i'm not crazy about the pre-Shepherd records so i was almost hoping that whenever they tour around here the set would be just the hits straight up, like similar to the set i saw them do at Lollapalooza a few months before breaking up, but yeah pretty cool that they went through the whole catalog and ignored their biggest hit. they'll probably be at least a little more crowd-pleasing on the festival circuit, though, i imagine.

aww....Cornell's voice sounds shot on "Spoonman" - as I feared, but was hopeful after the first youtube posting.

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Monday, 19 April 2010 01:05 (fourteen years ago) link

damn they sound great

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 April 2010 01:06 (fourteen years ago) link

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 April 2010 01:07 (fourteen years ago) link

xpost I was just posting that he sounds a million times better on Nothing to Say.

all things considered I think I'd pay to see em. I never got to the first time around

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Monday, 19 April 2010 01:07 (fourteen years ago) link

now if only they'd play Limo Wreck

Phoenix in Flight (Cattle Grind), Monday, 19 April 2010 01:08 (fourteen years ago) link

What? Was the limp-pop direction of his first (& only) solo joint failing him so much that he's reverting back to his Badmotorfinger / Louder than Love uber-aggression stance?

Good lord, this sentence.

A passerby wearing tie-dye said to one person desperate for a ticket, "Good luck in life."

I <3 Soundgarden but you have to give it up for this zing

i think its actually scientifically impossible to be zinged by someone wearing tie-dye tho

Good god it's nice to hear Thayil again. I don't even care if Chris can't maintain the screaming anymore. Definitely psyched to see them.

There's a supposedly decent rec gone up on D1M£AD0Z£N if anyone's interested.

You Weaked It! (MaresNest), Monday, 19 April 2010 17:21 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah really if i go to a show it'll be to hear the band ROKK THE FUKK OUT, if the vox sound good it'll be a bonus

is there any word on how extensively they'll be touring and whether they'll be doing headlining gigs all over or mostly festivals?

a hoy hoy young mess (some dude), Monday, 19 April 2010 17:35 (fourteen years ago) link

The "limp-pop" thing was actually Cornell's second solo album. People keep forgetting the actually not terrible Euphoria Morning. I'd rather have had more in that direction than Audioslave tbh.

call all destroyer, Monday, 19 April 2010 18:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah I would love to see them, but not paying huge $$$$ to deal with the Lolla crowd in 100 degree August heat.

There are few things worse in this world than hearing Chris Cornell's pinched, straining scream further ruin a song that was already pretty shitty to begin with.

soulless orange bimbo (res), Monday, 19 April 2010 21:00 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't want to haul my ass to Chicago, definitely hoping for a few more shows.
Cornell sounds a hell of a lot better than I thought he would in those youtube clips.
and that set list...short of Little Joe, that's almost my perfect setlist. NO BLACK HOLE SUN!!! If I never heard that song again it would be too soon.

VegemiteGrrrl, Monday, 19 April 2010 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Ha! My first reaction to the setlist was "Aw, no litte joe!"

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Monday, 19 April 2010 23:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Keep in mind since this was a secret show, the setlist might be more 'obscure' than what they play at 'Palooza. could also be that Cornell hates Black Hole Sun too....

Recording seems to be here, haven't downloaded it yet so I don't know what the quality's like.

not sure i ever listened to it all the way through - but for the artwork alone it was worthy of some love.

Bogart Puff 'n Stuff (Cattle Grind), Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:06 (fourteen years ago) link

oh yay some asshole in the audience is singing along so I can't hear Chris much on Rusty Cage...

Bogart Puff 'n Stuff (Cattle Grind), Saturday, 24 April 2010 20:17 (fourteen years ago) link

so my impressions are I won't listen to this much but it's a neat lil souveneir, the band sounds great, like they haven't missed a step. Chris goes flat a bit vocally, but he sounds better than I expected. his shriek is more shrill than melodic nowadays, but he still hits some good ones. he has 'old man' sounding moments like he did on his "Carry On" album but even Fell On Black days he modifies the way he sings it to fit his current voice.

totally wanna see em now.

ok he sounsd awful on Slaves and Bulldozers :(

haha now i'm afraid to listen :S

borntohula, Sunday, 25 April 2010 15:40 (fourteen years ago) link

it's interesting that they so heavily favored songs from the Badmotorfinger/Louder Than Love period where Cornell was probably screaming a bit a more than on the last 2 albums, maybe he felt like he had something to prove by singing those songs again.

surmudgeon (some dude), Sunday, 25 April 2010 15:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yea for sure. he did hit some real nice screams that show some of it is still there, but I can imagine he only had that stamina early in the show and had to result in turning the awesome "NOW I KNOW WHY YOU'VE BEEN TAKEN" shriek into a....polite tinny falsetto. It kind of....deflates the track :/. plus it's also hard when you're playing guitar at the same time.

The aesthetic slide from shitkicking potheads covering Cheech&Chong/Spinal Tap into...whatever this[^]is...is why I bailed after Badmotorfinger. Somewhere along the way their tongues got too far into their cheeks and numbed up their critical faculties.

Anyway Kim Thayil kicks ass.

Hadrian VIII, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 17:01 (thirteen years ago) link

But the song is from the Badmotorfinger sessions...which explains why it's so badass. A+ for the Hawkwind video as well.

WARS OF ARMAGEDDON (Karaoke Version) (Sparkle Motion), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 17:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Ah, I thought it was new. And my impression was that it would have fit nicely as a filler track on Badmotorfinger or LTL. My other thought was, "Man I miss Thayil".

bendy, Wednesday, 22 September 2010 17:18 (thirteen years ago) link

I know its a new Cornell vocal track, but is it a new recording of a song they wrote back then? Or is this a "cleaning up" of an older recording?

he's always been a bit of an anti-climb Max (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 22 September 2010 17:22 (thirteen years ago) link

from wikipedia:

The song was recorded during sessions for Badmotorfinger and, according to Chris Cornell in an interview with USA Today, "Black Rain" captures "that super heavy version (of the band) we were finally realizing to its fullest potential about 1991." On September 17, 2010, a Music Video was released, directed by Brendon Small of Metalocalypse.

i thought the singing sounded totally like Badmoterfinger era Cornell!
