also this seems not to be the thread where "massive attack" was discussed, but i definitely love that song. and the video.

It's actually on the Fabolous - "For the Money" remix. That "Lemonade" verse is boring and fuck off with the "minks," too.

Shannon Whirry and the Bad Brains, Saturday, 24 April 2010 15:53 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, and the complete couplet is “I told Fab 'Get that Michael Knight KITT Coupe' / before I put this pussy on your chipped tooth."

i'm not sure what i think about massive attack yet; i still want to hear her sound good and that might be the track that I can grudgingly commit to? not sure yet.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:04 (fourteen years ago) link

4got that song existed -- is it getting any radio play outside of hot 97

yo gotti or notti (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link

#65 on the R&B chart, which is to say not really

surmudgeon (some dude), Saturday, 24 April 2010 16:39 (fourteen years ago) link

Mmmassive Attack gets discussed on I'm Nicki Minaj, Nicki Lewinsky, Nicki the Ninja, Nicki the Boss, Nicki the Harajuku Barbie ... prob should lock one or the other of these threads since they're both effectively open-ended Minaj-watch.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 24 April 2010 17:22 (fourteen years ago) link

locking seems excessive, but i'm fine w/ the other one being the default thread in the future. i just revived this one because this is the thread where we talked about the 'sideburns' line.

"my chick bad" is my jam until nicki comes in, I mean not that luda's verses are amazing but the "nightmare on elm street and guess who's playing freddy!" thing is like a whole nother level of get this shit off my radio now

history tayne (crüt), Friday, 14 May 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

the thing about that line is that it would work for me alright if she didn't also say "friday the 13th and guess who's playing jason," putting both those references in the first in the exact same construction feels so amateurish and lazy.

i have a grudging respect for the uncompromising schtick overload of "Massive Attack" but "Your Love" is just such a lame-ass retreat in the other direction.

itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:23 (thirteen years ago) link

also imo Nicki is really the lest of "My Chick Bad"'s problems, shitty beat, shitty hook, worst Luda verses ever

itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

emilys: "If Luda's chick does stuff that he can't put in words, why did he think a rap would be the best way to express his feelings?"

Doctor Casino, Friday, 14 May 2010 18:38 (thirteen years ago) link

the best thing about "my chick bad" is nicki in the video

i really unapologetically love "massive attack" - i love how it takes a few listens to arrange itself in your head but once it does you pretty much grow to love every aspect of it

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:39 (thirteen years ago) link

what do you think of the tinny timid generic "Your Love" though

itt tech (some dude), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:44 (thirteen years ago) link

is that the terrible autotune one? unless it's been changed significantly (completely) since the version i heard last year, i dislike it v much

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Friday, 14 May 2010 18:45 (thirteen years ago) link

"Massive Attack" is a lot stickier than I would have expected the first time I heard it. I have "Mmmassive attack! Mmmmassive attack!" and "Tom toms over here bigger than a monster/ Blak! Blak! Blaka!" stuck in my head all the time, which doesn't quite translate into me wanting to listen to it.

i am giving you the viking of compliments (The Reverend), Friday, 14 May 2010 20:52 (thirteen years ago) link

there's nothing good about "my chick bad" -- worst single of the year so far

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Friday, 14 May 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

it almost erases any goodwill luda had built up in the last year and a half or so doing remixes and stuff

contl;drizer (J0rdan S.), Friday, 14 May 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

massive attack = lol u have sean garrett on ur hook, c u l8r

aiyeeeeeeee i never heard my chick bad before fucking a this is horrible, luda what are you doing???????

you better check that sausage before you put it in the rofl (M@tt He1ges0n), Friday, 14 May 2010 22:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I have the same relationship with "Massive Attack" that Rev does, I think. The problem is that so little of the stuff between those headsticky points is particularly memorable.

"My Chick Bad," yeah... it's not the worst thing I've ever heard, but it's sorta uninspired and you'd think Ludacris of all people could do so much more with that premise! The references are really blah - she always brings a racket like Venus and Serena? Okay, yeah, I get the joke but is that as bad as your chick gets, Luda? Compare to "What's Your Fantasy?" and there's been a real loss of energy.

