D: Jaret's Room, Mango, Adam Sa...I mean, Jimmy Fallon's guitar parodies
I think Jimmy Fallon is rather funny, but not nearly as funny (nor original) as he seems to think he is.
Actually, I think the plight of SNL is that they have some extremely talented cast members, but don't have the solid writing to back it up like in some days of yore. There are sporadic bits of amazingly funny stuff ("I got a fever, and the only prescription is more cowbell!"), but it's just not SOLID.

Weekend Update is awful, sorry. There's no bite to the jokes. they seem happily surprised if a joke does well, and if it doesn't they lean reaaaal hard on the "it's not funny; isn't that funny!?" thing that is the death-knell of television comedy (cf Johnny Carson, Conan's monologue)

Everyone keeps banging on about SNL and I've never seen it - indeed, living in the UK with no Sky means I probably never will. Is there like a SNL Best Of DVD around? Or should I not bother - is it over-hyped rubbish?

The M'OD bio "Mr Mike" is worth a read. He bitched when the original cast started to do recurring characters, cuz he thought that was too much like Carol Burnett etc.

the writers' terror of offending anyone makes most of the sketches heavily dependent on unfunny gimmicks and repetition, much like conan o'brien's show these days.

the hot air balloon was totally a rip-off of Tim and Eric style bad TV. Tonight wasn't so funny. Cold open was pretty weak and the game show too. Steve Martin and Tina were good in the intro. I also liked Tina's Hillary rant. What's the story on the new girl?

Even with Zach's terrible show you had the editing bit that was pretty major lolz. This episode was unfunny through and through, and worth it only for VW tunes. Wiig had some great bits, but none of them were her recurring characters.

Sad that Hader is bailing, but if Armisen leaves (long overdue) and Sudeikis leaves (he's had one foot out the door all season) and Seth Meyers moves to his late night show, that could give the writing a fresh edge and more room for whoever remains in the cast to move around a little. Kate McKinnon is obvs going to be promoted to full cast member status next season, and Aidy Bryant and Cecily Strong are possibilites. Tim Robinson seems mostly like dead weight.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 16:42 (5 days ago) Permalink
I feel like Robinson hasn't been given much of a chance to shine. Granted, I don't remember him too well from the Second City mainstage show I saw him in, but Chicago improv/sketch folks generally seem to love him.

― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 16:52 (5 days ago) Permalink
I like Stefon as much as the next person, I guess, but what I'm really hoping for on Hader's last episode is a Herb Welch sketch.
― Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 14 May 2013 18:13 (5 days ago) Permalink
Aidy Bryant has not done even one thing that I've liked to date, but to be fair they do give her a lot of the straight, unglamorous parts. But she doesn't do that well with them? Robinson also gets a lot of those kind of parts but I think he elevates them more than Bryant does.
