jay dee's not very weird trife!

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:35 (twenty years ago) link

madlib on the other hand is a lil weird, which is why i like him.

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

the jaylib project is surprisingly good and plays to both their strengths.

rob geary (rgeary), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:36 (twenty years ago) link

I loved the beats on Welcome to Detroit. I don't know how you could call it lazy--actually a lot more intricate then the majority of hip hop.

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 04:48 (twenty years ago) link

ive heard two jaylib songs and liked them both, la la la and whatever that smooth piano one abt handjobs in the hallway

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:12 (twenty years ago) link

wait haha those are madlib/mf doom i think, ok i havent heard jaylib then

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:29 (twenty years ago) link

jay dee s/d

s: brand new heavies f q tip - sometimes!! the slum village daft punk remix!!

d: i dunno

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:31 (twenty years ago) link

ok actually ive really never paid him enough attention to notice what he produced but i like how he does the underground/mainstream thing, and i have a tangible sound associated with him in my head, this kind of sunny electronic funk lick like the last few de la albums, unfortunately he rarely actually makes good beats that sound like that

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:33 (twenty years ago) link

I've only heard like two tracks of each, but I liked Madvillian more than Jaylib.
Have you heard Welcome to Detroit, trife?
My favorite Jay Dee moment is on the throw-away beat that comes after "Go Ladies", where The Clap functions as a snare and a hi hat.

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:41 (twenty years ago) link

is that the bbe instrumentals thing? i havent bcz i usually hate instrumental hiphop though i did hear jazzy jeffs and it was alright, wouldve been better if the cover had him getting thrown out the door by uncle phil

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:47 (twenty years ago) link

haha. It's only half-instrumental. Probably less than half, actually.

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 05:55 (twenty years ago) link

most of the instrumental tracks are live instrument shit. he does an Earth wind & Fire track, a donald byrd track (the beautiful 'Think Twice'), a kraftwerk tribute (Big Booty Express)

one of my favorite tracks of his is on there, "Pause" by Frank-n-Dank.

that Jazzy Jeff BBE album is wonderful too.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 06:03 (twenty years ago) link

but the 'live' stuff doesn't sound live--Jay Dee's production stamp is still all over it, esp how the drums and bass sound

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 06:10 (twenty years ago) link

trife, i just downloaded a few obie trice tracks. i know how hard you're feeling this, so i'd suggest tracking down the Frank-n-Dank album "48 Hrs". it's a totally janky cdr type shit (no cd art and a blurry-photo one sided cover), but it's kinda in the same dark synthy territory as "Adrenaline Rush"

here's a clip from the BBE album with them on it Pause

here's a very typical type production of his also from the BBE album. slow, lazy sounding (but completely methodical) beat. heavy off beat bass programming and some really nice airy, filtered, jazzy samples on top Come Get It

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 07:42 (twenty years ago) link

Jay Dee seems to have got a little lazy lately, I s'pose it all comes down to whether you want a producer to hone their style and put up a little richness. Plus his choice of MCs is tired. I like his remixes a lot tho' - busta, de la, masta ace, even Das Efigitty.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:04 (twenty years ago) link

sorry, OR put up a little richness.

nebbesh (nebbesh), Friday, 19 September 2003 08:05 (twenty years ago) link

if you could hear this CDR i have of his beats, you'd totally take back what you said about him getting lazy. it's 50 of his beats, each track is about a minute long. shit is very, very experimental and out there, but still retaining his trademark touches.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:41 (twenty years ago) link

and his remix of Masta Ace's "Sittin on Chrome" is really weird. it went from an acidy synth bass track to a jazzy beat with no real key center.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

ok i dont know how i missed this above but youre crazy, beats rhymes and life isnt boring, its the best tribe album!!!

trife (simon_tr), Friday, 19 September 2003 17:43 (twenty years ago) link

ok, i'll relisten.

i actually never listened to it until recently (and i think i've only listened to it 1.5 times). i've always been a huge tribe fan, but was told how awful those last two albums were, so i avoided them for how many years now?

