Academic Decathlon veterans unite. (We won the San Diego championship in my junior year.)

― roxymuzak, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:01 (sixteen years ago) link
Quiz Bowl is like "Jeopardy" except in a five-on-five match-up.
My step-father (who is a math teacher) complains that it doesn't get the press coverage that football gets.

He also believes that a out-of-the-park home run should be discounted as a foul since the ball has left the area of play.

― bell_labs, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link

xpost i didnt feel cuet
― roxymuzak, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:02 (sixteen years ago) link
None of us felt cuet, I for one was an outcast who never dated or kissed or flirted and read a lot of books to use up the time until I could leave my hometown.
Bell labs, on the other hand, at least gets to be a knock-out adult, which is what everyone who matters will remember, anyway.

there was a school's edition which was lame, and all my team mates were idiots so we did really badly. Schools (i.e. team) version was 3 teams of 5.

The girl on the left in that photo was famously loopy, although I'm not sure how much the reputation was deserved. She was allegedly caught fingering herself in French (for real) and had a coffin in her bedroom.
The girl on the right was was proud that her dad was a Tory counciller.

Most of our Pub Quiz mafia went on 15 to 1 at some point. The main reason I could never be arsed was cos there was no money involved.
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:24 (sixteen years ago) link
xp, And I am still a cunt. I actually got called "aloof" on my report from my music teacher that year.

haw! no idea. I think he left at 16. He was very short and was bullied terribly. I had no classes with him until GCSE art. I still remember the sound of a lump of modelling clay the size of a softball hitting him in the head. Those lessons were out of control.
Our school was pretty much 1/3 non-white British until 16+, and you can see what happened there from the year group photo.
― caek, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:27 (sixteen years ago) link
xxxp
I got a U in our GCSE art mock exam. Good times.

caek: I was at state primary until the end of year 5, at which point my parents thought they'd give me a crack "at the highest academic level", and sent me to westminster under school for three years, where, i am happy to inform, i still finished top of the exams, as well as the punishment lists. god i was a gormless twat then (think i'm bad now? then HA)
also my bro, who attends Westminster as well (as a fees-paid academic scholar, but still), got a D at GCSE art proper :p

in fact we were both given the ultimatum: "get a scholarship or we can't afford for you to go". both of us succeeded, and although the school was good for me in that i'd have been SLAUGHTERED at most other places (for being such an extrovert outsider goon), i can't help wondering whether my actual life wouldn't have been improved had i failed to get the grades.
