I'm very fond of that movie, and I'm not sure fashioning it into a more bitter and caustic satire would have improved it, and yes, that was one instance in which O'Donoghue seemed a vainglorious crank who was probably very difficult and unpleasant to spend time with, on occasion.

It's been at least a decade since I read it. I tried to reread it a few years ago and didn't enjoy it nearly so much and stopped, so apologies if my recall is too vague for you.

there's no doubt the guy was a 'purist' about his own work, but you can't be surprised that he wasn't especially interested in cineplex-level mass appeal. He was delighted at reports of audience 'riots' at Mondo Video.
