The Wire had a significant gap between seasons 3 and 4, but that was partly because they weren't sure if they were going to renew it.

at this point, I am wondering if it might not be better if some talented cable TV writers finished this thing for him. I am losing faith that he has any idea where he is going with these books.

I hope this starts a trend of classy TV fantasy adaptations. Someone should do Perdido Street Station (though would be fucking expensive). Do these books have monsters and magic and shit, or is it just guys fighting with swords?

perdido street station feels basically like a miniseries already! which is unfortunate in that the other bas-lag stuff wouldn't really work as further series of.

Wasn't the guy in the first scene of the trailer also in the Lord of the Ring movies? I guess all "serious" fantasy movies/series now have to look kinda murky with muted colours, since LotR did that. Will anyone make a colourful fantasy movie anymore?
― Tuomas, Tuesday, 30 November 2010 10:41 (2 years ago) Permalink
yeah thats sean bean... ive been reading the first book and im not a fantasy guy at all but its p. good... a lot of the early parts of the story take place in a wintery shithole, which limits your color choices... plus its kind of 'gritty' fantasy and they wanna convey that style/mood...
lotr movies were pretty colorful imo, like that part where they're in elfburg and the dwarf goes AND U HAVE MY AXE... lots of stuff actually... its just the color palette changes depending on context... i mean what do you want dude, rainbows over mount doom..

For example, based on the trailer the Avatar The Last Airbender movie has the same kind of look even though the source material is actually quite colourful and fun.

have you read the books? if there is one story that needs to look "gritty", it's this one.

― Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 30 November 2010 17:49 (2 years ago) Permalink
God, I hope not. To me the best way to do it would be to break it down and rearrange in a linear timeline. Jump around between characters, like any good television drama with a ton of characters tends to do.

holy crap @ the wall, that is impressive. is the 2nd one supposed to be winterfell? don't remember things well enough to ID the first one, maybe the lannisters' castle? that was by the ocean iirc
i'm real tempted to reread the books now that the 5th one finally has a release date and i don't remember most of the plot details, but that's like...4000 pages of pulp fantasy when i already have a long list of new and probably better things to read, damn. i'll probably do it anyway

The first is my favourite in some ways because of this. There's a neat inexorability to the plot which is missing in the later ones, particularly the last two.

Seven Hells at the book's description of Daario! Still, I think it would have been more... interesting if the TV show had gone with something closer to that than the bland, romance novel guy that they did go with.

FWIW I really don't think his prose is particularly bad. He's never going to win any awards as a stylist of course, but his writing is often pretty evocative, and he has a way of describing the big dramatic scenes in a somewhat understated way which is very effective. Also a good dialogue writer. As Roberto said, there's a ton of far far worse professional SF/fantasy writing out there.
― I wish to incorporate disco into my small business (chap), Tuesday, 21 May 2013 23:27 (Yesterday) Permalink
