i'm just getting through those mixtapes now

i really like this weird raspy croak that he's got when he sings his hooks ("nickelodeon", "haunted house") and originally i thought his mixtape tracks were too blunted to really register for me (whereas back to the traphouse is glossy as fuck and tons of fun to listen to) but i'm kind of digging the mood but maybe i'm just projecting

Three new Gucci Mane albums yesterday: Purple Album (ft. Young Thug); White Album (ft. Peewee Longway) and Green Album (ft. Migos).

Purple Album sounds OK but hardly has any Gucci verses on it. White Album is sounding awesome on first listen. Not sure if I can stomach more Migos flow though so I might skip Green Album unless people recommend it.

Evan R, Thursday, 19 June 2014 17:29 (1 year ago) Permalink

So none of those Gucci albums got any attention, but the Purple and White albums are all above average late-period Gucci tapes. I think White Album is maybe my fav 1017 release of the year so far. Peewee Longway is positioning himself as 1017's answer to Meek Mill, which is a great thing to be

Funny how his tape with the best verses/beats/song concepts is also somehow one of the ones with the worst sound quality. Not complaining though; I wasn't expecting a tape this enjoyable from him again until at least 2016

Holy shit: Gucci put out three albums earlier this summer that I had never even heard of: Gucci Vs. Guwop, The Oddfather and Trap House 4. I dunno if I'll ever get around to listening to those; I feel like I am still catching up with last year's World War 3 trilogy

Evan R, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 03:21 (9 months ago) Permalink

Anyway, Gucci's quality control has dipped hard over the last year or so, and a few bad tapes in particular left a sour taste in my mouth (Trap Back 2 marked the start of an ugly slide imo). But overall I'm surprised how much worthwhile music the guy continues to put out. I would've assumed his incarceration would have rendered his latest tapes almost worthless by now, but every few months he still manages to put out a really worthwhile release

Evan R, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 03:27 (9 months ago) Permalink

his archives must be just voluminous

Another trilogy of mixtapes this week. Anybody heard them? From this point out I'm probably only going to check out his tapes when somebody recommends them; the post-prison drop has been pretty steep

Evan R, Thursday, 19 March 2015 19:40 (4 months ago) Permalink

I love Gucci but If you're still keeping up with this stuff you have way more patience (and time) than me. The slew of mixtapes seems more like a ridiculously transparent attempt to maintain some relevance whilst incarcerated, not sure it's working though and as I read somewhere recently he could perhaps learn from Lil Boosie in that respect.

grant holt (prettylikealaindelon), Thursday, 19 March 2015 19:57 (4 months ago) Permalink

That's an element of that, but what he's doing goes so far beyond simple maintenance. He's on track for 12-15 mixtapes in a year

Evan R, Thursday, 19 March 2015 20:34 (4 months ago) Permalink

I think he has 9 new ones out this year already.

i wouldn't assume that much or any of this is happening with his full consent

J0rdan S., Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:41 (4 months ago) Permalink

There was an article maybe half a year ago that explained how these tapes are made. The gist, if I recall, was that the producers compile the songs, but Gucci still calls the shots and essentially has final edit, even from behind bars—that he suggests themes, points out which verses go with which choruses, where guests belong, etc. I'm guessing that account overstated how active Gucci is in the whole process; he's probably not quite as hands on as all that, but at the very least this is all happening with his consent

Evan R, Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:45 (4 months ago) Permalink

i have trouble believing gucci was putting together projects with raury and andy milonakis but idk maybe he needs teh $

deej loaf (D-40), Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:48 (4 months ago) Permalink

gucci has no involment in all this new stuff.

ANU (sisilafami), Thursday, 19 March 2015 21:51 (4 months ago) Permalink

Even if he doesn't sweat the artistic details, I think he's still very much in the loop about the business details. His mixtape empire is a machine that he built, and it's in his best interest to keep it running.

There's also a great anecdote in some article about Young Thug about how one of the labels courting Thug just assumed they could pluck him, since there was no way 1017 had all its legal contracts in order, but sure enough, 1017 did. It's a more orderly operation than it sometimes seems on the surface