i guess the first 3 just have a real hold on my heart being that i listened to them every day in highschool. i still have that native tongue 94-96 is the "golden age" mentality.

it wasn't until i found this site that i ventured out of the underground/concious = good, commercial = bad mindset. man, you and jess have totally warped my mind. one of my friends kept going on and on about the new Murs album so i listened to it yesterday, and i can't believe it, but that kinda shit just doesn't tickle my inner ear anymore.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:14 (twenty years ago) link

After hearing that MURS album get a lot of praise, buying it, then not liking it much, I've kinda given up on 'underground' stuff.

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 18:59 (twenty years ago) link

i think the tracks with el-p are pretty good, but the rest of the beats are pretty bad. and he totally sounds like Aceyalone. and he's pretty nerdy rapping about masturbation and a whole song about skateboarding? i mean i guess not every song should be about bang bang shoot em up smoke a blunt and drinking hennesey, but that skateboarding song was dumb

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:08 (twenty years ago) link

I totally agree.

oops (Oops), Friday, 19 September 2003 19:22 (twenty years ago) link

I'd also like to commend to Jay Dee's choice in MC's at times. The rapping on Fantastic Vol. 2 is one of the best examples of rapping that enhances the beat. They are entertaining. The way they stutter and fuck with their voices and such. Didn't like the album without Jay Dee either. Go figure.

Johnny Badlees (crispssssss), Friday, 19 September 2003 20:19 (twenty years ago) link

i haven't heard Trinity yet, but i picked up Dirty District (the detroit slum affiliated compilation under the slum name). T3 is a pretty good producer in his own right. it's a lot dirtier, almost 4track sounding, but it's got the same off beat thump that jay dee is known for. the mcs are just ok on it though. kinda gets into a little undie territory sometimes. i think if i see Trinity used cheap i'd pick it up.

JasonD (JasonD), Friday, 19 September 2003 21:12 (twenty years ago) link

five months pass...
i just want to say jaydilla is the sh*t. i'm from west side of detroit and everybody on my block diggs his style. he's the best producer to me but people r sleeping on him. but i want to know if anybody knows of all his productions and were i can get them cause i'm trying to get them all even the stuff he did lil indian boy.

Spacek - Dollar 12" single 2005 (Sound in Color)

I've only just heard this (was No.2 in Gilles Peterson listeners poll). Love it.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 2 January 2006 12:01 (eighteen years ago) link

this guy is so overrated on the underground... he used to be good but too much of his stuff is sleepy time hip hop

that Spacek album
is so atmospheric that
it barely exists

$#@!!!, Monday, 2 January 2006 20:59 (eighteen years ago) link

The first post mentions q-tips solo album. did it leak somehow?

his solo album is called The Abstract. it's a pretty jiggy hip hop album (but really, really great). i'd rather listen to that now than any tribe called quest albums. the album you're thinking about is Kamaal, his rock album. they released an promo ep on vinyl with like 5 tracks that i have that's pretty good - although everyone HATES it. you might be able to buy it on gemm

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 2 January 2006 22:06 (eighteen years ago) link

sorry, the album that was released is called Amplified, not the abstract

jaxon (jaxon), Monday, 2 January 2006 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

dilla is kinda effervescent

okok, Monday, 2 January 2006 22:18 (eighteen years ago) link

i wouldn't exactly call Amplified "jiggy," i mean it's not p.diddy or swizz beats or anything. "Go Hard" and "Let's Ride" are a couple of my favorite Dilla beats.

right now i cant get enough of Frank N Dank's 48 Hours. When the track "Pimp Strut" screws down halfway through?? Whoa!

one time gaffled 'em up (one time gaffled 'em up), Monday, 2 January 2006 22:36 (eighteen years ago) link

Donuts is so, so lush. Like what Madlib did with the blunted in the bomb shelter mix, only Dilla's sampling and blending together a blizzard of soul and funk stuff. Only listened to it once, and its a bit of a head trip - and 30+ tracks of 1-2 minute doodles, with no sample info or anything - but i am itching to play it again.

track 20 is built around the same wah-wah meltdown that Edan uses for the second half of 'science of the two'.

weird about Donuts. i've got a couple of cdrs of his beats, and the last one was all soul samples and wierdness. i wonder if that's what's gonna make up this new one?

the press release says that its very much in the vein of those instrumentals bootlegs and cdrs.

from what i'm told, only a couple of tracks on Donuts have been heard before. the whole thing is pretty good, although i was hoping for some more of his weird synth beats.

