Ha ha the fact that their other big remixes are for Sabrina Washington's "OMG" and Craig David's "One More Lie" should tell you they have a knock with the old British sow's ear R&B thing.

The remix is great, very plasticky and squirmy:

i just bought a lil silva 12 on night slugs the other day. looks like i wasted my money as i think my one was only a 2 tracker. fuckers.

dunno why you guys keep blanking the ill blu roll deep remix, it's mindblowing. i might also argue it's one of the very few occasions with them where the original vocals don't seem a little superfluous to the domineering virtuoso production - not that i don't enjoy the others nevertheless.

also v glad to see mike delinquent's fully on dis ting. 'dancehall' is great too and he's always had a pretty varied and generous pop ear since mid-00s ukg times - 'my destiny' still bangs to this day (as he seems keen to remind everyone lately.)

btw excitement weren't quite the main thrust of the silva vs slugs gag but yeah, i like what i've heard, it should be good.

him and everyone else in the scene still look like my little ponies compared to this though. 'AAAARD.

FNKY sounds like the new aerobics beat ala ZUMBA...

so if you take away the galloping latin beat is it still funky ? Anyone got/doing tunes that don't have THAT beat ?

This is awesome also but (a) I need a better quality version, and (b) it falls a little outside my point re R&B/Pop remixes.

Tim F, Thursday, 20 May 2010 23:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i've only heard the ill blu roll deep remix on youtube, shitty quality admittedly but i wasn't inspired to seek out a good version. the original is appalling.

did we mention swindle's who said funk ep?! we really should - pretty tip-top r&b funky business w/vocals from miss fire, natalie may etc.

also, it can't be understated just how incredible princess nyah's "pon de floor" remix is - between that and her "pass out" freestyle (I'LL MAKE U PASS OUT - U SEE THE HEELS AND THE LEGS BUT NO ARSE OUT), i pretty much want her to take on every beat going right now.

Using "Natty" as some kind of example in against my argument makes no sense to me, it's a great groove but obviously would be pretty much impossible to sing over.

In other news, having now heard the "Good Times" remix in high definition I can cosign its massiveness.

Tim F, Tuesday, 25 May 2010 13:24 (thirteen years ago) link

tbf the chords (sampled from where, anyone? - nggh this will bug me for days) on that 'natty' mix are doing alot in the vocal's favour.

tim i'm not sure if i understood what you meant when you said the 'good times' mix fell outside your point above? afaict i don't think it does.

marcus-wise this has been another successful week in the "what beatific wonderment will rankin come out with when he hears the screama & farah tune as if for the first time every time" stakes.

really really love the dummy-sell in the aramac 'hurt inside' tune played at 27 mins where you're expect a sledgehammer drop and get sweet 2step canderel instead. also who is "khaneo" with that twilit number at 95 mins?

What is it about these dudes that they love soulful uk funky more than anyone else does. Only with obnoxious banging drums that makes them marcus-friendly.

Did we ever talk about that Screama track with the goblin squiggles and the vocal "when you hold me tight..."

tim i'm not sure if i understood what you meant when you said the 'good times' mix fell outside your point above? afaict i don't think it does.

Only insofar as the original is pop-rap rather than R&B or straight pop. It's closer to the 321 remix than anything else, flashy and glamorous and more about a succession of great hooks than crafting (or maintaining) a cohesive song. What has surprised me a little with the other R&B/pop remixes this year is how well they've hung together as songs (and often they weren't great songs to begin with) - which I wouldn't have expected given how OTT they are. Whereas Ill Blu's own vocal tracks can hold together as songs only because they generally sound much more subdued than the remixes do.

Judging by this it looks like Nigeria funky might soon be a thing.

The Men Who Stare At Goatse (Matt DC), Wednesday, 26 May 2010 15:20 (thirteen years ago) link

ok i briefly touched on this swindle ep upthread but i'm definitely loving it - LOVE the piano and the gobbling bassline that echoes it on "no more", really emphasising the "funky" of funky house, and the horns are just delightful. something a bit basement jaxxy about it, no? and nadia suliman rides it really well. "part time lover" with miss fire also great.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VloyUR4HxoY

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrLGecnz3aY

talking of miss fire, she gave away this track on twitter the other day - i love her fluttery layered vocals. it sounds like it should be about a summer crush ("what is happening to mee-e-e?") but it's about writer's block, lol http://www.sendspace.com/file/2szpdf

that nigerian funky tune is pretty ace! (there is def a bit of ldn involved in that though, donaeo's in the video for the original.) yr more classicist african house is meant to be doing a lot right now incidentally - dj sef has been compiling mixes but i havent gotten around to checking them out yet.