I maintain that it should have been a battle song with another male rapper, with them arguing over whose chick was badder... and then we get to Nicki's verse and we realize that she's BOTH their chicks! Or something.

This Nicki Minaj video is making me hate hip-hop.

#

It's not Nicki Minaj, herself. It's not even, really, the video, which strikes me as cheap, but not inappropriately so. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

#

I think it's me; i.e., me + these images + this music. I think I'm overwhelmed by the idea that this is insufficent. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

#

I was just overwhelmed by the sense that we have for the most part, failed the possibilities of the form, and what it calls for. Like... about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

#

...it just struck me as kind of cowardly. Lacking audacity and courage. Kind of meaningless. None of the fire that, say, Sha-Rock brought. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

#

Here's what watching the Nicki Minaj video made me realize: For hip-hop to *become* something else, it will have to *do* something else. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

#

When I say that for hiphop to *become* something else, it will have to *do* something else, I'm not trying to be mysterious. I'm saying... about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

Otherwise, it will merely continue to slide into whatever package is open and the bottom of its descent and, then, take that shape. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

...that culture is powerful. It changes people's thinking, it makes people wealthy, it becomes what we seek when our spirits are tired. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

#

It is not enough to merely consume it. We must make it, speak for it, or against it. Tell our children what is good, and why. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

Like, the Constitution is too important to leave to lawyers? Hip-hop is too important to leave to the people who make hip-hop. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

# We should debate hip-hop the way they debate the Constitution. Or municipal zoning, in city council meetings. With passion and intent. about 1 hour ago via TweetDeck

it's actually a pretty great video for a pretty bad song. though i'm beginning to hear how "your love" could be made into something good (get rid of the ke$hatune for starters). i like her kimono-clad ninja style, cf this early video -

yeah not 100 percent sure that is real, but sometimes the way she says stuff esp. (beside the physical resemblance) really sounds like an earlier, less exaggerated version of how she talks now

zvookster, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 22:12 (thirteen years ago) link

you know, i think it's really cool that nicki is the first openly queer rap star and even if i don't always like her shit, i am basically rooting for her because of this. i mean, of course the first openly queer rap star is a bisexual woman, but still, REALLY COOL.

ksh is my clone (The Reverend), Saturday, 24 July 2010 09:19 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah it is kinda cool -- like even before when there were rumors or speculation about other female rappers being gay or bi, it tended to be treated as a stigma or a dirty little secret.

some dude, Saturday, 24 July 2010 13:58 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah but is it even really a victory? bisexual females are basically just some male fantasy ish in hip hop now, it's so prevalent...i dunno. it'd be a lot cooler if she still looked like how she looked in that video instead of all barbie post plastic surgery IMO

my dream is to own a fly casino (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Saturday, 24 July 2010 14:40 (thirteen years ago) link

really doesn't endear her to me any more or any less because i don't really think it's a very visible part of her personality

her big single is some insipid lullaby about a dude

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 24 July 2010 15:41 (thirteen years ago) link

the bit about cassie on "lil freak" was dope tho cuz of its specificity

i'd be much happier if rich fourfour was right and drake turned out to be a homo

ASBO slice (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 24 July 2010 15:42 (thirteen years ago) link

the entirety of her "lil freak" verse is spitting game to a female and she talks about signing boobs more than any popular artist since '80s hair metal. but yeah i wouldn't be one bit surprised if it's just a public image thing as part of her sex appeal, i'm just saying that when people talked about Remy Ma or Latifah of MC Lyte being possibly gay it tended to be in a "EW SHE A DYKE" way.

some dude, Saturday, 24 July 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i think minaj acknowledging and repping for her gay fanbase is more cause for applause than her bisexuality, which i don't even know if she's talked about in detail beyond the usual female celebrity "i find women attractive too" stuff - like i have no idea if she's being a lipstick lesbian (no problem w/that if she is) or if she actually identifies as bisexual

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Saturday, 24 July 2010 16:07 (thirteen years ago) link

"bottoms up" verse might be her masterpiece

It's definitely her "wackiest" verse tho.
