tsk i wish dubsteppers would stop making that excuse 4 a change

ah yeah tim says nadia suliman sounds too much like amy winehouse - i don't hear it myself but it does make me think la winehouse would be a superb funky vocalist, at least going by the excellent bugz in the attic remix of "in my bed" from years ago

Yeah the "In My Bed" remix is exactly what I was thinking of. It's when Nadia sings "What is it you want from may" that I think of Amy. It's not a bad resemblance, and "No More" is a great song, but it's very profesh in a broken beat kinda way. Possibly I'm too committed to the slightly sickly/lopsided qualities of my favourite uk funky vocal tracks.

haha omg seriously did we never do this? was the first ever screama one iirc and probably still remains his best - STUPENDOUS TUNE. it's a bit like cooly g but feminine.

guilty lolz at this spot on summation.

Tim F, Thursday, 27 May 2010 12:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Oi RTC I listened to one of those Sef mixes (the most recent one) and it's alright but nothing to get excited about. Closer to standard issue tasteful UK vocal house than funky, or the more bassy South African stuff. Also I'd have preferred, well, a bit more Africa in there, if you hadn't been told you'd never know where the music came from.

LOVE THIS TUNE:

perempay was AWESOME at tactile last night, played lots of south african house (inc "mirror dance"!)...

GUHH tim i thought i'd searched every possible googler variation looking for that tune this week! (tis what i thought was the "khaneo" one). can't listen again right now but it's really lingered in my mind since i first heard.

r|t|c, Sunday, 30 May 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I know, it seems like it shouldn't be that memorable but something about it is entrancing. Love eerie funky.

The other Carneo beats on Youtube don't sound much cop, sadly.

Tim F, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Lex I assume you like Perempay's "Addicted"? It's certainly erm straightforward enough (not a criticism!) to be an anthem-not-anthem along the lines of "In The Air" etc, though curiously I don't hear it that much (maybe not enough DJs have copies yet).

Tim F, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i haven't (knowingly) heard "addicted"...

i like this new greenmoney/mz bratt track though - http://soundcloud.com/greenmoney/whos-greenmoney-feat-mz-bratt

Great vocal tunes, Tim. The strings in the Champion remix kill me.

I don't know if anyone else saw this, but this weekend Hard House Banton placed a link on his Twitter account to some mixes he's done: http://www.filefront.com/user/HardHouseBanton

In particular, the May / June 2010 mix is fantastic. ...contains both that Funk Butcher vocal tune (Pull Me Close) and Delinquent's "Dancehall"

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 31 May 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Speaking of Mike Delinquent Project.. I discovered this morning that he actually just released an EP called "Genesis" which includes Dancehall. 4 tracks, all pretty great. Lots of dancehall & bassline touches, but still firmly funky.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 31 May 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

one thing that confuses me about this genre is the sound quality issue ... on a dancefloor producers/djs have always been hyper-concerned with the beats having a really big impact & based on mp3s ive heard some of this stuff is probably coming thru speakers in a pretty thin way ... are the big DJs seriously working off the same mp3s we're hearing? or do they have exclusive flac versions or something??

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Monday, 31 May 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

320s most likely. cant see them asking each other for flacs somehow.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

who made that take it back to the 80s tune? so fucking large.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it was NB Funky, titchy.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 31 May 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

now that tune IS funky

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey I'm not a Doubting Thomas - I think I've already admitted I haven't been paying that much attention. Still, the sun coming out has changed that and yeah Can You Kiss Me There is massive, easily as good as any vocal anthem from 08 or 09.

The Men Who Stare At Goatse (Matt DC), Monday, 31 May 2010 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link

can you kiss me there is ok. its naggingly, in the most literal housewifey sense of the word, memorable. i dont really hear it as being that much better than a million other funky vocal tunes, though its one of the better ones, sure. i feel is a 100 times better. i should stop going on about that seeing as its not really new, but djs seem to be playing it more now for some reason.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i need it, i feel, house girls, take it back, might be my favourite funky tracks of the moment (at least the ones i can name, theres a dozen others i cant)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I meant "for these dudes and any doubting thomases..." not that you are one Matt.

Tim F, Monday, 31 May 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

My top ten 2010 at the mo is:

Devine Collective - House Girls Part 6 (it is 6, right?)
Rudimental - Midnight Affair
Ill Blu - whatever it's called
Funkystepz - Lovers
Devine Collective - People Keep Dancing
Roll Deep - Good Times (Ill Blu Remix)
T2 - Better Off As Friends (Lil Silva Remix)
Craig David - One More Lie (Ill Blu Remix)
Screama & Farah - Kiss Me There/I Can't Lose (these run together in my head)
Naughty Raver - Drama

I think of "I Feel" as last year as well really - I think it's just that DJs other than Supa-D finally got copies this year.

Tim F, Monday, 31 May 2010 21:10 (thirteen years ago) link

i thought house girls was on part 8 (thats what youve been saying tim!)
ill blues dragon pop is also stupidly good
i wish i could devine stuff on youtube.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

sticking with old stuff, differnet lekstrix is still doing it for me, despite being - i think- around when apple had mr bean out!!