That DJ Sef site looks like a fantastic resource RTC. Think there may be a lot of potential overlap between some strains of African house and funky - the Ayobaness comp from South Africa seems to have a load of overlap with it, sonically, especially things like the Redlight tune upthread.

unngghhhh i STILL haven't caught up w/reading everything that happened in the week my laptop broke

ah yeah tim says nadia suliman sounds too much like amy winehouse - i don't hear it myself but it does make me think la winehouse would be a superb funky vocalist, at least going by the excellent bugz in the attic remix of "in my bed" from years ago

Actually there is, incredibly, no thread for African house, as far as I can see. It probably deserves its own thread given how much there is out there. But yeah will check out mixes and report back.

(And yes, Ayobaness = totally one of the releases of the year)

Yeah the "In My Bed" remix is exactly what I was thinking of. It's when Nadia sings "What is it you want from may" that I think of Amy. It's not a bad resemblance, and "No More" is a great song, but it's very profesh in a broken beat kinda way. Possibly I'm too committed to the slightly sickly/lopsided qualities of my favourite uk funky vocal tracks.

haha omg seriously did we never do this? was the first ever screama one iirc and probably still remains his best - STUPENDOUS TUNE. it's a bit like cooly g but feminine.

guilty lolz at this spot on summation.

Tim F, Thursday, 27 May 2010 12:24 (thirteen years ago) link

Oi RTC I listened to one of those Sef mixes (the most recent one) and it's alright but nothing to get excited about. Closer to standard issue tasteful UK vocal house than funky, or the more bassy South African stuff. Also I'd have preferred, well, a bit more Africa in there, if you hadn't been told you'd never know where the music came from.

I know, it seems like it shouldn't be that memorable but something about it is entrancing. Love eerie funky.

The other Carneo beats on Youtube don't sound much cop, sadly.

Tim F, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

Lex I assume you like Perempay's "Addicted"? It's certainly erm straightforward enough (not a criticism!) to be an anthem-not-anthem along the lines of "In The Air" etc, though curiously I don't hear it that much (maybe not enough DJs have copies yet).

Tim F, Sunday, 30 May 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Great vocal tunes, Tim. The strings in the Champion remix kill me.

I don't know if anyone else saw this, but this weekend Hard House Banton placed a link on his Twitter account to some mixes he's done: http://www.filefront.com/user/HardHouseBanton

In particular, the May / June 2010 mix is fantastic. ...contains both that Funk Butcher vocal tune (Pull Me Close) and Delinquent's "Dancehall"

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 31 May 2010 16:18 (thirteen years ago) link

Speaking of Mike Delinquent Project.. I discovered this morning that he actually just released an EP called "Genesis" which includes Dancehall. 4 tracks, all pretty great. Lots of dancehall & bassline touches, but still firmly funky.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 31 May 2010 16:23 (thirteen years ago) link

one thing that confuses me about this genre is the sound quality issue ... on a dancefloor producers/djs have always been hyper-concerned with the beats having a really big impact & based on mp3s ive heard some of this stuff is probably coming thru speakers in a pretty thin way ... are the big DJs seriously working off the same mp3s we're hearing? or do they have exclusive flac versions or something??

its like why GROCERY BAG and not saddam? (deej), Monday, 31 May 2010 16:52 (thirteen years ago) link

320s most likely. cant see them asking each other for flacs somehow.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

who made that take it back to the 80s tune? so fucking large.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 17:50 (thirteen years ago) link

I think it was NB Funky, titchy.

matt damon & the jb's (the anephric project), Monday, 31 May 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

now that tune IS funky

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 18:01 (thirteen years ago) link

Hey I'm not a Doubting Thomas - I think I've already admitted I haven't been paying that much attention. Still, the sun coming out has changed that and yeah Can You Kiss Me There is massive, easily as good as any vocal anthem from 08 or 09.

The Men Who Stare At Goatse (Matt DC), Monday, 31 May 2010 19:23 (thirteen years ago) link

can you kiss me there is ok. its naggingly, in the most literal housewifey sense of the word, memorable. i dont really hear it as being that much better than a million other funky vocal tunes, though its one of the better ones, sure. i feel is a 100 times better. i should stop going on about that seeing as its not really new, but djs seem to be playing it more now for some reason.

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

i need it, i feel, house girls, take it back, might be my favourite funky tracks of the moment (at least the ones i can name, theres a dozen others i cant)

titchy (titchyschneiderMk2), Monday, 31 May 2010 21:03 (thirteen years ago) link

I meant "for these dudes and any doubting thomases..." not that you are one Matt.

Tim F, Monday, 31 May 2010 21:06 (thirteen years ago) link

My top ten 2010 at the mo is:

Devine Collective - House Girls Part 6 (it is 6, right?)
Rudimental - Midnight Affair
Ill Blu - whatever it's called
Funkystepz - Lovers
Devine Collective - People Keep Dancing
Roll Deep - Good Times (Ill Blu Remix)
T2 - Better Off As Friends (Lil Silva Remix)
Craig David - One More Lie (Ill Blu Remix)
Screama & Farah - Kiss Me There/I Can't Lose (these run together in my head)
Naughty Raver - Drama

I think of "I Feel" as last year as well really - I think it's just that DJs other than Supa-D finally got copies this year.
