A+ display name.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link

some stuff on the 1st mammatus rec that leans in this direction, though generally more hawkwind-aligned.

contenderizer, Friday, 14 May 2010 21:21 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh yeah, GONG sometimes have that motorik/drone thing going. So much dross to sort through to get to the nuggets, though!

Bashful Johnny C. (staggerlee), Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Mugstar
I might like them more than Circle, even. 1st record is good & I'm not sure what I think of new one but it has a great sound for sure, a lot of alternating spacey & heavy repetitive... trensmat 7" is awesome & collected on label CD comp

Snop Snitchin, Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:40 (thirteen years ago) link

someone mentioned the heads. otm. white hills too.

contenderizer, Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:43 (thirteen years ago) link

new Cave sounds good on 1st listen, they mellowed out some.

noone mentioned La Otracina, White Hills, or Burnt Hills in this thread... former might be too proggy to qualify. (xpost)
See also trensmat singles, 6 sides of contemporary Hawkwind covers compiled partially on aforementioned label CD comp.

Snop Snitchin, Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:54 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah except i just mentioned white hills

that trensmat singles set is cool, only place i've heard mugstar (who turn in my favorite track)

contenderizer, Saturday, 15 May 2010 00:58 (thirteen years ago) link

five months pass...

Mugstar have had quite the banner year! Both ...Sun, Broken... and Lime are spectacular. Just cranked the latter at ear-splitting levels and drifted right out of my head. Wonderful.

Has anyone heard this yet?

That In Search of Hawkwind album looks intriguing.

EZ Snappin, Saturday, 13 November 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link

Is that the thing that was released as a bunch of split 7"s a while back?

Haven't seen the name Magoo in years.

Sméagol-Eye Cherry (NickB), Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i've heard songs from it that were released earlier in EPs. "lord of light" is pretty dope

kamerad, Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Mugstar and White Hills run that album.

People who are into White Hills, Moon Duo etc should check out GNOD.

Carl Jung Jeezy (Doran), Saturday, 13 November 2010 14:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Saw Kinski do "Masters of the Universe" with Kawabata on guitar two years back at Terrastock 7. Mind-melting doesn't begin to cover it.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 13 November 2010 15:21 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah that was unbelievable. and kawabata was playing this bizarre pipe-looking guitar-thing that shredded people's hearing

kamerad, Saturday, 13 November 2010 15:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah that's the CD comp of the 3 7"s, plus bonuses from Moon Duo, Magoo & one of the Mugstar tracks IIRC

Wandering Boy Poet, Monday, 15 November 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah I am sorry but I am just imagining Magoo w/o Timbaland rapping the words so "Space is Deep." PICK A BETTER NAME.

you're not là-bas of me (GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ), Tuesday, 16 November 2010 02:26 (thirteen years ago) link

You know Magoo the band predate Timbaland & Magoo by about 3 years right?

Wandering Boy Poet, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 12:48 (thirteen years ago) link

And Mr. Magoo proceeds them by decades. It's all relative.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 16 November 2010 14:37 (thirteen years ago) link

Hadn't heard Mugstar before, the samples on iTunes sound great! I need to track their stuff down.

otm, also what i always wanted wooden shjips to sound like. Purling Hiss is my guitar discovery of '10.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Thursday, 16 December 2010 01:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Are F/i modern enough to list here? Surely, they need to be mentioned in this thread.

Lick me where I pee (van smack), Thursday, 16 December 2010 02:28 (thirteen years ago) link

That tribute is pretty good. I don't have all 15 of those tracks, though.
Can't remember what blog I got it from. I'd really like to hear Fly Ashtray doing Spirit of the Age!
I think I've only got like 8 or 10 of those tracks.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 16 December 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

This tribute is also pretty good:

I def. had some passing thoughts about this thread some time in the last week, and thinking f/I was the answer...maybe Monster Magnet's Tab also, just bcz it reminds me so much of f/I...

Purling Hiss played here in Brooklyn last night. Very cool live. They didn't headline so it was only about ~40 minutes, but I was impressed. Nothing revolutionary here, but if you dig this kind of music they are extremely skilled exponents of it.

Badmotorfinger Debate Club (MFB), Saturday, 18 December 2010 20:33 (thirteen years ago) link

Australia's Blank Realm is doing some things along those lines now. With a Suicide filter interposed. Album is Deja What? A song to start with might be "Full Moon Door."
