so last week, the co-founder of the site and the vp of marketing walked away from yelp (2 of the 3 most visible yelp execs), both citing a desire for "some time off". Could this have anything to do with the $500M offer from google earlier this year that was turned down and promptly created mucho drama in the office?

RIP yelp.

Look bitches.. I understand it gets late, you need to close the indoor area. It costs money to pay people $6 an hour to press buttons on the cash register. But you're also located about .01 miles away from a major convention hotel. If you're going to keep the drive-thru open, at least take orders from people who 1) don't have a car or 2) have been drinking a-la convention style and would prefer not to get a DUI/DWI just to get some chicken nuggets. I walk up to your stupid drive-thru at 10:30PM, and place my order, then you won't give it to me because I'm not in a car. What's up with that? You already made the freakin' food. Screw you. I ordered Domino's instead.

The tale of how a dollar can cost an establishment hundreds of dollars in future business.

I had been hyped to come here since I read about it on a food blog. But I was really disappointed by the service last night, and in particular of the manager.

The wine list is not bad and the beer list is pretty good. It was the night of my master's graduation, I went with my fiance, my sister and her husband and my classmate. We were drinking beer and wine, sitting at the communal table.

My fiance has recently really gotten hooked on http://foursquare.com and instantly checked in when he got here. He saw that Waterloo & City offered http://foursquare.com users one dollar off of a beer for their first check-in to it. He told the server about the offer, and she was puzzled. She had no idea what http://foursquare.com was and didn't know about the offer. That's not offensive, http://foursquare.com is part of the next wave of social media and will be a tool for discerning diners, just as Yelp was and is. Not everyone knows about it yet. So the server called the manager over.

I don't know the manager's name, but she came over, (she had short red hair). She could barely contain her disdain for this offer and tried to convince us that it was tied to a World Cup special for tomorrow. IT WAS NEVER ABOUT THE DOLLAR--it was about an excited social media user, my fiance, getting into http://foursquare.com and wanting to interact with what he thought would be a savvy, super-connected business. I mean, it's a freaking dollar, but when he was made to feel like a jerk or a nerd for trying to use the foursquare discount, I was offended.

That's not customer service. She derisively told my fiance she would try and make a badge for him and kept repeating this to mock him. I'm glad she had a laugh at his expense, but why go out of your way to alienate a new set of customers over one dollar? Why does an establishment offer discounts across social media platforms if the managers mock the customers who try to use them?

We had two more rounds, the waitstaff was very attentive, but when we got the bill, the controversial dollar had not been taken off the check.

You can be sure that we will tell all our friends, especially our Culver City friends and our http://foursquare.com-using friends, to stay away from a business that mocked my fiance. For no good reason at all. We will go out of our way to make sure that everyone we know avoids this place.

From the tone of her "review", I'm imagining it went something like this:

Foursquare Dork: "Honey, really, not a big deal. Its a dollar, let it go."

Yelp Scumbag: "Oh no, I will not stand for this! Bring me your manager immediately! This is an OUTRAGE!"

Foursquare Dork: *slinks down in booth*

I don't particularly want to defend yelp but I do sorta see the logic behind this - it would be pretty easy for someone game the reviews otherwise.

Here on Yelp, three stars equates to "A-OK" and two stars equates to "Meh. I've experienced better." I opted to give a three-star rating for reasons I'm about to describe, though I have most certainly experienced better sushi restaurants.

I'm admittedly somewhat of a sushi snob. I speak a little Japanese and know only the Japanese names of certain dishes, like Hiyayako [HE-YAH-YAH-KOH], which is some sort of tofu dish, though I'm not able to explain that dish in English any better than you just read.

Because of this little problem of mine, I try to eat in only authentic Japanese restaurants owned and operated by authentic Japanese people.

I haven't found such a place, yet, here in Baltimore. Aloha Sushi is owned and operated by Korean people.

The quality of the sushi was good and the fish was very fresh. The prices were also quite reasonable, except for the cold sake, which comes in very small bottles and is exorbitantly priced.

The wait staff was very attentive and friendly. The restroom was clean, but was decorated with a plastic flower. Plastic flowers in public restrooms is just plain wrong.

I would eat here again, but continue my quest for a bona fide, authentic Japanese restaurant here in the Baltimore metropolitan area...

Was this review …?
