On a totally different topic, I just want to say how awesome you all are and how much I <3 you all.

Thanks for the sanity-saving commentary, especially of late!

I'm afraid to wade into the election threads. Never good at catching up on long ones.

Congrats to those of you in blue states!

When they called it our street erupted in whoops and cheers, firecrackers were let off. I cried. Like a baby.

Hey ITR, I was so full of vodka when I got home last night.

The Franken thing is soooooooo crazy; do we know if the first count includes absentees/overseas? I would like him to win by ONE overseas vote - mine - and did not know that Barkley was 'stopped' for soliciting at the fitness centre across the street from my mom's office, or so says madre at any rate. That was the last useful contribution she made before going into meltdown over my Franken vote. WTF HE IS OUR ST LOUIS PARK HOMEBOY.

I <3 Keith Ellison so much. The margin of return is wonderful, since behind the Muslim novelty factor is a hardworking district Congressman of the old school. Obviously Bachmann's district will have to concern-troll her for all of the next two years or find something petty and illegal she's done and escalate the shit out of it until she has to go quietly.

Mom phoned to 'call' MN for me and is spitting nails, she's so pissed off. I very reasonably pointed out that when her guy won in less legitimate circumstances I didn't rail that hard so respect the moment, OK?

Drinking Points Memo (suzy), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 13:45 (fifteen years ago) link

I did not drink for fear of falling asleep but I was wide awake and even work up an hour early today. Too excited.

G did fall asleep but I shook him violently awake to watch the acceptance speech.

i could not make myself go to bed til after 3 and now i am a week bit hungover. meanwhile, i have just noticed, while checking the mn senate race, that you have a county called "lac qui parle." really!? does mn have talking lakes!? bc that really might weigh heavily in my city choices.

I can has a President Obama?

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 14:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i have a hot president waiting for me in my whitehouse so let me just post this:

i am really misty this morning! i think it's still sinking in... prop 8 makes me ;_;

;n_n; (tehresa), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I need to really kick ass with the workload today and I can't focus for shit.

A socialist who's happy to spread the wealth (Susan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 14:54 (fifteen years ago) link

Tehresa, I think that if you were to slink into the Whitehouse right now, you would be sorely disappointed.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 14:58 (fifteen years ago) link

it's true, i was a bit premature but YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN

;n_n; (tehresa), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 14:59 (fifteen years ago) link

lolz and <3s to all of you.

Ugh on Coleman & Bachmann and especially Prop. 8. Why are we always going two steps forward, two steps back in this country? That's no way to dance, people.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Actually if you put some swivellage into it, that is exactly The Hustle.

Sara, what is recount news now?

Jesse Wept (suzy), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:42 (fifteen years ago) link

I have searched for recount news and Kos is saying the margin is Coleman in front by 600 votes so a recount is necessary but no breakdowns on absentee/overseas, ARGH.

Jesse Wept (suzy), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 16:46 (fifteen years ago) link

TZA, we have much to commend in the names of things in MN also if the name's in French, it was given in the 17th century by les voyageurs and probably translated from whatever it was called by the original settler NA tribe in question. Hennepin was one of these guys, and when Hennepin Avenue was full of peep shows and stripper bars I loved pointing out to 'adults' that it was named after an 'explorer' priest.

happy day for you, america ;) ;)

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 17:18 (fifteen years ago) link

it was weird to wake up to day and remember what happened last night... i'm not a 'politics person' at all, know virtually nothing about it etc. etc. but even i can't help but feel like some huge black clouds have cleared.

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 17:19 (fifteen years ago) link

i just posted on the election thread:

it was interesting, as a foreigner living in the US, listening to my bf talk to his folks about the election: he was saying that everyone of their generation remembers where they were and what they were doing the day jfk got shot, but our generation, all over the world, will always remember where they were the day obama was elected president.

we have been invited to a huge inauguration party in delaware, lots of writers and poets and artists and small press publishers, all camping out at our friend's house... just found out today that it coincides with bf's work tradeshow (mandatory attendance) :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

undiscovered cuntry (Rubyredd), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 17:22 (fifteen years ago) link

I will remember that I was at home, in my pajamas, in a disbelieving but happy funk.

xp suzy - Coleman has declared victory, Franken has not conceded, there will be a recount, I know nothing of where the numbers actually are (sorry)...

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 17:49 (fifteen years ago) link

i was in the kitchen making pasta, and jordan was taking a leak! we both heard the announcement (we had the tv up so loud), and we kind of come into the living room at the same time, a little gobsmacked.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 17:55 (fifteen years ago) link

I just got off the phone with my sister, who really didn't get why pundits are falling all over themselves about OMG FIRST BLACK PRESIDENT. I tried to explain...

At one point I told her that Michelle Obama's maiden name was "Robinson," so it's plausible that our ancestor could have owned her ancestors. H's response: "well, our ancestors weren't here yet." (I should add that I prefaced this with the general notion that the history of African-Americans in this country suggested to many that this could never happen.)

