Or hey we could choose a Top Of The Pops 70's album and cover that, have LJ on the front with a sheer body stocking.

I'm thrilled my poll inspired this amazing effort!! Just listening to this now - unbelievable. I had no idea ILX was so talented!

Has anyone emailed Colin et al?

Ned has mentioned it upthread, I don't think anyone has yet. Would he be interested I wonder.. (Colin not Ned)

they seem to have a sense of humor about reflection and emulation. after all, these are the guys who brought a band that covered their own early material to open for them on a tour.

latebloomer's track just became my 80,000th play on last.fm

mookieproof, Friday, 14 May 2010 01:11 (fourteen years ago) link

Goddamn, this version of "Boiling Boy", especially with the female vocals. Slaaaaaaaaays me...

Some of the reinterpretations are damn cool as well, nice to "hear" Ned on "Ambitious" and "Heartbeat" is stretched out wonderfully.

Gerald McBoing-Boing, Friday, 14 May 2010 22:45 (fourteen years ago) link

I finally got round to listening to the whole thing tonight, good work people! Wish I'd mixed my "kick drum" (actually the first blip from "Geiger Counter" by Kraftwerk) up a bit, but hey.

if we do another one i promise to not forget to send the file before i go on holiday so i can have something better quality than thrashing a £10 guitar into a the netbook internal mic with an out of sync freeware multitracker.

Sean Carruthers, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:45 (fourteen years ago) link

aw ty sean! there were so many more things i wanted to do with it but time/equipment/guitar playing abilities didn't allow - next time though.

It was a good way to start the proceedings...

Mark G, Tuesday, 18 May 2010 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Yea Ken, when I heard yours it was an obvious and perfect first track.

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 16:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i loved being part of this but i was sad at how little overall female participation there was (i know trayce wanted to contribute but had to drop out). i hope we can actively recruit more chicks for the next project, cuz i know lots of women on ilx play music.

EGOT Schiele (get bent), Tuesday, 18 May 2010 22:50 (fourteen years ago) link

Meant to say, I DL'd this as soon as it went up and it's great from front to back.

Well, I took the initiative and sent a quick Twitter message to Colin Newman (he's @headgit btw) letting him know about this and asking him nicely to please not sue us, and just got the following back, today:

@globalhermit Hey Sean I downloaded it some nice ideas :) Be very interested where you got the Austrian Radio thingy.

So uh, he's probably listened to everyone's contribution by now! Where DID that Austrian Radio thingy come from btw?

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 May 2010 00:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Hurrah!

Ned Raggett, Friday, 21 May 2010 00:36 (thirteen years ago) link

:-)

EGOT Schiele (get bent), Friday, 21 May 2010 00:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Cool!

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 21 May 2010 02:24 (thirteen years ago) link

:D

Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 02:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Austrian or Austrailian?

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 06:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Austrian - guess he means the bonus live show that was in the FTP directory...?

Sean Carruthers, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:06 (thirteen years ago) link

OK, now I'm interested...

(Not that I wasn't before, you know)..

Mark G, Friday, 21 May 2010 12:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh that, I downloaded it from Dime.

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:51 (thirteen years ago) link

Oh and good work too Sean! :)

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:52 (thirteen years ago) link

*just realising the potential error of leaving bootleg material lying about*

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:53 (thirteen years ago) link

SHUT IT DOWN

(e_3) (Edward III), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:54 (thirteen years ago) link

final placement are more likely to sue than wire but then again justine frischmann would prolly disagree

(e_3) (Edward III), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:55 (thirteen years ago) link

maybe you should amend that Sean to please don't sue us and/or Dime

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:56 (thirteen years ago) link

uh maybe just say "i found it on the internets c/r where"

(e_3) (Edward III), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:57 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah Sean, *you* found it on the internets

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 12:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Can you sue someone for misrepresenting a work, i.e. claiming it's a cover and attributing credit to the original band when it doesn't really bear much relation at all?

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:00 (thirteen years ago) link

like an anti-matter Elastica

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:00 (thirteen years ago) link

Gotta say, I feel a bit weird, breaking up the flow of everyone's excellent covers with my 8-minute nouveau-splurge bedroom-art-attack. Makes me nervous when people are all 'this is great!' about the whole thing.

Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:04 (thirteen years ago) link

Like you intentionally spoiled the song?

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Spoiled?! That's harsh. Gave my own spin on it, yes.

Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Right, this I gotta hear

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:33 (thirteen years ago) link

XP: Sorry LJ, I wasn't suggesting you did, just wondering why you might be nervous about CN checking it out. Unless I'm reading you wrong.

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

You are mental tho' :)

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Nooo, I'm not nervous about CN checking it out, just nervous at the blanket praise given to the comp. As if I've somehow thrown a big stinking weed among the roses.

Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm sure it's the scented rose in the bumgut of Satan

Wenlock & Mandelson (Tom D.), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:40 (thirteen years ago) link

I can only assume that MaresNest sequenced mine after the prettiest, most radio-friendly song on the whole comp out of some sense of gleeful anarchism

Dan, Dan, DARRAGH (acoleuthic), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:43 (thirteen years ago) link

I pussied out a bit by not thinking too hard about the sequencing, I knew Ken's was first, Meower last, the multiples had to be far apart and yours and mine (being long assed) needed to be apart too, nowt beyond that.

double shyamalan (MaresNest), Friday, 21 May 2010 13:50 (thirteen years ago) link

(that said, 'prettiest' even as meant in that sense is challenged by Sean, n/a, Elvis T and MaresNest...there's a lot of pretty, also a lot of kickass)

Hey - the sequencing's pretty good IMO! I'm not fussed at all; it doesn't seem too worked-out but it works, which is optimal. It works especially well as a double-album; each disc has a nice flow to it. ESOJ/S' one is quite long as well, btw ;-)
