This kind of art has been martialled and deployed in political campaigns for at least 500 years, it really is not very surprising or even remarkable. Implying that a candidate is gay, or too feminine, or whatever. It's base and it works. Prepare yourself for a mega-dose of this crap whichever Democrate gets nominated. They will be painted as slightly weird, off-kilter, fake, overambitious, unsure of who they are, etc. etc. What is surprising and remarkable is that Democrats seems so perpetually surprised by it when it happens, and so unprepared to fight it.

Marie Antoinette and Catherine the Great to thread!

It's not so much that assertion that I single out, but more this particular instance where one little mistake/media event thing was seized upon as an aperture to let all the usual emasculating bullshit to flow in. Such things are the source of the usual bullshit narratives that get promulgated by "serious" NYT/WaPo punditry.

we need a palate cleanser. Not entirely Batshit and maybe only rightwing when viewed through a certain sort of rearview smoked glass, but there's nothing more awesome than the editorial cartoons of Winsor McCay.

So is Phil Donahue off the hook for being 100% correct & 0% wrong about Iraq?
Or do these guys just have no memory retention beyond the three latest Enemies of Freedom?

Mike Dixn, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:32 (sixteen years ago) link

Like with everybody else in american media, those who got everything about iraq wrong are still used as serious expects, and everybody who actually knew what the fuck they were talking about should not be consulted as they are obviously unserious partisians.

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:49 (sixteen years ago) link

The anti-climate change ones seem to all follow the entirely false logic that hypocrisy in certain proponants of climate change=THE WHOLE THING IS SHAM.

chap, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Either that or the entirely false logic that science is not to be trusted, and we should only believe what we see with our own eyes from day to day.

kenan, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Every time I look @ one of those "day by day" strips, I want actual physical harm to come to the artist.

SRSLY? I am always won over by the hawtness of the women in the strips. and their general surrealism.

The Real Dirty Vicar, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:10 (sixteen years ago) link

When he tries to be good, you get general surrealism. However, when he tries general surrealism...

lets not pretend there aren't plenty of shitty comix artists on the left.

i just tend to find them more 'boring' and less funny than right wing for some reason, usually just relentless bush is dumb 'humor'

Oh there's plenty; however, they ain't the ones doing the usual bush cultist thing and acting like an arm of the RNC.

also get your war on = zzzzzzzz

i don't think the dude anticipated how long the war would last. so there's a lot more "HOLY FLURKKING SCHNITT WTF AMERICA" anger in it these days.

the best bad lefty cartoon is minimum security but yeah its badness isn't real interesting

ever since the one with the middle panel of the guy sleeping in a recliner in a black hole i can't stay mad at day by day

(i still like it overall)

I don't. I like it as this weird comic strip that came out of some smoking volcanic crack of fear and hate and cofusion, right after 9/11. It captured something right then, not least of all absurdity. It's been irrelevant for years.

That's right, 'cuz we all know that who're the biggest pussies in all this: the American Public.

Oh yeah, and Patton would obviously have agreed w/ every single thing our Leader did thus far and affirmed how just our Righteous War is.

Actually, this one is refreshing straightforward and representative:

I know. Thus the "change of note" bit, b/c we have 3 years of other batshit from the guy(his was the pseudo-watterson/breathed style ones on the old thread).

Actually, there's quite a series of 'Falwell at the Pearly Gates' going on, both pro and con.

Just noticed something about this last two:

http://jewishworldreview.com/strips/pc/pc051607.jpg

http://jewishworldreview.com/strips/pc/pc051707.jpg

I don't know if this just a standard comic strip trope, but the first comic is straight Opus-goes-off-to-campaign stuff from Bloom County circa 84/88, all the way down to the big ass tie.

kingfish, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:00 (sixteen years ago) link

hahaha that michael moore one is relying on the audience's knowledge of... an old johnny carson sketch??!

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

"What is, cliche'd ways to make 'michael moore is fat lol' into a punchline?"

deej, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:13 (sixteen years ago) link

Yeah, there's a lot of idea lifting going on, viz. Doonesbury-style floating helmet Patton upthread

elmo argonaut, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:14 (sixteen years ago) link

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:35 (sixteen years ago) link

nice sombrero.

RE Patton - 3,500 casualties:

Wow. Complete lack of soul and character. So there is no shame in *only* 3,500 dead American troups? Should 9/11 victims be mourned considering there were *only* 3,000?

CONCEPT: Dead Americans are dead Americans. War = bad, peace = good.
The end.

This one's kinda unsettling.

http://www.creators.com/comics/37/5754_thumb.jpg

A month later, we still need to get in a violent rapper thing, just cuz the previous 10 strips using the exact same joke apparently weren't good enough.

kingfish, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:33 (sixteen years ago) link
