That's a great picture Michael.

I'm fairly close to the Kip Marina on the Clyde so we see lots of yachts. It's a great sight on a sunny day (not that we get many).

your brain actually shrinks when pregnant

must remember to deploy this one if ever arguing with pregnant wife in future. "you can't be trusted dear, your brain has shrunk!"

Ronan, Saturday, 22 September 2007 11:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I read somewhere* that your brain actually shrinks when you're pregnant

:-) Doesn't surprise me. The books all tell you that in the last weeks your brain activity dwindles and you become extremly forgetful. Can it really implode? I think mine did. Thank god I could change the order of 24X16 toilet rolls. I would need an army of diarhea suffering fools to get me through so many. :-) But, yes, brain is really not working properly. :-(

Sam, I'm rooting for you. Kick your boss' incompetetent ass in the upcoming months!

I love living near water, too, although I am so put to shame by all the people I know who boat, fish, swim, scuba dive, go clamming, fossil hunting, etc. I just look at it.

Maria :D, Saturday, 22 September 2007 12:13 (sixteen years ago) link

I am slightly onimoed this morning, and am conquering this by going to the pub in a couple of hours as it is Neil's birthday and also some friends of ours are moving to Wales next week so we're having a big day out.

ailsa, Saturday, 22 September 2007 12:19 (sixteen years ago) link

Maria, there's still time! I went clamming for the first time last year! It's fun! But you get too many clams, and lots of giant gaggers. It's impossible to throw any back or stop. Your inner famine-year-Wampanoag takes over.

I am testing the waters to see if I am fit enough to play with my friends again.

aldo, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:06 (sixteen years ago) link

Hi dere. Play nice :)

I am wasting a holiday Monday by not being onimoed.

Watched "Stuart: A Life Backwards" last night. It was very good but I can't help wondering why we watch things that are so upsetting. Next thing I'll be reading all those horrible "I was fucked right over as a child" weepy things that all have the same cover.

onimo, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:19 (sixteen years ago) link

I wanted to watch that, but spent the evening in the pub instead trying to explain VALIS to someone who hadn't read it.

At the weekend we went to the Tank Museum, which was a lot of fun. The WWI exhibits are particularly good.

aldo, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:25 (sixteen years ago) link

trying to explain VALIS to someone who hadn't read it.

lol almost as hard as explaining it to someone who has read it :P

onimo, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:26 (sixteen years ago) link

You never imagine yourself saying "at which point his friend tells him everybody knows that Fats and Dick are the same person, DIck says 'Oh yes!' and Fats disappears."

aldo, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:28 (sixteen years ago) link

I wanted to watch Stuart: A Life Backwards, but we were out for dinner and I totally lost track of time and didn't get back home until about half an hour into it, so figured too late to start watching. I'm sure it'll be repeated on BBC4 at some point (not being on Virgin any more, we don't have the fancy watch-again-if-you-forgot-about-it option, boo)

ailsa, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:40 (sixteen years ago) link

Chances of something being repeated on BBC4 = HUEG.

aldo, Monday, 24 September 2007 10:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Good Monday folks. Weekend lovely and lazy due partly to much imbibing. A treacle tart is almost horribly sweet. Like nasty candy. It was interesting though I can't call it a hit. Friday I also loaded the fridge with random British beers I got at the fancy grocery store. Nobody wanted the Old Speckled Hen. It smelled like pee.

Ms Misery, Monday, 24 September 2007 12:40 (sixteen years ago) link

I can't remember what thread it was on, but I saw this shirt and thought of Ronan:

I'm quite partial to Old Speckled Hen.

onimo, Monday, 24 September 2007 14:44 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't mind it either, I mean it wouldn't be my bitter of choice but it's acceptable enough. Not sure about the new weaker version though, it's not that nice.

aldo, Monday, 24 September 2007 14:52 (sixteen years ago) link

Can everybody just keep it down, this morning? My head is throbbing.

Michael White, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:23 (sixteen years ago) link

Maybe the Hen was a bit skunky after it's overseas voyage. I still have a Guinness in the fridge. I think I'll save that for breakfast.

What were you drinking MW?

Ms Misery, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:36 (sixteen years ago) link

What wasn't I drinking, Ms Mis? Cider, g&ts, wine...

My gf was out of town and I appear to have had an alcoholiday.

I think I'll save that for breakfast.

;)

Michael White, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:39 (sixteen years ago) link

Guinness, part of a nutritious breakfast!

Sampled a friend's home brew and also the Schneider Weisse double bock wheat beer last night, but not enough to be onimoed. Something has caught hold of my throat, though, and made me feel all snuffly-scratchy today.

The parrot groomer was over on Saturday and has some saline solution for their sinuses. The poor buggers have allergies like me, except they don't make regular use of tissues and drugs. The little guy was none too keen, but the bigger one snorted up the saline like a pro. They also got their beaks buffed and feet massaged, and I wondered why I don't get this done for myself as well. I could use a good beak buffing!

patita, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Owning parrots sounds very strange. . .

Ms Misery, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:59 (sixteen years ago) link

My freind's parrot unfortunately learned to imitate the sounds she makes while in the throes of sexual bliss. Apart from being extremely embarrassing, it's also really hilarious 'cause you never know when the bird's going to suddenly start exclaiming, "Yes. Yes. YES!"

