I haf come late to this thread and am flabbergated by all this. Double Dex0rz = VILE. VILE. Creme Eggs, mars bars, all seriously narsty & a waste ov good cocoa solids. Galaxy "Liason" & "Hazelnut Galaxy" about as near to palatable as you'll get in a newsagent. Do you londoners not have branches of Thornton's? Eat their chocolate & there is no going back to all that waxy crap!

twelve years pass...

double deckers vs lion vs toffee crisp vs drifter vs crunchie

am I leaving anything obv out there? no nuts, must have a crispy/crunchy element

if it gets to this evening with no further contributiins thats held as final poll entries just sayin

local eire man (darraghmac), Saturday, 31 January 2015 23:59 (nine years ago) link

Sack Crunchie from that list. Always too dry and mangles the inside of my mouth.

The joy of cramming a whole nougat layer into your gob after completing the task of gnawing off all the biscuit might win this for the DD. Makes up for lack of caramel element.

Fuse and Maverick are sadly missed.

instead you should do a poll that's a link to this thread and some kind of comprehension test for current ilx

ey kinder ive always liked you so imma let that pass but if you need a safety warning on yr crunchie wrapper that's btwn u and god

I like Crunchies almost as much as I like Double Deckers. If there was a poll, I think the much maligned Boost ("Slightly rippled with a flat underside") would come last.

Also S (not D) Fry's Turkish Delight: full of Eastern promise and then covered in chocolate. Eating actual Turkish Delight as an adult was a real shock.

...I picked one up off the tea trolley the other day not even noticing they had been away...

Does a tea trolley service still exist in UK workplaces?

the gabhal cabal (Bob Six), Sunday, 1 February 2015 14:54 (nine years ago) link

wtf snobes clearly Turkish delight not eligible in the pantheon of crunch/chocolate greats do keep up man

local eire man (darraghmac), Sunday, 1 February 2015 20:38 (nine years ago) link

crunchies are great but feel like they're in a diff category to the others & clearly don't belong in poll imo

socki fan taytay (wins), Sunday, 1 February 2015 20:47 (nine years ago) link

I mean if "crunchy" is your only criterion you'd have to open it up to twix & all other biscuit-containing chocolate bars

socki fan taytay (wins), Sunday, 1 February 2015 20:48 (nine years ago) link

I'm slightly uneasy abt crunchier u may be right but I think twix is a fair nomination I just amnt mad on twixes

Just tried a double decker for the first time. It was a bit of an ordeal to eat: ridiculously tough caramel base accompanied by a slightly unpleasant tasting biscuit section. The most that can be said, I feel, is that it lasts a lot longer than most other snacks.

the gabhal cabal (Bob Six), Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:34 (nine years ago) link

1. It's not caramel
2. You were eating it upside down

Number None, Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:38 (nine years ago) link

lol and otm also dont eat it out of the freezer

local eire man (darraghmac), Sunday, 1 February 2015 21:42 (nine years ago) link

I think it was probably stale.

I'm not sure if I don't like Double Deckers as much as I did in the 80s or if it's just that the only place I decide to buy them now is the work sandwich van, which despite no refrigeration serves all its produce (inc. perma-green bananas) at arctic temperatures most of the year round

I was gonna say Fuse but I forgot they had nuts in and also apparently they don't exist any more

damn you I'm supposed to be on a diet but breakage via chocolate is all too possible as flatmate has left a big pile of Dairy Milk in the kitchen and also I still have a box of Thorntons in my room after I carried it all round the country as an emergency present in case any aunts/uncles I'd forgotten existed turned up to xmas festivities (PS don't feel sorry for me, I just had a Kopparberg, a couple of vodkas and a bag of prawn crackers, so the diet is already p. much dead)

go for it imo

one month passes...

I had a Double Decker a few days ago and was disappointed that it wasn't like I remembered it - the lack of raisins now is a real problem. It's like the bar has lost it's raisin d'être.
Also this morning I had a Cadbury's Dairy Milk with Oreo pieces. Not bad, but could have done with more Oreo and less of that (noticeably cheaper since the Kraft takeover) milk chocolate. The thing that I like about Oreos is that that they have a dark chocolate taste, and it didn't really come through so much here.

The nougat stuff is a lot fluffier now

This is also a problem - it's like the stuff in a Milky Way now.

0xFE Shades of Grey (snoball), Sunday, 1 March 2015 20:45 (nine years ago) link

Meanwhile on a less disappointing tip, on Saturday I had a peanut butter Chunky Kit-Kat and it was rather good.

i never look up uk candy bars on wikipedia because i like encountering the ineffable mystery of "Choctums" or w/e in threads like these, imagining the display aisle containing the assortment, etc. is "Slightly rippled with a flat underside" really a selling point?

hammer smashed nagls (mattresslessness), Sunday, 1 March 2015 22:08 (nine years ago) link

raisins?

local eire man (darraghmac), Sunday, 1 March 2015 22:13 (nine years ago) link

Originally the bar contained raisins within the base layer, however consumer research in the mid-1980s led to these being removed and the current formulation being introduced.

Cadbury's Dairy Milk with Oreo pieces

oh i love these

but i agree about DD's

Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Sunday, 1 March 2015 23:02 (nine years ago) link

Basically Double Deckers are now half Milky Way and half biscuit Boost, which is so totally not what they were about originally.

is "Slightly rippled with a flat underside" really a selling point?

It makes more sense in context...

deckers nothing like milky way tbh

local eire man (darraghmac), Monday, 2 March 2015 18:35 (nine years ago) link

The nougat is now.

0xFE Shades of Grey (snoball), Monday, 2 March 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link

Unless they've made Milky Ways even lighter.

0xFE Shades of Grey (snoball), Monday, 2 March 2015 18:46 (nine years ago) link

I wouldn't know, because I'm all about that deep-fry-this-bastard type heavy chocolate, like a double chocolate Mars Bar or something.

0xFE Shades of Grey (snoball), Monday, 2 March 2015 18:47 (nine years ago) link

I had a Fry's Chocolate Cream this morning for the first time in years, and was disappointed that the fondant centre tasted like toothpaste.
