Because their songs are catchy and they're all, like, ridiculous virtuosos on their respective instruments. Especially their drummer, Carter Beauford. That guy belongs in some kind of drummer's hall-of-fame. Ever heard the live version of "Lie in Our Graves"? Jeez, how the FUCK can ANYBODY play that fast?

This thread is funny.

Dave could vindicate his existence if he were to release the following as a limited edition single:

"It's Not Easy Being Green" b/w "The Rainbow connection"

Lambchop has dibs on "It's Not Easy Being Green"

Dave could vindicate his existence if he were to write a decent song.

with Apologies to Jim Henson and Sam Pottle
(sing this to the tune of "Muppet Show Theme")

It's time to play the music
It's time to light the joints
t's time to meet Dave Matthews on the Dave Matthews Show tonight.

It's time to put up with him
It's time to look up her dress
It's time to raise the curtain on the Dave Matthews Show tonight.

(Alex in NYC and Nick Southall as Waldorf and Statler)
Why do we always come here
        I guess we'll never know
It's like a kind of torture
To have to watch the shmoe

And now let's get things started
Why don't you get things started
It's time to get things started
On the most diabolical irritational coprophagial Daveatastical
This is what we call the Dave Matthews Show!

(Sax player blows one off-key note and then self-destructs)

Aja == most brilliant ILM member.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Saturday, 7 February 2004 06:33 (twenty years ago) link

Thank you!

Aja (aja), Saturday, 7 February 2004 06:40 (twenty years ago) link

Wow. All I can say is that I spent my entire evening reading this whole thread. I normally post more to ILE than ILM, but the beauty of this thread has made me begin to reconsider that approach.

Allison, I thought the first album was decent. I seem to recall liking at least 4 of the songs, particularly "So Much to Say." I did listen to the next two albums. More than once even, and nothing particularly caught my interest. I mean nothing. In fact I found it odd that the stuff was so devoid of anything that might make me notice. I mean, not even one little spot where I went, "oh, that's kinda cool." I was aware of being bummed that the stuff I liked on the first record didn't even appear briefly on the others.

I hope that makes you feel a little less alone on this thread.

For the record, I like Killing Joke, though not as much as Alex. And my favorite band is They Might Be Giants, and I'm not afraid to admit it even though I know there are folks around here who may give me shit for it.

martin m. (mushrush), Saturday, 7 February 2004 11:30 (twenty years ago) link

I don't even know what the first album is. I guess you're talking about UTTAD, which is still one of my favorites but not the best. I'm surprisd that more ILMers don't stick up for BTCS, the only reasons for this that I can think of is that they haven't heard it(it is one of the lesser known albums) or just don't care. I've already admitted that anything released after crash is corporate shit. In fact, the only reason I stick it out here is because I know the older stuff, their only music worth listening to, is sadly being either overlooked or brushed aside. You're missing out.

Allison (Allison), Saturday, 7 February 2004 14:33 (twenty years ago) link

could we possibly devolve this thread any further?
i mean, if we could totally derail it into kittens and cookies for another 100+ posts, i'd be totally happy.

in fact, let's just go with kittens.
maybe kittens with anti-DMB propaganda...
hmmm, nah!
kittens. just kittens.

oooooh, OR ferrets playing.
a room full of ferrets playing!!!
sweet mother of gawd, what fun!!!!!!!!

I've been hearing about this internet discussion for months now. One of my fans mentioned it to me after a gig in Winnepeg, I think. She was pretty upset about it, but I didn't care. I usually don't bother with stuff like this. But then I kept hearing about it, so i decided to check it out. It's actually very funny. And although I'm a little offended by some of the things people wrote, not everyone has the same taste - I realize that. But some of that shit is just hilarious. Some of my fans need to lighten up, yeah .. but that's people in general, isn't it?

I gotta go - (must keep sucking!) ...Assholes!

Wow is that weird. I was just going to comment how sad it is that while something along the lines of this

The Warlocks

is so short, this one here might be the longest ILisforloveM thread . . . And there's Dave! Dave, if that is or isn't you, bravo.

Two thousand Posts? Really?

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:40 (twenty years ago) link

Well, not far off. Anyway, I have never heared any Dave Mattheys Band, knowingly. Obv I am UK based. So what would their big hit be? in the same way as "ionlyyywannaaabewidyouggghhhhh" was recognisable for that band that Noel Gallagher thought were a damn sight worse than Blur... (forget now)

mark grout (mark grout), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:43 (twenty years ago) link

It must die, it must die. It's like a bloody rugby ball as it is. Once again this beast has ruined my evening.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago) link

I actually gave the Dave Matthews Band a halfway non-negative review once. They're definitely an interesting band, even though I don't like them much. And Dave seems like a smart fella. Anyway, here it is:

chuck, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 20:43 (twenty years ago) link

They're definitely an interesting band,

Err......their music isn't.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 21:54 (twenty years ago) link

It IS, Alex! They've got a really original sound! Which isn't to say they're GOOD. But they're way less generic sounding than, say, Nirvana ever were (which again, isn't to say I like them more; I don't, but mainly because I can't get past the guy's voice...)

chuck, Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:07 (twenty years ago) link

But they're way less generic sounding than, say, Nirvana ever were

Very true, actually. Chuck wins a beer!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Wednesday, 31 March 2004 22:09 (twenty years ago) link

you morons do not know about good music, and those of you who slander dmb and have not even attended a show are completely ignorant and idiotic. so please before you degrade them at least give them a chance, they make wonderful music and are indeed very inventive.

on another note i do believe people would hate dave matthews even more if he chose to collaborate with the likes of brittany spears. she has no talent execpt a few dance moves and body that is slowly but surely losing its wow factor.

darron jones, Thursday, 1 April 2004 02:23 (twenty years ago) link

Jesus Christ, if you dont like the band so what. I bet I dont like most
of the SHIT you listen too. I also bet half of you fuckers live in your

GUYS!

Chastised by Cartman. BINGO!

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 1 April 2004 04:01 (twenty years ago) link

Why would you waste your time with a message board putting DMB down? Thats the thing I find stupid. I dont know, maybe other people will agree with me. If you dont like Dave Matthews Band, then good, nobody really gives a shit. Honestly, they dont. So dont waste your time with a pointless message board to just mock them for doing what millions of people love, including myself. Seriously now, theres no need to get all worked up over this. I think you are just taking it all too far. If you dont like the way he looks, dances, sings, plays, then keep it to yourself. Dont ruin it for others that really appreciate what they do. Your just being rediculous if you do.
Brett
