would never lose weight. I would never wear anything I didn’t want to wear, and that’s a really radical statement as a woman in the mainstream music industry. In a way, I almost think girls and women need a voice, and I think Gossip is a pretty cool voice. It’s not as radical as Bikini Kill was in the ‘90s, or riot grrrl was in the ‘90s—that really aggressive, super-macho hardcore punk scene had never seen anything like that before. It’s not as radical as that, but you’re not preaching to the choir anymore when you’re selling records in Barnes and Noble."

Steven Wells wrote a good article about the politics of pie-eating:

"This could be the start of a revolution. Maybe Dove and Slim-Fast and Heat, by hitching their flimsy fashion wagons to the stout carthorse of anti-anorexia, have inadvertently started an unstoppable wave of gorgeous gigantism. Maybe football fans will start chanting, "Who ate all the tape-worms?" Maybe six months from now, formerly skeletal Kensington grand dames will have their personal trainers force foie gras down their throats with tubes and plungers, in the meantime hiring thin women as social companions, so they'll look fatter by comparison in the photos in Harpers and Vogue.

Or could it be just a flash in the chip pan? When interviewers congratulated John Goodman for his smooth dancing moves in the movie King Ralph, he snarled back "Yeah, for a fat guy, right?" Because that could be all we're doing. Stopping in the street and tossing 50p pieces in the hat of the dancing fattie. Not because he's a particularly good dancer, but because he's so damn fat. And when the XXL radical-chic freak show's over, we'll go back to recruiting hordes of hungry boy-women and angsting about the size of our arses.

It could go either way. The world is agog. In the refugee camps of northern Sudan they talk of little else."

everything, Friday, 27 July 2007 18:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I would say dudes are progressing at the same rates as other men, so some of the old maxims don't necessarily apply to today's gay.

this actually happened, ppl.

Perez Hilton isn’t just a celebrity blogger. He’s a serious cultural force. Love him or hate him, at 7 million clicks a day, his infiltration into people’s daily lives is something most media outlets would die for. And more impressive is the fact that he does it all from a Wi-Fi connection in a West Hollywood coffee shop. Perez’s bread and butter might be the glossy celebs that get stripped bare on his sometimes scathing, occasionally sweet and always amusing site. But his championing of underdogs such as Beth Ditto stems from a true support for the underground and a kinship for “loud, obnoxious and openly gay” individuals, like the blogger himself.

New EP is AMAZING. Plush Chicago House throwback a la Azari & III. Beth sounding restrained but glamorous. Sound design is scrupulous - if you told me "Good Night Good Morning" was a lost Fingers Inc. track I'd believe you.

"Do You Need Someone" esp. is U&K.
