pon reflection i don't think i would extended the rollers term as far as tim's done - which isn't to say the tracks he's picked don't ever roll per se but only that bona fide rollers ought (imo) to be those tracks that seem to exalt in their own pure rollage - there should be a kinda compulsive/meditative tunnel vision vibe to them, unperturbed by any jacking or stabbing or grooving or moshing or whatever. (chief recent example beyond the lr grooves - hardhouse banton's 'colonel', which never fails to bring to mind a runaway minecart on an underground railroad or something).
i won't lie that i'm also just trying to give a swerve to the unrewarding-feeling leaden dnb baggage of the term. perhaps the distinction should be... "tracky"?
― r|t|c, Friday, 25 June 2010 17:41 (thirteen years ago) link
in other news (that people probably already know) maxsin the other week said there's a funkystepz ep coming out soon with 'malibu', 'leave with you', 'trinity hill', and maybe a tune called 'sweet love' on it.
also the video to the donaeo's out but the track sounds too slow on it to do much out-of-context damage imo - like, you're not supposed to have enough time to think about it.

ugh this new marcus set (30/6) is AAAAARD
http://relay.exequo.org/rinsefm/podcast/MarcusNasty300610.mp3
not too much vocals - just 2hrs of pure tribal madness mixxed tight as a drum
― r|t|c, Saturday, 3 July 2010 09:16 (thirteen years ago) link
honestly its a shame i'm idealogically opposed to putting radio sets etc on album end of year lists and lolz never do them anyway cos this set would go str8 to the t-o-p, serious
― r|t|c, Saturday, 3 July 2010 09:27 (thirteen years ago) link
This set is awesome. I don't know if I've ever heard Marcus mix so quickly from one track to the next again and again and again. Some of the blends are inspired, e.g. Drew Austin's Drake remix into "Inflation".
― Tim F, Monday, 5 July 2010 23:23 (thirteen years ago) link
BTW, I was able to ID the first track from the June 9 Marcus Nasty set.. it's "It's What You Do" by the Fives: http://soundcloud.com/the-fives/its-what-you-do

ALSO Donae'o's "So Fly" ---> Geeneus' "Crackish" = ridiculously good transition.
One weird thing about this set being so tribalistic and instrumental is that it reminds me more than usual of certain types of minimal, like stuff that Kindisch might have put out circa 2007.
― Tim F, Tuesday, 6 July 2010 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link
course you then find yourself bowled over by what's left maximalist in there - the goofyness of devine's 'eyes on you' and the mj riddim retrospectively adopting like an old bollywood nth-generation vhs vibe, or yeah that amazing section with the drake remix deliquescing into treble ullulaion, into 'inflation', into lil silva 'night skanker', pincered by the brazilian madness of the havana cultura remix and whatever that dutty new altered natives one is [id plz]... haha and that spyro mix of modjo 'lady' (!!) later on..... mm anyway
i tried tracklisting this set to test how bad i still am at remembering the names of all these tribal riddims and true enough got bored of pressing the ? key, especially for the last hour - would be an awesome funky document though

I would be quite happy for Ill Blu to go through the rest of his career only remixing pop grime tracks.

It looks like this was played on Marcus Nasty's show yesterday evening as well... maybe 10-11 minutes in? It sounds like it's ID'd as "Hit not Miss"
― matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Thursday, 8 July 2010 23:50 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah 17 minutes - i wager "this one hit not miss" is a classic type shantieism though
how good does shants sound on that whole floaty section immediately after it btw, got me feeling emotional for a sec

Haven't had a chance to download the new set yet but my favourite recent Shantie rhyme is the "what's GWANNING cuz?? Why are you startin' trouble/when you can bounce and bubble?!?" one.
not sure 11:20 is j labelz related besides subject matter.
yeah sorry this is a dodgy remix of La Cartier's "Call Me" not J Labelz's "Touch Me".
― Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 01:29 (thirteen years ago) link
at least 40% of that assertion was just me not wanting it to be true tbh, 'touch me' is unimpeachable
― r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 01:33 (thirteen years ago) link
one of my favourite things about garage mc-ing i think is when conversational hosting imperceptibly takes on a rhythm all by itself, before lauching back into a full-fledged lyric when the riddim drops -- shantie does this so, so well especially with his peculiar circularity sometimes (cf "hit not miss" i guess), he's like a dreamy kurupt
shake it down, riddim and beat in herestyle and soundshantie's the mc londons the towndo it for the black white blue brownriddim, beat, style and soundeasy the gang thats on the shakedownin we go
― r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link
Yes, one of my absolute favourite diva tunes of the year. "Call Me" is pretty great though, both the Fuzzy Logick production original and the Roska remix (which is maybe Roska's best tune this past 12 months).
Re Shantie's rhythmatic rhymes, I really like "Shant lyricilly goin' in for the killy and we're hot and we're flame and we burn like chilli"
― Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 05:47 (thirteen years ago) link
your one previous mention of that roska remix last october seems to be the only online record of its existence alas
have found listed a "soulful house mix" of 'call me' on a wireless sound mix a couple of months ago however so that's 11:20 sorted if we're still on that
― r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 10:56 (thirteen years ago) link
if anyone feels like deigning to listen to something that isn't a radio set, i absolute love this scratcha dva mix - http://disko404.org/podcast/podcast.html

8. FUNKYSTEPZ - FULLER
^ yeahhh this tune is a madness - the evil razor slinky attack cousin to naughty raver's 'drama'!
lol don't try turning the prissy tables though.
― r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 11:58 (thirteen years ago) link
greenmoney ep was pretty middling i thought - 'suh mi stay' is fun but eisegete axis struggling with the flava once again otherwise
are post-dropoff south rakkas crew not still signed to fools gold btw? their time now surely
― r|t|c, Friday, 9 July 2010 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link
Lex the passive aggression is misplaced - the fact that you don't like to listen to radio sets doesn't mean we don't listen to anything else.
This set looks great - will download. And yeah "Fuller" is massive, total ravey madness chaos (wrote "madness" w/o even realising r|t|c had just said the same).
BTW that "Call Me" remix is on Roska's 100% Roska productions special for Rinse from September last year. I should up it as it's basically the only Roska set one really needs. The remix is awes, has a fantastic "Pump Up The Jam"-but-ridiculously-stop-start-syncopated feel to it.
― Tim F, Friday, 9 July 2010 12:15 (thirteen years ago) link
Dunno if I ever mentioned this short Undisputed BBC 1xtra special mix earlier in the year:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/ryrk21
Anyway, it's lots of fun, if you don't mind hearing several different iterations of "Sunglasses" (which I certainly don't). Really teases out the bassline influence on funky, lots of slithery slimy but metallic synth sounds and bassline-ish MC-tracks.

Yes! The "Call Me" remix handily demonstrates this.
Okay will try to do this soon. It kinda is too much roska, but it's a handy resource.

roska reminds me a lot of terror danjah.
i wish terror would make some funky, i dont get why he hasnt and why hes made a couple of bloody dubstep tracks instead.