My lord. Are people still saying "jiggy" in 2006? Ugh.

Anyway, I completely agree with the sentiments of the post about "sleepy-time hiphop". 99% of everything Dilla's done is teh boredom inducer. I've never understood why people love this guy so much.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 February 2008 09:53 (sixteen years ago) link

very overrated guy, despite his good productions. i think he could have done with some better engineering at times too. and it wouldnt hurt to produce stuff in tandem with the mc rather than just sending beat tapes and leaving it at that.

titchyschneiderMk2, Thursday, 28 February 2008 13:30 (sixteen years ago) link

better engineering? come on man, who cares? i dont personally see where his engineering was lacking (his bass is some of the best in hiphop, and the way his beats hit is ridiculous) but even if it wasnt perfect, who cares? if that is what you hear when you listen to his music, you have missed the point entirely.

pipecock, Thursday, 28 February 2008 13:40 (sixteen years ago) link

his engineering was fine. i love the sound mixing on 'the shining' in particular. only titchyschneider could really make me agree with pipecock on a dilla thread

deej, Thursday, 28 February 2008 16:59 (sixteen years ago) link

lol

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Thursday, 28 February 2008 19:38 (sixteen years ago) link

a fair amount of his beats sound a bit 'dull' sonically. like theyre just dull thuds, not much 'body' or life to them. partly this is his style of course, but it also just seems like shoddy engineering to me. am thinking of some of the beats on t he guilty simpson album in particular. the fact deej doesnt agree only makes me more decided.

titchyschneiderMk2, Friday, 29 February 2008 10:59 (sixteen years ago) link

one month passes...

did anyone read the feature on dilla in the wire this month? i couldn't get a copy of it. apparently the interviewed guilty simpson! so excited to read that.

davie, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:37 (sixteen years ago) link

you probably wouldn't want to read their review of 'ode to the ghetto' then. quote: "guilty simpson is not a good rapper"

Anyone have a copy of that jay dee greatest hits mix that was up around here a while ago?

The Okay Playa thing? Yeah I can send it to you.

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Hi! I don't know if that was it, but it had Stakes Is High on it.

admrl, Friday, 18 April 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

that is such bullshit. guilty simpson is a fucking genius.

davie, Friday, 18 April 2008 20:05 (sixteen years ago) link

who wrote the review? do they still have hua hsu doing them? usually he's on point

deej, Friday, 18 April 2008 20:48 (sixteen years ago) link

The Dilla piece is by Stelfox. I don't recall the Guilty Simpson review, but I don't think Hua Hsu is the main hip hop guy anymore (I think it might be. . . wait for it. . . Nick Sylvester.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 April 2008 21:08 (sixteen years ago) link

"Hi! I don't know if that was it, but it had Stakes Is High on it."

That's not it, I don't think (the Okay Playa is mostly blends of Donuts tracks IIRC.)

Alex in SF, Friday, 18 April 2008 21:12 (sixteen years ago) link

yup, nick syvester wrote that review: apparently guilty "reaches myspace levels of lyrical inanity on the title track..."

Has anyone tried the "Jay Loves Japan" thing now it's finally out?

Telephone thing, Saturday, 19 April 2008 06:43 (sixteen years ago) link

yeah dude. it is not his most consistent release, but some of the tracks bang. i would say it is worth it for "say it!" and "first time," but i'm a pretty huge dillaphile so i don't know if that is a good recommendation.
