I picked up the split 12" with Andrew WK today--found it cheap at a local shop and heard it was out of print, so I figured I'd snatch it up. Not bad stuff at all. Some of it sounds a little tame, and I haven't really sat down and analyzed the lyrics yet...

But it makes me want to pick up more. Probably the "Dread" CD or the "Fuck Pete Larsen" LP since I've seen both of those around and mailorder is a hassle sometimes.

Can anyone tell me what exactly is on the "FPL" LP? I've heard that it's a compilation but what of? Cassette releases? Singles? Comp tracks?

Ian Johnson (orion), Friday, 18 October 2002 20:38 (10 years ago) Permalink

Great great great live show, and I know zilch about their field of clatter...

Pete Scholtes, Friday, 18 October 2002 20:41 (10 years ago) Permalink

the FPL LP is just two sides of droning noise - side B is the asscrusher, starting out with some nice shrieking and clattering.

Has anyone heard the two CDs that American Tapes currently has? Interminable Bleeding and Strangulation Tank. I'm a bit wary of ordering them, only because I know nothing about them. I could end up with two hours of crap.

Ian Johnson (orion), Monday, 11 November 2002 15:40 (10 years ago) Permalink

most of the wolf eyes stuff on amtapes is poorly recorded pots and pans banging and synth bleats. and yelling. i'm not insulting it, btw, i really like most of it. american tapes releases are frequently 'mixed' by john olson (ex-universal indians, currently in wolf eyes), which involves an old noisy tape delay, some razor blade editing and letting the tapes marinate in basement filth until they sound like melted flexi discs played at 16 rpm.

there are some really great releases on am tapes (yellow eyes, the universal indians LPs, dr. gretchen's musical weightlifting program) but they can be an endurance test if you're not 'feeling it.'

and if anyone has "thrist of the worm"...i'm up for a trade.

Has anyone heard Dead Hills yet? I've seen it at the store and pondered picking it up.

Ian Johnson (orion), Sunday, 8 December 2002 16:37 (10 years ago) Permalink

Well Ian, Dead Hills sounds like some of my unreleased demos in the very extreme parts. There's a lot of quiet parts with a thumpy synth drum sound and lots of echoy noise and MITB-ish vocals. Every song has a thumping slow rhythm. The last song (of three), "Dead Tropics" is probably my favorite.

Jonathan Williams (ex machina), Sunday, 22 December 2002 15:54 (10 years ago) Permalink

I enjoyed one of their songs, one of the times I've seen them. Otherwise I don't like them at all. (I seem to have inadvertantly seen them about a half-dozen times.)

Dave Fischer, Sunday, 22 December 2002 16:54 (10 years ago) Permalink

"dead hills" pretty much sounds like "dread" part 2. long extended instrumental opener that, in my memory at least, features crickets chirping. two shorter songs with vocals a la "dread". running time, 23 minutes. worth every penny.

there was also an american tapes 3" CDR called "dead hills" that seems to bear little (if any) relation to the troubleman release.

all the Amtapes stuff is great - my recent favorites are all the Dead Machines cassettes (John with gal pal / Polyamory Records founder Tovah O'Rourke) and the Dead Comet Alive cdr. Best punk label ever? quite possibly...

Wolf Eyes' "Dread" is the perfect soundtrack for a Michigan winter. Whether you're digging a path to your car, driving on ice in a blinding snowstorm, walking against a freezing wind, or wrestling with cabin fever, you'll find that Wolf Eyes fit seamlessly into the moment. Their music paints a picture of a greasy mound of black snow slowly melting on a salt-stained sidewalk.

When the spring begins, and you feel fully awake for the first time in months, and you're walking around in short sleeves reaquainting yourself with leaves and grass and sunlight, then you might want to listen to some different music. Right now, though, "Dread" sounds perfect.

EC, Thursday, 6 March 2003 06:14 (10 years ago) Permalink

picked up dead hills yesterday and it's reet, very throbbing gristle very bleek and industrial, nice RPG allusions a la every fucking US hardcore group out, nice skull art work reminds me of a skate board i used to have

what label is dread on?

schnell schnell, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:04 (10 years ago) Permalink

It's a split release between Bulb, Hanson and American Tapes. Should still be available. It's a motherfucker.

hstencil, Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:23 (10 years ago) Permalink

I played Wolf Eyes (a tape of a track from 'Dread') for two friends who haven't heard much noise before. We had just smoked a lot of pot. One of them was unable to move and commented that he felt like monkeys were beating his skull in. It was pretty funny.

Jon Williams (ex machina), Tuesday, 18 March 2003 14:40 (10 years ago) Permalink

the "dread" cd is 'on' bulb. the "dread" lp is 'on' american tapes+hanson, according to the back of it anyway. more interestingly and less pedantically, the LP is being reissued soon for vinylists.

PEDANT ALERT: The CD I have has all three labels listed on the back.

incidentally, anyone who uses soulseek should look for the live 11.15.01 video and audio by wolf eyes, it's fucking great. as are the two CDRs ("half dogs" aka olson mix and untitled aka dilloway mix) i've seen around.

i stand by the wolf eyes "half dogs" and s/t cdrs - one mixed by dilloway, one by olson. and fucking MUGGER kicks your fucking ass.

i was at that hemlock show, very different from the other 4 shows i've seen. the lights were on, dilloway and olson were laughing almost the whole show. very good, i'll look for it on slsk. the dolphins next to me were eeping in delight!

j0hn dwy3r was next to me talking loudly the entire show about (!!!) himself (!!!) imagine that gee whiz.

That said, Mugger rules, Dread rules, Slicer is pretty good, and they eat my fucking face live. Today, on my record shopping binge, I might pick up the split LP with Crack: We Are Rock if they still have it at Armageddon.

the one where he criticizes someone for not listening to to live and shave in LA 'correctly'? that wasn't funny, it was sad.

kraudive, Thursday, 3 June 2010 17:19 (3 years ago) Permalink

Yeah I really wish bands would keep on making the same records over and over, too, for I am also a predictable, boring, joyless masochist who fears change, and I prefer the music I enjoy to reflect that.

well, it's the most revived thread ever for a reason

anyway, anybody feel the recentish wolf eyes lp on hospital, always wrong. i didn't, but am curious abt others' reactions. way too one-dimensionally shrill and grating for me, with none of the murky, gooey, tarpit throb that used to hold down the shriek & clatter. for some reason, i'm inclined to blame the shift on dominic fernow, as it sounds like a prurient-approved version of the band. honestly tho, i haven't liked much (any?) of the post dillo stuff.

the other is a black gay gentleman from Los Angeles (contenderizer), Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:24 (3 years ago) Permalink

I enjoy the emphasis on Nate's vocals - I like them higher in the mix. It's sort of a different band now, I agree (not a bad thing), but when I saw them a few months ago they were as murky, deranged and fucked up as ever.

If Assholes Could Fly This Place Would Be An Airport, Thursday, 3 June 2010 20:26 (3 years ago) Permalink

yeah, they've remained very satisfying live, though it's been a while since i last saw em. and i love the emphasis on vocals and clearly structured songs, just wish the whole thing were recorded a little differently. total inversion of my reaction to my favorite WE records, which sound amazing and inviting, regardless of how unstructured and supposedly "harsh" the music is.