Missing the point by looking at the trees instead of the forest. DUH.

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:11 (fifteen years ago) link

but our generation, all over the world, will always remember where they were the day obama was elected president.

And 9/11.

Yeah, I kind of wish I had been somewhere else but sitting in my bed but whatever.

A socialist who's happy to spread the wealth (Susan), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:41 (fifteen years ago) link

Sara, you can feel free to start an email chain between your sister, J031 and me on this topic.

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:43 (fifteen years ago) link

GRRRRR Norman would declare victory; one can only hope it is along the lines of MISSION ACCOMPLISHED. Only hope Al swings it and does not lose by something like same exact number as another Al 'lost'. Oh the ironing.

I can't find any info about whether overseas votes figure in the count we've got.

Jesse Wept (suzy), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:52 (fifteen years ago) link

When CNN called it for Obama:

I was on my iPhone.

I was standing in the middle of the room with (mostly) med students and lawyers that I did not know. I was repeatedly shouting, "Virginia! Virginia! Virginia!" I had just twittered my call for an Obama victory, and was texting friends "VIRGINIA" in response to their "OHIO"'s. I was very drunk. I hugged strangers. I went outside and stopped holding back the tears. I handed out smokes to non-smokers and we drank champagne.

Shut down the party. Biked home at 1 AM. All over uptown and downtown Minneapolis, people were still cheering in the streets.

Fluffy Bear Hearts Rainbows, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Hang in there, suzy; we've still got our fingers crossed!

xp Which one of us has to explain that some of our first US presidents owned slaves and that that really wasn't that long ago? (Hard to say which one of us would be the least polite.) I honestly don't know if the obtuseness is willfull or what. I don't get it!!!

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:57 (fifteen years ago) link

FB, I like your story the best. :)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 18:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Hey, my sister Twittered that she liked that I "explained things" to her. No idea what to make of that, but I'm going to take it. (Also, I hope I did a good job of explaining, since maybe she was listening?!)

Sara R-C, Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:25 (fifteen years ago) link

This is a guess, but maybe the issue yr sister is currenlty dealing with is that she got shoved into a box where she didn't actually have to think all that much and now, as she raises her kids, she's maybe realizing that wasn't such a positive thing for her...?

Black Seinfeld (HI DERE), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 20:41 (fifteen years ago) link

a skinner box?

NURSES! WE AT FRUIT AT WORK! (John Justen), Wednesday, 5 November 2008 21:22 (fifteen years ago) link

H. narrowly escaped John's attempt to put her into a Skinner box, only to experience a far more ignominious fate:

I think that is part of the issue my sister is dealing with, also that her husband is literally never home while she has the four kids all the time. (Cuz her husband is out doing the farming thing.) So yeah, she put herself in that box, but I do feel bad for her about it. She clearly has no idea how to fix it.

Also I feel totally guilty that I'm the Heather's Husband figure in my family lately due to school.

hahahaha, the cover of the Northfield News that came out today has a photo of three of the women elected to our city government yesterday. The headline? "Broadening the Field."

How tired were the editors last night?

I have been on the treadmill and before that reading about the various types of shock. More reading about shock to follow...

xp The article also mentioned that we had a "more estrogen-laden" slate of winners here last night than usual. I suspect they were really drunk when the front page was created.

omg thanksgiving planning guilt trips already. ugh. 2 years in a row.

Yikes. I hate the family guilties. Hey, my family never does that to me, though; it's A's family who is always unhappy if we can't come. One thing I really appreciate about my family. SERIOUSLY

We will be at Disney World for Thanksgiving. I just have to get through the rest of this class and I can think about our crazy big trip!

Sara R-C, Thursday, 6 November 2008 05:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Disney World!

A socialist who's happy to spread the wealth (Susan), Thursday, 6 November 2008 13:15 (fifteen years ago) link

The R-C family fixation is Disney World. We happened to be there about a month after 9/11 (A. had to be at a conference) and it turned out to be the perfect place to be at that time. Unfortunately, it is a crazy expensive addiction.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 6 November 2008 16:18 (fifteen years ago) link

We've never been to Disney World and the last time I was at Disneyland was 1977. ;_;

ps Dan, I know you have been a ton of cooler places than Disney World since college; your international travel totally dwarfs mine (Canada & Japan). Having kids is probably the other half of the OMG I AM AN EMBARRASSING DISNEY ADDICT thing, too. It is really fun to take them.

Sara R-C, Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:14 (fifteen years ago) link

well. this is why i get for putting off eye doctor visits for far too long: woke up late, put in contact OW OW OW can not wear contact. white of eye super irritated and red. oh wait - my glasses are from 2004 and i can't wear them for more than 5 min without getting a headache! great. now i have to go to lens crafters (lol) and get new ones made because they are the only ppl that can do same day (unless someone else knows of another racket that will do this) and they can not see me until 4:30. so... no working. also, missing class. fantastic. also i do not even want to think about how much this is all going to cost.

;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 6 November 2008 17:21 (fifteen years ago) link