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:22 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and that ill blu remix makes up for the sin that is the original roll deep single.
wiley should really be ashamed, jesus.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

oh and i love roskas sqwawk too.
ok ill stop posting now.
whenever i look at this thread i find i like more funky than i actually thought i did.
its like im almost surprising myself by still liking funky/house lol (old anti house conditioning is still there clearly).

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:25 (thirteen years ago) link

howevaaaaa. also....

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcoyINptA94 and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-dX4C3ZnYY&feature=related

i think the 1st one is better.

LOVE the funk butcher/shea soul track tim.

(it's an alias of someone we know already at any rate, can't quite recall who)

"kiss me there" is my favourite funky vocal ever i think

django weingart (samosa gibreel), Monday, 31 May 2010 23:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm still rather partial to the vocal for Lil Silva's "Different":

<object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/-SPMRtMqmgI&hl=en_US&fs=1&";></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/-SPMRtMqmgI&hl=en_US&fs=1&"; type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object>

Dunno if it's 2010 or 09 though..

i think funk butcher = alias of swindle

(it's an alias of someone we know already at any rate, can't quite recall who)

Funk Butcher is a massive DJ on the scene (obv that's a relative thing!) and has been since day dot. If anything Swindle would be an alias for Funk Butcher (if you take my meaning) but I don't think they're the same person (though "No More" and "Pull Me Close" do sound rather similar).

Should funky house scepticism be assigned the same level of global importance as, say, climate change denial?

haha am i crazy or is dream (of petchy fame) doing some dazed essex spoken word over black coffee's 'superman' not some magically brilliant shit? 67mins, new marcus show

r|t|c, Friday, 4 June 2010 01:24 (thirteen years ago) link

like it's a great song anyway but i'd never have thought it'd be quite right for a funky set - somehow dream's managed to quotidianize its innate deep house sophistication into a daydream by the pier with an ice cream. seems to ring true right at the heart of that bassline/nu-soul sugar axis

r|t|c, Friday, 4 June 2010 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

all that and marcus still plays a bit of lil silva 'against yaself' over the top and then mixes out into 'house girls 8'. best music ever

r|t|c, Friday, 4 June 2010 01:43 (thirteen years ago) link

This thread is amazing but it's so long and hard to scan through - what was that business about a UK funky night in London aimed at gays that I hope I didn't imagine? Is this still an actual thing? Here in Glasgow I've yet to find a decent club night where I'll hear this stuff with a bit more regularity than the Numbers/LuckyMe axis allows, and I'm currently planning a summer jaunt down south with an "underground homo thug" so this would be icing on the cake.

boxedjoy, Friday, 4 June 2010 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

really really love the dummy-sell in the aramac 'hurt inside' tune played at 27 mins where you're expect a sledgehammer drop and get sweet 2step canderel instead. also who is "khaneo" with that twilit number at 95 mins?

Cosmic revenge for me working out "Carnao" - I tried endless spelling variations of "Aramac" to track down "Hurt Inside" after hearing it on the 1 June show, only to get led back to this thread!

AWESOME tune.

This guy is great btw. On his Facebook page he describes his "band members":

Members: Cubase, Korge Keyboard, Halion Sampler, Edirol Speakers, Cora, Bongos, Balafunk

http://www.facebook.com/aramacmusic#!/aramacmusic?v=app_2405167945

"Friday Night" is great too.

Tim F, Saturday, 5 June 2010 14:10 (thirteen years ago) link

just cos he says balafunk...

i've just done the lazy thing and listened to the altered natives album instead of having a traxsource session. i guess it's ok but maybe a bit indelicate with the acid cues - would rather something more along the lines of 'afterlife riddim' and 'restless native'. ('i'm just a crush' is fun though.)

felt a little last week like i'd glimpsed some fleeting new acidy societal geometry while digesting carneo and the new ne-yo song at the same time, but i forget what i was on now tbh.

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 June 2010 16:10 (thirteen years ago) link

rtc where do you listen to all these marcus sets?

teflon donk (samosa gibreel), Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:29 (thirteen years ago) link

http://rinse.fm/index.php/podcasts every week

funk butcher and funkystepz are also good supplemental listens too

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:53 (thirteen years ago) link

that most recent marcus is a funky vocals showcase for the first 40 mins before it gets all mixxy, just so u know.

talking of funk butcher btw - on his most recent show a guest-starring marcus mentioned 'pull me close' as fb's first production so i guess that's that issue solved. (fb also goes on to play a refix he'd done of of mavado's 'weh dem a do' which again has a loose-limbed broken beatish vibe to it; they then discuss doing a modern funky bashment set before dropping a funky mix of I LIKE TO MOVE IT MOVE IT instead.)

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:03 (thirteen years ago) link

Surprised that people don't seem to be responding to the Lil' Silva remix of T2 - would have thought its sturm und drang would be appealing to people?

It's verging on symphonic.