Michael White, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:01 (sixteen years ago) link

Owning parrots is strange. They will pick up whatever they want, especially if it's something they find interesting/think will get a response. Michael White, that's one of the best I've heard!

Messing with other pets and mimicking the telephone are pretty common. I get the sound of a zipper every time I put my shoes on or open/close my bag. The bigger one makes farting and belching noises. The little guy does the sound of dripping water. The only way to dissuade them of something they picked up is not to react to it at all, or to cue them to do a trick or something else as a distraction.

patita, Monday, 24 September 2007 19:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Can I ask a huge favour? Can any Americans watching Heroes please not post spoilers on this thread? Cheers :-)

ailsa, Monday, 24 September 2007 21:29 (sixteen years ago) link

they find interesting/think will get a response.

It certainly gets a response. She had a date over once and couldn't get the bird to shut up.

Apparently he also does fire truck sirens.

Michael White, Monday, 24 September 2007 22:28 (sixteen years ago) link

That wasn't a spoiler just an OMG IT'S BACK kind of thing. I haven't even watched it yet.

onimo, Monday, 24 September 2007 22:31 (sixteen years ago) link

I don't think I can be arsed with Heroes this series. I thought it became very disappointing as it went along.

(Suddenly realises she is in the same position as the Americans and scans post for spoilers)

No, that seems safe enough.

Hey, I'm back from Amsterdam! It was great. I managed to drink two beers a day, smoke nothing, and still be knackered. I R LITEWAIT.

The best bit was when me and Rock Hardy and the Vicar and Rener went to Lelystad to visit the Batavia. It is, in some ways, the ideal day out for all the family, because you can go and visit the Batavia and climb all over a 17th century sailing ship, and/or visit the outlet mall next door.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 07:20 (sixteen years ago) link

I'm guessing me and Onimo and Aldo will all be watching at around the same time, i.e. this evening after "work" (not that I have any work, but my husband does and I can't watch without him or he will know and he will kill me), and they hopefully know me well enough to know not to spoil.

ANYONE WATCHING HEROES TAKE DISCUSSION TO THE HEROES THREAD UNLESS IT IS NON-SPOILERIFFIC THANK YOU.

oh, and accentmonkey :-)

Hello, glad you had a good time in Amsterdam. When is it you are coming to Glasgow - I'm sure we can redress the lightweight balance for you.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 07:24 (sixteen years ago) link

I am coming over the last weekend in October. I will have to meet people Saturday day or night. I had hoped to stay over Sunday night too, but have to come home on Sunday because my brother is running the Dublin marathon on Monday, so I suppose I have to be here for that.

So that's Saturday, October 27th, accentmonkey fans.

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 07:30 (sixteen years ago) link

Excellent - Celtic are at home to Motherwell at 3pm, so that will account for Onimo's and my proximity to Glasgow that afternoon from about 5 o'clock onwards.

ailsa, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 07:38 (sixteen years ago) link

27th October is plenty of notice, I might manage to get a babysitter and take Mrs O out for a well deserved drink.

In other news, I am on my sons' school board (or "School Community Council" or whatever they're calling them these days)! Look at me getting all old and boring and public minded! They asked me to chair it but I shat it tbh. I don't think I made that great an impression at the end of the meeting when we were arranging the next one and I refused dates because they clashed with Champions League matches :)

This is in the 'new' finance tool. Every time I run the process, it produces a different answer. And none of them are the right one.

To make things worse, this is for a table in an executive summary of an internal version of a management plan (not the external version, that's actually quite useful) that will probably never get read.

aldo, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 09:45 (sixteen years ago) link

If it'll never get read surely that makes things better?

onimo, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 09:56 (sixteen years ago) link

Neurotic Business Management Woman does not think so. "What if they check up?!?!!!???!! It needs to be right or I might get in trouble!!1!!!!11"

Anyway, I have managed to convince her, in a Tony Wilson style, to publish the myth.

I love how this makes your actually quite cool and attractive wife sound like some sort of biddy in curlers who sits in a corner of a manky pub and drinks port and lemon (but just the one, mind, in case she'd be looking to get frisky when you get home).

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 12:04 (sixteen years ago) link

So that's Saturday, October 27th, accentmonkey fans.

A day before my birthday. Read it. Learn it. Remember it! ;-)

Check-up at OBGYN revealed 6 kilo weight gain. Nurse was waving her finger a bit (figuratively speaking) but OBGYN said that it had to be water retention. Otherwise doing fine (as can be). Head is down down down so ready for *squirting out*. hahaha And had a call from colleague's husband to say his wife already delivered. Two weeks too soon, but she's doing swell! Both are. Still the news gave me a slight panic attack: OH NOES! IT IS NEARING! :-)

nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 12:34 (sixteen years ago) link

I have your birthday written down in my moleskine (breathes sigh of relief that it's still a bit away). It seems like you just announced you were pregnant again!

The rest of you sound so together with your trips and school boards and socializing and what not. My life is so drab and consumed with work lately. Everything's going to hell in a handbasket and I'm going to be a basketcase. I also have wicked blisters on my feet due to wearing pretty shoes yesterday. Is teh suck.
